To our gas brethren, I'm a bit pissed off that you haven't mentioned the bigger club down the road, the one with the sparkling stadium and 20K crowds. Maybe we're just a echelon too high for you now?
I was pulled up tonight by one of you bastards, drinking in Dandos in gas country slagging me off for showing respect.
I despise your club, with a passion only reserved for people I really do not like. The gas fans on here are sound, it's not their fault that they follow the really crap club in our beautiful city.
I respect what the gas have done in the last few years, hated it but respect it but the majority of gas fans are knuckle dragging f**kwits tbh, full of jealousy and delusion.
Sound lads on here but I can't f**king stand Bristol f**king r***rs! Swinedon can f**k off too but they're the aftebirth that nobody really gives a shit about TBH!
No offence fellas but you would expect nothing less!
OTIB.
To those outside our fair city, this is the crap we have to put up with, c**ts!

Here's another one, please go to 2 minutes, it's a killer!
'Bristol city and Ashton Gate will be our training ground', we're the biggest (no), richest (no) etc etc'? F**king braindead f**kwit! The son's okay but the father is why we f**king hate your club!
Even his son had to wear a seatbelt in their driveway as his dad is a braindead knob FFS!
We're not great but....?
But the thread is about irrational hatred. Hating you inbreeds is completely rational!
I would respond to that video with the grimsbury girl, but she took the video down :err:

My hatred of Oxford United goes way beyond the football club.

I hate Oxford the city, Oxfordshire, inhabitants of Oxfordshire. I hate going into Oxfordshire, even those pissy little villages just over the border like Faringdon. I cannot pass a road sign that bears the name of Oxford without spitting.

I want any telly contestants from Oxford to lose. Cambridge to win the Boat Race.

The feeling is entirely mutual.

I never visit your backwards town, unless we're playing there, don't have anything red, despise your stupid yokel accent and lack of identity, will never buy a Christmas card with a robin on it, and refuse to eat Wiltshire ham.

Oxford is a world famous city of beauty and culture, located in one of the most expensive and desirable counties in the UK, while Swindon is a joke town (not even a city) with no identity and virtually unknown outside of Wiltshire.

PS: we won the boat race, not that any true Oxonian or Oxfordian really cares about it.

How is hating your own local rivals irrational? After watching that video though add Bristol Rovers to my list of irrational hatred.

All as it should be, Eric. That's why these Brizzle folk only get to hate each other's clubs.

Can't really argue the toss about the respective merits of the 2, but that's not really the point is it. I'll happily go to Bristol or Reading if the wife gets me on a good day, but she knows better than to mention the O word

I think that Oxford's reputation as a world class city of heritage, culture and human achievement is mostly down to people from Swindon refusing to go near it, Dan. That and the university.

You'll need bigger bait than that to hook me in sunshine. Back on topic, I have an irrational hate for clubs that bottle back to back Wembley cup finals. You wouldn't know any teams that fit the criteria would you? :pmsl::pmsl::pmsl:

I'm far more disappointed that we got to Wembley than I am that we lost. Nice one.

I've heard about this Grimsbury thing but never seen it. It's a pity it's gone as I've heard it's rather amusing.

Basically this 14-15 year old girl with an awfully strong accent trying to talk sense about football. No idea what she is talking about mind. Probably developed a brain cell or two and deleted it.

It's an interesting point, Dan. I've never understood how clubs from the same city can have the same hatred as clubs from different cities/towns, where there is a sense of civic pride and parochialism added to the mix. Beyond football a lot of people in Oxford do not like Swindon, for historical and employment related reasons, it's probably the same the other way around, but in a same city environment you would not get that depth of hatred.

I'm glad it's the way it is, it's real and proper and part of my DNA that can never be changed.

There is something more visceral about having to go to another's backyard for a game. Not really knowing the lay of the land totally.

On one thing we will both agree - I miss going to the Manor.

The difference with sharing the same city (I appreciate your point by the way) is that it's constant. Even with us having been in different divisions for 17 years, the mutual dislike of each other has never relented.
While I totally get the point about clubs from other cities / towns, that rivalry can be put to one side while cross city rivalries just can't. There are pubs that I, as a red, won't go in and I'm sure it's the same for the rovers boys. Certain bars in the city centre are well known as city or rovers bars and it can regularly cause issues in the city centre.
I would have thought the fact that we never play each other anymore would have made the rivalry diminish but, if anything, it's made it worse. Should we find ourselves in the same division at any point, those games won't be for the feint hearted, that's for sure. The fact that both clubs have a neanderthal element hell bent on causing trouble doesn't help either.
While the vast majority of city / gas discussion is light hearted banter, it doesn't take much for that banter to spark something and that's the constant, it's always there. That's why inter city rivalries are so deep, it's always there.
I would imagine it's the same for any city with two clubs TBH.

But, unless you go into a bar with your colours on, how would anyone know if you were City or Rovers - especially if wearing gloves.

I don't get the 'gloves' bit. At least ours would only have 4 fingers and a thumb though! ;)
There are some people, on both sides, that would happily cause trouble by 'starting' in said red or blue bars. As I'm a red living on the blue side of the city, locals know I'm a red but, at 50 years of age, they also know I'm not and never have been a trouble maker.
I'll give you an example. we had some of our German friends from Dortmund over for a match a while ago and went for a drink in a local we don't generally use but know many that do. We walked into a load of half cut young wannabe rovers hoolies. To say our visit was uncomfortable would be a huge understatement. The landlord, a lovely bloke who we've known for years had to ask us to move to a separate lounge to diffuse the situation. The arseholes just wanted a fight because we were reds, we didn't know them at all. The Germans were threatened as well because they were with us FFS!
All we did was walk in to a local pub for a drink with visitors yet ended up with the threat of a kicking!
It would be the same for a blue in south Bristol I should think. I don't like it at all but that's what it CAN, unfortunately, be like if you're unlucky like we were.
In a 1 club town, things like that just don't happen I would imagine.

Some really interesting points regarding the two club city scenario. I can imagine that wandering into the wrong bar could cause problems, especially where a few drinks had been consumed. I would also presume that those who want to cause trouble with like minded fans of the opposition would recognise each other in many cases, even if they didn't know each other. My question is, what happens if you're out shopping in the city centre, minding your own business, and there's a mob of the other lot who recognise you? It must happen all of the time? Is the city centre in Bristol neutral territory?

The fact you haven't played Rovers for all that time, will actually make it more of a big thing when you do. It was the same with us and Swindon, and I wouldn't want the games too regularly as it could sanitize them a bit.

Oh, and yes Dan, I miss the Manor. Our heart was ripped out when we left there and I still can't believe I'll never stand on the left hand side London Road again!

I assume it happens Eric but we never hear about it. I don't move in those circles but would guess the two sides neanderthals know each other but that's a total guess. Bear in mind, like any city, central Bristol is heavily populated with CCTV cameras so any trouble makers can be easily identified.
As for the 'we haven't played Rovers', we actually did in the JPT but that was pretty tame in comparison to a league game. Don't get me wrong it was still a bit naughty by all accounts but I'm dreading it when we, eventually, play them in the league. It's bound to happen at some point and I would imagine it will be pretty bad.
I assume Sheffield is even worse as they're bigger clubs and will probably be on a level playing field next season for the first time in 6 (?) seasons. No doubt there are groups on both sides of Sheffield that will be looking forward to those dates.
Is our city centre neutral? Well we're a fair bit closer to the central areas but I've always thought of it as neutral although there are certain establishments which are certainly red and, no doubt, some blue as well.
It sounds bad but it's not really. What I would say is if you wanted a row about City and the gas,I don't think you would have to try too hard to find one, let's put it that way.
I'm another one who liked the Manor by the way. That lane (Cuckoo lane?) behind the away end was a bit worrying back in the day!

Strange how all these old crap holes bring back warm memories compared to the soulless stadia built recently.

Saying that, it's about time our craphole had a facelift - at least the 2 ends.

It was noticeable how run down it had become this year. But don't move to an out of town identikit stadium, you might turn into Reading! Far better to keep your identity where you are as there's room around the ground to expand, if it was ever necessary (and you could afford it)!!!

I have to say that the idea of wanting to hit someone based on their football team is really strange to me. I actually only hate Swindon because they're our rivals and sport, which is ultimately meaningless, is more entertaining if there is someone to dislike. If you got down to an individual level, I wouldn't want misfortune for any of them, maybe save for tripping over their shoelaces or something.

I couldn't agree more TTL, spot on fella!
I personally, have many good friends who support the gas and wouldn't want any harm to come to any of them. Yes, we have a damn good wind up but they're mates and it wouldn't even cross my mind to harm them. Unfortunately, every club has supporters that don't share our view, even in the modern era.

Bang on. The thought of hitting someone because they had the temerity to come from a different part of the world to me seems insane.
