Congratulations Northampton, I hope you enjoy your 12 months in League 1 before falling back through the trap door once again.

Hope so after all their sour grapes this time last year
thanks for the nice welcome! I take you don't like the fact everyone is on our side with what went on. Can't be nice having a guy like Barton in charge.

How is Ryan Loft doing?

I don't think fans are ever the first concern for tv companies...I remember being at a home game against Crawley in the Conference, a game that kicked off at nearly 8pm on a Sunday, with Setanta pushing the kick-off time back due to an over-run in whatever they were showing before...carpet bowls from Bognor Regis most likely!
We had Plymouth away moved this year with just 36 days notice to a 12pm kickoff on a Sunday - when there was physically no trains that got there for kickoff. Disgraceful.

Yeah, there are lots of catches here...

Thus, all opening and closing day fixtures will have to be moved from 3pm (unless it's decided that day is switched to a Sunday, say), and ifollow or similar club systems lose out on income from midweek matches. And presumably, as is the case with the National League at present, there'll be a late game (the one most optimised for TV views) each Saturday.

It's all shit for traveling fans, I think our South Stand contingent who ritually change "fuck Sky TV" every time one of our fixtures is picked (and I know we risk being one of their favourites....) more than have a point....
10 games a weekend with 5 of those championship guaranteed is going to make travelling a nightmare with more Friday night games and sunday matches. 23 games televised for every team in the championship a season and 15 for leagues 1 and 2. Take out the midweek games o course but even so.. it’s a lot of disruption for fans.

ah yeah, all the old classics..."They scored 101 goals, lost only four games and prospered with a sophisticated, dominant brand of football virtually alien to the third tier."

there's plenty that *try* and play passing football at this level, just not very many that are actually any good at it.

And that is the problem sometimes.

Teams think they can play pass it around at the back like prime Man C or Barca but fail miserably.

Surely that’s what makes him a good manager? Specifically the line about us conceding 0 goals in 46 games as a result of passing the ball from the back. And considering our whole game plan is to pass from the goalkeeper to the defenders, to the midfielders and finally to feed the likes of Broadhead and Chaplin. So being able to have players so comfortable on the ball from his coaching is the difference.

I think it’s an excellent article and it just so happens to be about Ipswich who have money. If the Plymouth manager har said exactly the same thing, nobody would bet an eyelid.

Exactly so us conceding zero goals from defensive mistakes as a result of that passing is the difference is it not? His style of football is very different to all of our recent managers in all honesty but it’s bloody good to watch.

I’m not saying he’s not a good manager or bitching about Ipswich having money - plenty of teams have had money at this level and still cocked up promotion, so it’s fair that you still need to be a decent manager to handle those resources, and bigger club = bigger pressure.

It’s more the implication that L1 is just direct teams and nothing but - which isn’t true.

I’m not getting offended on behalf of Wycombe, because we obviously *are* direct - the point is more that there’s more passing at this level than the article is giving credit for.

And also, so bloody what if teams play direct sometimes? There’s a fixation in football that passing for passings sake is the only way to win and be entertaining. For example, Spain in 2008-2012 were amazing and won everything but my god they were boring at times. Germany in 2014 were far better to watch.

I applaud Ipswich and McKenna for the football they played to gain promotion. But let’s not forget he needed the right players (and right budget) too. If he’d tried doing that with our defender Jubril Okedina, for example, infinite coaching wouldn’t have led to zero mistakes all seasons.

There’s such a double standard in football journalism too. If Man Utd or Arsenal or whoever score a goal from a direct bit of play (or god forbid a corner!) then it’s classed as a “brilliant long pass” but if someone in League 1 does it then it’s “long ball”.

I could go on about it all night, whether it be pitches or fitness of players or a premiership player hitting a worldie but Alfie May hitting a “speculative effort from the touch line”.

Grrrr rant over.

Micky Moore coming inbound from Cheltenham to be our new DOF. Cheltenham fans seem upset that he’s leaving which is always a good sign. This will most likely spell the end of Steve Cotterill which will anger our fanbase.

Gonna be a very, very busy summer at Salop. It’s a big overhaul which wasn’t needed with the squad we’ve got in place, we just needed to add squad depth for a push towards the top 6 as the foundations are in place with players like Marosi, Dunkley, Shipley and Bayliss. Just then need to sign Nurse, Leahy and Udoh back up which I reckon will happen.

I’ll judge what kind of season we’ll have come early August when I see what calibre of signings we make and if we let any of our big players go. Unfortunately I feel like Marosi and Bayliss will both be Championship bound.

It's a strange one with Micky Moore - there's no doubt he has an eye for a player and he's without doubt an important cog in our success since Michael Duff came tot he club in 2018.

However, for every Callum Wright and Alfie May, there's two players apiece who are simply woeful - Christian Norton, Charlie Brown, Indiana Vassilev.

I think I am disappointed that he's gone, but it was his second interview to leave the club in 7/8 months, and that strikes me as someone who doesn't want to stay at the club (the other was FGR). He was brought in as a mate of Andy Wilcox as well, and I suspect he may well now be sniffing around Shrewsbury like he was FGR a few months back after we kicked him off the board.

All that being said - it's imperative that we get his replacement right.

The dream would obviously be Steve Cotterill (assuming he's out at Shrewsbury), but that's definitely the heart ruling the head.

Cotterill won’t leave a management job for a DOF job, no chance. Can see Cotterill ending up at a big League 1 club or bottom half Championship club. Cotterill also makes no secret that he doesn’t like working with small budgets, can’t imagine Cheltenham will suit his demands on that.
