Not a new signing but James Coppinger has signed a new one year deal which will be his last year in professional football, absolute legend and I hope we are allowed to attend games and give him the send off he thoroughly deserves

I’ve got to say I’m really surprised a bigger club didn’t come in for him but really glad they didn’t. He’s got better with age and still turning defenders inside out. The biggest problem we have is that we can’t replace him.

Yeah it’s crazy really he’s proven year on year that he was a top player. When he was with us he showed glimpses where he would take the piss out of players but then go missing for a few games. But then, he was very young back then and he was playing in a poor team.

He’s heavily involved with Guisborough where he grew up and now lives again plus a kids football initiative so yes. I hope we can offer him some kind of role too. We have a few ex players involved with the Academy

Indeed, Gijs was our first and - until now - only Dutch player.

Going back to the salary cap which is still being discussed (and will be rejected by the likes of Peterborough, Portsmouth and Sunderland), I didn't realise this was actually the current rule:

So in effect, there is no cap.

From what I’ve been made aware it’s happening and is part of payments to be made to ensure no clubs go out of business due to the pandemic. Like before I don’t know the details

Very good signing for Rovers. Seem to be investing sensibly, and could be dark horses.

Talking of horses, if Hull come down they'll presumably bring Tom Eaves with them. Not a bad player, but always good for a show of embarrassing petulance when he visits Rochdale...

Back to the Salary Cap, the vote takes place on 30 July, the amount of clubs that require it to continue to survive out weigh those that don’t want it and so it will be voted in. Any player bought before the vote will only be counted as part of the average for next season. The limitation of squad size will not come into force until the 21/22 season. Expect a lot of footballers being out of work next summer unless they are prepared to take less money.

it means that if someone has signed a player for £5k a week before the vote they will be counted at whatever the average wage of a L2 player is (say £2k) and not at the £5k figure. Possibly why someone like Bolton getting big value wages sorted out early.

I guess you’ve not seen it, but Radford did a letter on behalf of the majority of L1/2 clubs (40 odd I think) that was pretty clear they wanted some sort of a cap in for next season.

Yeah, I’m not saying Kieran is wrong, because he’s usually spot on - but he’s definitely been wrong before but I’d need better confirmation to say that’s true.

Unless owner injections is via sponsorship, which we know about (hence why every says ‘One Call’ at the mill. You can’t put in interest free loans like in the conference.

Can I ask where you've seen this? We've been told that players signed now (before its voted in) will count fully towards the total allowed budget, even though that sounds ludicrous.

If it's voted in by the member clubs at the majority required by the EFL rules and regs there will be no basis for legal moves by anyone.

Not a lawyer but I would be highly surprised at that being the case. Collection of business coming together to fix the price of there main source of labour. No way the PFA (or indeed any union worth there salt) aren’t taking that through the courts. The EFL aren’t exempt from basic employee protection laws.

It’s like the countries airlines coming together and agreeing not to pay there pilots more than X amount. BALPA would be all over them like a rash.

That would certainly be one of the arguments that one would assume the EFL lawyers would put forward. Hard to argue that it doesn't suppress the collectives future earnings though do you not think? It is quite literally the overt purpose of the rule being brought in!

Collectively yes you're right - and the PFA doesn't exactly seam to care about the future of football as a whole, just it's players and maintaining certain PFA big wigs wages

Yeah the PFA, as with just about every institution in football to be quite frank needs some reform at the top, but they seem to have fulfilled some purpose during the current crisis as we had to go through them to get the players to take a wage deferral (which I think is perfectly correct in my view given the purpose of the union)

Id argue that the owners in proposing the cap are kind of showing a bit of a disregard for the future of football and there clubs as well. Its a headline grabbing rule that is short termist, potentially catastrophically so, and fails to hold the owners themselves to account for their poor running of clubs. If they really cared we would have genuine reform of club ownership and the requirements and burdens put on them being on the table, not just salary caps.
