See there we go then. Palace already been rebuffed twice most recently at £2m+clauses for a 21yr old Downes. With West Ham cited as ready to pay £5m which Lambert has stated will not even begin negotiations. Arsenal have also been scouting him.

Meanwhile, Whiteman 24 is being chased by Barnsley and BlackBurn Rovers. Go figure. I think the so far the only public bid I can find a source for is from Hull for £1m.

They're both too good for this league, irrespective of our difference of opinion.

He's here only because we were relegated... he's our academy product from age 7. It's not like he's had to drop down a league to find a club... unfortunately by the time he broke into our squad we were no longer a shit Championship side and we find ourselves down here.:err: If Flynn is still at a L1 side at the age of 24 something has gone terribly wrong (a la Whiteman!).

Anyway, back to transfers, I can't help but feel so many clubs have been hamstrung at short notice by this Salary Cap. I know some people in here will bork at £5-£8m bids, but the irony is it doesn't really make any sense to sell because until we shift 4 or 5 more bodies out on loans or transfers we have no wages to play with! For as long as that remains the case ME won't entertain anything under the £8m valuation, one of the positives behind having an £800m owner... whilst he doesn't make much available for transfers these days he does year on year plug a £5m shortfall.

Fair enough, I think it just shows how little either of us know about each teams players, the Hull one was for more than £1m. We took Ben from the Blades at 21, he’s now our Captain and outstanding at Defensive Midfield, chips in with goals and assists. The other thing is the Blades have a 30% sell on clause so must have been expecting good things from him. Anyway good luck getting £5m+ for your lad, I’m hoping we keep Ben.

So I owe Peterborough an apology.... transfer fees do not go towards the salary cap, which I find very strange considering in essence its part of the same budget.

I've down some calculations - because they have a lot of players U21. I estimate they have just assigned over £2.1m towards the cap, albeit there is a lot of pre-existing players that count towards the average.

Fair point, and then snap. I'm not confident of our abilities to trouble the top 6 even with Downes in the side but I am pretty damn sure it will be harder if we lose him.

I’d check out those player’s ages. Nathan Thompson is 30 and he’s got a tag as being an U21.

Jonny Smith was on loan with us two seasons back. Good player and had an eye for goal, BUT especially for a youngster, he lacked stamina and rarely lasted the full 90.

I’ve included him in the calculations but because he is already signed on a contract, he is only earning £113.600 for the sake of the cap inclusive of wages, bonuses, NI etc. I find that a bit of a nonsense really.

We've played our trialist for the full 90 yesterday he wore 17 but no one knows who he is!
Played in centre midfield and left midfield.

He was OK last season. Didn't break but hasn't got to the heights that he did in his first spell here. He played a reasonable amount of games but he wasn't one of Martins priority choices which obviously resulted in him getting released.

I wish him well though.

Finally named as Ramirez Howarth, former Blackburn but playing in the Welsh League the last season or two. Never known a trialist take so long to be named.

It's not strange really is it? They can still only replace a player and pay him with whatever they can do within the salary cap.

If transfer fees were included, you'd see very few fees being paid and the whole transfer chain would fall apart and you'd not be able to re-invest money that, in some cases, you've earned through player development. Would be even worse in L2 with their lower cap.

I also had a look at Ipswich over the weekend. Like Peterborough, I'd roughly estimate they have ~£200k to spare to spend on wages without going into the overspill. Yet Ipswich have probably a £6m budget in total!

We have taken Joe Nuttall on loan from Blackpool. Does not appear to have set the league on fire last season.

It’s the sound of silence over here so not heard anything, what position does he play? Is it view to a loan or permanent?

Hearts supposedly interested in Ginnelly now, maybe yours was a cheeky loan enquiry? I'd trust the guy where it came from.

Imagine Nugent to Northampton is off now they've got that lasher on loan.

It may not have been a loan but we just seem to take our time over decisions

We are after 3 strikers so still need 2, imagine we’ve signed Nuttall and will wait for Nugent to make his mind up

Dickie has gone to QPR for an undisclosed fee. Those that seem to know things reckon it was for 2.5 mil.

Step forward Rob Atkinson.

Was always going to move. This doesn't feel like such a loss (not because he isn't a good player) yet by virtue we have known and planned for it for some months, if not a year in advance.

A shame we are getting a cut-price fee but definitely replaceable (hopefully as you allude to, in the shape of Rob Atkinson).

Showing my ignorance of Oxford here. Just had to double check that Rob Atkinson wasn't the one we had on loan in 2007 from Barnsley, and then went to Grimsby. A decent, solid centre back who now plays for Grantham...

On top of Nuttall we've also signed the non-league trialist we had as well from Carshalton, Korboa. Still actively working on both Nugent and bringing Morton back as well, which seems greedy but before the Weekend we had only one Striker on the books who was our fourth choice in League two, so definitely needed some legs in. Mainly surprising that we havent gone for a target man to replace Oliver, pre season certainly didnt seem that Keith had seen the light and wanted to play it on the floor.

Downes reportedly handed in a transfer request.

Has also come out that the second Palace bid was just £1.6m.

The two clubs valuations are miles apart so he won't be going there.

I imagine more legitimate bids will start coming in now from elsewhere, though.

Morton supposedly joining Lincoln along with his WBA team mate Palmer

NEW: Understand Albion striker Callum Morton, who starred on loan at Northampton last season, has agreed a new 4-year contract with #WBA. Will sign this week before joining Lincoln on a season-long loan. #LincolnCity #imps

Understand there was interest from Morton from the Championship, too, but a season in League One should guarantee him the regular first-team starts Albion want for him. Lincoln boss Michael Appleton also wants Albion goalkeeper Alex Palmer on loan. #WBA

I'm saying this in the hope nothing goes catastrophically wrong at this late stage(!), but the Morton and Palmer deals have been in the pipeline and verbally agreed since the final week of July. There's a reason we're 4 days from the season starting and only have two strikers and one GK...

Northampton kept putting their name in the ring about Morton, as you'd expect for a successful loan player, but it was never going to happen. The Morton wait was over his new deal and the Palmer wait is for WBA to get another GK in as number two.

Appleton obviously knows everyone at WBA but he's also coached Morton and Palmer before and knows them personally so that will have had a big influence as well.

Sounds good to me Luke, Morton is obviously very needed with only Hopper and Scully as main strikers. Ross has looked very decent so far being the only senior keeper available but Palmer did very well for Plymouth last season by all accounts.
