Closer to home for him, but would have thought he'd be looking at a bigger club if I'm being honest.

He enjoyed his time here and was open to staying if we gave him a big new contract, but big contracts is something we don't really give out so we didn't bother in offering him anything at all. Thought he'd end up at Bolton or Derby. or someone like that.

One last thing I'd say is he was very hot and cold form wise last season.
I'd agree but at a bigger club he might not play every week. We're pretty ambitious as a club, we're trying to incrementally grow our crowds each year and I think we have huge potential. There are so many 'dormant' Vale fans about that 'used to go' or 'follow' us.

I also find with a lot of lower league clubs (and I include Stoke in this), is that fans go to the games but they're not massively arsed or they also support another club. Whereas Vale fans talk about Vale all the time aside from matchday. There's a real passion there for the club and a bit of an obsession with the club that if harnessed could really see us progress.

I can assure you most fans don’t talk about any other club than their own. I certainly don’t give a shit about anyone but my team. Above country. The only other club I support is my local non league one - Lichfield city.

Guess it would depend on money if he was in talks (no idea on if the rumour is true or not).

We’ve been beating competition to signings so far and been fairly aggressive in getting targets, part of the reason we cut costs in January was allegedly to save for a summer window and we’ve made 3-400k, the striker signing is crucial to get right though as we need to replace Wilson, Taylor and Proctor.
It looks like we were also heavily interested in Ripley but lost out due to location. Dont think he has ever been down south full time before

To be honest our DOF did say when they held a forum with him last month we do use location as one of our biggest points of difference in signing players. Halfway between two of our biggest cities in Manchester and Birmingham as well as easily accessible to the East Midlands too it does open our net further for those who might not want to move home.

Ripley is a similar one I would have expected him to go bigger so we are doing something right, we are ambitious which seems to be mentioned by new signings in terms of being progressive and have increased the crowds and supporter based since Covid, think last season was our highest attendances since we were in the Championship by some distance (actually 1998).

In most years gone by we've had the remnants no one else wants (except possibly 2 season back) so its nice to see us actually competitive in the market for once!

Apparently ourselves, Blackpool and Barnsley are after young Liverpool forward Layton Stewart.

I can assure you we are not. As we have both said, there is no derby. No rivalry, never has never will be. Cant speak for the press office typing shit. Will seen them later as I’m up there.
Wait till we play derby - they will be in full flow then. Talking rubbish as usual trying to fill Twitter.

I think that's great and there's certainly fans like you at most clubs. I just find with some of the clubs in the bottom 2 divisions, 75% of their support almost certainly supported someone else before they started doing well. They're not committed or lifelong fans. Funnily enough, I find it a lot with Stoke fans that I know. They're not really that 'in' to it. Half of them don't know who they are playing at the weekend and don't even know some of their players. I know quite a few Stoke fans but only maybe a couple that I would class as passionate.

Maybe you are right.
Ironically 2 Stoke fans ( season ticket holders ) catch the train and come and watch games with me. Got that fed up with the shit served up. Been 8 years now they have come over about 6-7 times a season.
It’s not uncommon for people to support 2 league teams especially if it’s prem and league 1 or 2. Personally I hope the prem disappears up its own arse. Especially now fa cup replays Will go next season.

I can't speak on behalf of other supporters, though I'd be inclined to assume that most supporters across League One and League Two are fairly loyal in terms of their identity (barring a handful of sides with no history).

I would think if you surveyed most Oxford supporters, they'd identify as Oxford United support first and foremost of varying degrees who do genuinely care. At this level, clubs are in much more precarious positions and are more heavily influenced by external factors. I gather most fans recognise that.

We have signed centre back Sam Lavelle from Charlton on a 2 year deal.

At last a new face!!

He sounds like a decent signing for us too so I'm fairly pleased.

Do we have enough centre backs now?

And by the way, Jack Ellis can play as a right centre back. So we have 6 players for 3 spots

Now we've just gone and signed midfielder Dylan McGeouch on a 2 year deal from Forest Green Rovers who was voted as their player of the season.

Nice.

By far our best player. He was at our friendly the other night, raising hopes he might stay. You lot have just crushed that dream. You utter bastards.

Are you a bit less panicky now?

We still need some forwards, a keeper and a right back but nearly 2 months left to get players in. We have some on trial anyway. I’ll run the rule over them tonight.

Carlisle can now focus on attack.

Can see them trying for Gordon again now higher level then two others

So tonight we have 'on trial' Reece Cole and Julien Dacosta.
The latter fills me with more hope than the former

Would love Gordon back, seems like he has potential to get better with age, especially under a manager like Simmo. Hope he uses the 'I won the world cup' line when convincing big clubs to send us good players.

Sorry Chris but that's just the nature of this sport and you should be pleased you only lost out on him to a bigger and better club in a higher league.

Unlike ourselves who have recently lost out on players because someone else nicked them from us at the last minute or just because another club 'matched their ambitions' even when that other club is just err Shrewsbury..

The first of the young lads, Freddie Draper, has gone out on loan to Walsall whose Chairman, ironically enough, has just invested into the Irish Club Draper was on loan at until a couple of weeks ago, Drogheda.

Suspect we'll see lots of loans out as we get closer to the season, we've got about 10 half decent Academy players coming through but need to be out playing games and developing for the next two or three seasons.

Sonny Bradley confirmed. A two year deal. It’s been one we’ve grafted for since before the end of last season - he was always earmarked for the centre of our back three and essentially to fill the leadership void left by Curtis Davies.

I’d say it’s really a statement signing on our part - he would’ve had championship interest and we really needed to force our hand so it’s good we got him in.

Now to focus on our attacking options - we hopefully should have one more, a striker, before Sunday.

We're apparently set to re-sign GK Luke Southwood on a permanent deal. Would be very very happy with that.

Conor Washington now confirmed. Not massively thrilled, but we are in dire need of depth. Collins and Washington are ok players at this level, but hopefully we have one more up our sleeve for that spot.

Good player and great leader. Centre of a back 3 is perfect for him now as he was never the most athletic but he has lost some of what he had with some recent injuries, he’s good with the ball at his feet though so don’t get any misconceptions that he’s just a head it/kick it type got a good pass between the lines on him.

His lack of athleticism was very clear in his appearances toward the end of last season and why I think it was announced before the playoffs he would be leaving. As long as you’re not playing a high line and asking him to be isolated he’ll fit in nicely
