I’m glad he’s retired because I was worried Clough may sign him

Think we all secretly were!

As said elsewhere, neither clough not the (sensible) fans would want us to blow it all on brunt when in reality it’s not much to wrexham, now we’re up a league who’s to say we can’t get someone in on loan (if we haven’t signed someone) equally as good from a prem side.

We were 6th/7th budget wise in league 2, so for some fans on stagsnet to all of a sudden think we’re going to compete with the big boys in league 1 is rather a stretch of the imagination.

What we do have is a competitive budget which would be similar to your lincoln’s/northampton’s and one of the better, most respected managers in the lower leagues which will count for a lot (and continues to do so as proven by lee gregory signing).

We only triggered the option to see if some mug would pay money for him. Harvie was a top passion merchant, but the last two seasons haven't shone him in the best light.

Cheers Wycombe.

Sounds like you are in for Shipley at Shrewsbury

Most were, hence going from 3rd in League 1 to facing a second season in League 2 in 2 calendar years.
The main constants in our last two seasons were the defence and it's no surprise we got relegated/failed to get promotion with that same defence. Clearing them out was a must for us, and thankfully we've gotten a fee for one of them.

If 2020-2022 Dan Harvie comes back then it's a great bit of business all around. If it's the last two seasons? We'll be by far the happier camp in Buckinghamshire.

Udoh going to Wycombe is an insult. May as well just not bother starting the season. Do Wycombe only set their scouts out to watch Salop? Grimmer, Jacobson, Phillips, Leahy and now Udoh in recent times.

Have to admit, very hard to get excited about the season ahead currently. Sounds like Shipley is off to Brum now, bids made for Bloxham too so I’m told. The amount of interest in our players you would think we finished in the play offs last season, it’s a joke!

I’m clinging onto the fact we’ve got Hurst as gaffer as if we didn’t then I’d say we’re certain to drop. But as long as Hurst and Doig are with us, I’ll back us.

Clough has always found what he needed, his reputation gets him far, wouldn’t be surprised if we ended with another defender on loan from forest possibly also, we’ve a good relationship with them.

Sounds like Shrewsbury are getting rinsed. They could soon have a big job rebuilding like Crawley
We have 12 players on our books, 4 of which are new signings. So just 8 remain from last season but talks that we’re losing Shipley, Bloxham and Perry now too. Wouldn’t be at all surprised to see bids for Winchester as he’s a very good midfielder for this level. I wouldn’t blame Hurst for walking at all tbh.

Shipley has been mentioned on our forum as someone we are looking at. Just Twitter/X rumours though

In a strange twist of events, George Dobson has cancelled his Fehevar contract as he wants to stay with family in the UK. He's now a free agent. Nathan Jones likes him so would definitely be expecting us to try and resign him. Have also heard whispers that Orient and Wrexham are interested. There's definitely bad blood between Dobson and our board, hence why he refused our contract to sign for Fehevar in the first place so despite his status at the club he may have no interest in a return. He's not good enough for the championship so would definitely expect him to end up at a League One club.

There’s two League One clubs in for Shipley, you’re definitely not one of them neither are Mansfield so I don’t know where that’s come from. It’s Birmingham and one other.

We need to strengthen in that position so not suprised, doubt we could match a wage from yourselves. We already missed out on Bakinson who signed for Wycombe over us.

Not heard any rumours but Teddy Bishop also fits the type of midfielder we’re after.

I think the original issue was Andy Scott who was in charge of recruitment, etc didn't rate him so wasn't offering any increase in wages despite Dobson having been excellent for us and being club captain so he signed a pre contract elsewhere. I don't imagine his wages at us were too high so would be dependent on whether we'd be willing to backtrack and improve our offer from Jan. He lives near your training ground and we have technically signed his replacement.

Haha there is no way Ipswich are asking £1m for a striker who got 12 goals in league one last season (and no we wouldn't pay 100k, let alone £1m)

I'm told he is keen to come back to us if a deal can be done. I should imagine you've moved on if that's what you're being quoted.
Sky Sports reporting he's set to sign for us in a deal worth £1m. Sounds like you think we've had our pants pulled down with that but any input on how you think he will do and what type of striker he is?

We don't have one single player over the age of 29 in the entire squad after JDB & Jerome being released. Not that I wanted to keep them but I'm personally hoping we bring in a centre mid who can be the glue, leader & do the dirty work to allow the others to play. George Thomason is literally the only one who tries to do them things but it's not his natural game & his 17 yellow cards show it. Obviously it's a positive to have a youngish squad with sellable assets but they can capitulate in an instance not having anybody on the pitch guiding them through sticky situations with some nous & s-housery. The lads we're linked with especially Joel Randall are just more technical, don't fancy it when it gets tough type players it seems like but Evatt must know it's his last crack at L1 with us you can't keep neglecting the need for leadership/experience to get you over the line.

Did Hurst do OK when he went returned to you? I've always rated him as a manager but he seemed to completely have lost the plot last season at Grimsby. His signings were bizarre.

Nik Tzanev signed as back up keeper.

After the departure of Sherring our ‘handsome bastard’ quota was hit hard so good to see we’ve acted quickly.

Wow!! Well, he is a good player, works hard and can hold it up but I wouldn't say he's worth £100k, let alone £1m. The best way I can describe him is a modern day number 9 and will get you goals but £1m....surely this is a joke.

The football world is a mad place these days.

If I had to guess I’d imagine the deal is probably 600k with various add ons to take it up to £1m. That’s probably most of our transfer budget though so sounds like a gamble. A modern day number 9 is what we are desperate for in this system tbf

Also to note he has struggled with injuries wherever he has been. Burton, Ipswich and with us. All long term/niggly injuries.

After what he inherited from Matt Taylor, keeping us up was the aim and he achieved that. Our home form was relegation worthy but our away fork was play off worthy which ultimately kept us up in the end. Just need to find that balance this season and Hurst can’t have any excuses as almost all will be his own players.

One thing I’m fairly certain of, we’ll be the fittest team in the league and that’s what got us 3rd position back in 2018 under Hurst and Doig. Teams would be dead out on their feet and we would just steamroll teams in the last 15-10 minutes. Never known us to score as many late goals as that season. Our physio that season (now back with us as Hurst has brought him back) went on a podcast and said that Hurst and Doig would make the players run almost every week up and around the Shropshire Hills, never seen a fitter team and that was the main factor in us having that ridiculous season.

Hopefully lightening can strike twice as certain managers just suit certain clubs to a tee. Paul Hurst is Shrewsbury equivalent to John Coleman at Accrington.

I dont think thats as much of an advantage these days with the number of subs allowed

Maybe, maybe not. We covered the most miles out the whole of the Football League that season, I mean, it can’t be seen as a hindrance. We can’t compete with clubs like Birmingham, Bolton or Huddersfield financially so we have to try and get small advantages in other aspects as Hurst puts it. This being one of them.

I get that. I think its lost us an advantage as we used finish games strongly and score a lot of late goals, which seems to have dried up since the introduction of more subs came in.
Could be coincidence though I guess

Maybe I'm grossly underestimating the market given where we're shopping, but I think anything over 250k is grossly overpaying, so the numbers being banded about, even if a third of it is dependent on him getting to the moon, seem bonkers to me.

He's fine, he's a decent finisher and he's reasonably good in the air, doesn't really contribute much from an assist/passing standpoint from what I remember so he'll need good service to succeed. Can't help but feel his ceiling is middle-third L1 though, he's only a season-removed from not doing it at Ipswich in this league, and as SVH says he has a pretty poor injury record. I'd have had him back for sure at the right price but we're obviously in a different market to Charlton.
