Stickied League 2 Away Support Thread 2024/25

Grimsby's away followings are usually impressive and have been consistent for a long time. But best away support in the country is a stretch.

However everyone knows clubs take higher numbers on afternoon games as against evening games as well as games which are close to the away side ( ie derby matches).

I also thought that a mean average is not the correct way to do these but a better way is the median average. This reduces the effect of sell outs at derby games with small away capacities or massive one off attendances like Stags at County.

So I have done a proper willy waving table based on median average, distance travelled and if afternoon or night game. The list is based on a travel distance of 150 miles on an afternoon or a night game distance of 100 miles.

If there is enough interest, I will post the latest table later.

Very good attendance for both Friday’s games: Tranmere v Doncaster & Newport v Walsall.

They had the 4th & 5th highest home attendance for entire weekend.

And the away attendance was pretty good as well: Doncaster 5th & Walsall 6th.

I can remember regularly going away with GTFC when we were in the Championship and being in some very paltry away crowds back then, yet now we’re been in much crapper leagues for the last 20 years yet our away support has gone through the roof and I can’t remember at what point that all changed? And it’s not like because we’re in a worse league we have better results as barring last season we’re always in the bottom half of League 2 so it’s pretty baffling as to how our away numbers are so good right now.
One thing for certain is that we all took being in the Championship way too much for granted.

We definitely took being in the Championship for granted in the 2000s too.

It's worth noting though that this is the first young generation that have been well and truly priced out of Premiership football. Can't get a ticket to go with all your mates to a top flight game if you're a kid these days so they've gone and supported their local sides instead. It's why crowds and away followings are up and it's brilliant to see because, only a decade ago, crowds were dropping year on year in Leagues 1 and 2.

I can add another name to the list of taking the Championship for granted. Unsurprisingly it was a great time supporting the club (at times) and at the time you probably think it will last a lot longer than it does, so in hindsight yes taken for granted.

Our home support was noticeably worse then than it is now two leagues lower. That's simply incredible and as TNO says brilliant to see attendances up across the board. We are lucky our city rivals hit the jackpot recently and reached the expensive Premier League.

Yeah, it's notable how nowadays we get lots of kids in who'll happily pay under a tenner to stand behind the goal and throw bottles at the opposition keeper. Although I do wonder who of them will stay on once they reach 18 and have to pay full price to watch terrible football (those who haven't already got stadium bans).

I believe we're more popular with red than blue as far as the local spawns of satan are concerned - depressingly, Everton have cheaper season tickets than us and their kids tickets are reasonably priced. Fortunately for us, they're also shite... Liverpool on the other hand are a tourist trap of a club and the local brats have no chance of getting into Anfield.

Fair play, thats some cracking effort. You brought just under half what Salford brought and they were on a Saturday less than an hour away. Hats off to every single Sutton fan who made it.

I didn't hear the total figure over the tannoy as we were on the attack and everyone round me didnt' hear it either. Looked pretty close to full from where I was.

F*ck me, the sooner FGR disappear back to non-league the better.

Average attendance last night: 5732 but their attendance of 1440 is almost 1,000 less than 2nd worst attendance at Harrogate of 2304.

Compare their attendance to the two promoted teams: Wrexham – 10183 & Notts Co – 8095.

Even Stockport had more away fans (2141) than did FGR have at TNL.

8095 is another impressive attendance for Notts on a cold October evening against Newport who brought just shy of 200.

Very positive outlook if these gates remain throughout the season as they should.

Wrexham also 5 figures on a Tuesday night versus Sutton. Fantastic effort, reaping the rewards of last season

1440 is indeed pretty poor. You'd be at least expecting 4k. Hopefully they'll sort their form out and they'll find some sort of resolution to their attendance woes.

8095 is another impressive attendance for Notts on a cold October evening against Newport who brought just shy of 200.

40 odd years ago Notts struggled to get any more than 8,000 through their turnstiles for many top flight fixtures so undoubtedly the game in general is thriving at the moment.
