How is it that AFC Wimbledon played their first game in 2002, and Wimbledon FC didn’t move to MK until 2003 and didn’t change their name to MK Dons until 2004.
Because the original Wimbledon fans started AFCW as a reaction to their chairman announcing he intended to relocate the club to Milton Keynes even before it had been approved by the FA, I believe?

So A.F.C. Wimbledon have never been in the top tier of English football and hence should not be in that second tier of big clubs on that list higher up this thread.

I don’t think you quite get it yet Son of Cod, you are never allowed to suggest that other teams might be bigger than Mansfield.

Heaven forbid if you ever actually buy anyone from them

We seem to have mastered the art of growing the fan base as we get progressively shitter.

The Natural Order should always be consulted in cases like this.

AFC Wimbledon are a tinpot regen I'm afraid, not too dissimilar to AFC Chester and Halifax 2008.

I think we're a solid top 6-8 outfit at this level. We lose points for the National League North stint. Truly pathetic that was.

What does count in our favour is the following we get in the Far East, particularly in Japan.

The thought of a bunch of Japanese County fans attempting to sing “The Scarf My Father Wore” is hilarious.

not getting involved in the Wimbledon imbroglio but Notts have defo never been Prem League

We’ve been a member of it to be fair. Technically.

Notts are always a hard one to judge in these kinds of lists because we’re a historically significant club that’s spent more time in the top flight than some genuinely big ones like Palace and Ipswich. But the realities of modern football and our neighbour means that we don’t have the potential fanbase of big one-club cities and towns like Bradford or Swindon.

Tbf we have Leeds who are closer than some clubs are to each other in London for instance, there were so many Leeds fans at my school in the heart of Bradford for instance so while not quite as much we do also suffer that kind of issue. Plus we have Huddersfield nearby who have won the top flight 3 times themselves.

Oh it’s obviously a thing for all of us, it’s just a unique problem for Notts even compared to the likes of Vale and BRovers in two club cities because we’re so close we don’t even really have an area around our ground we can focus on to try and grow our fanbase.

Must be awful. All we have to compete with is Liverpool and Everton.

The thing about Nottingham is that if you can get to Notts, you can get to Forest, there's no barrier whatsoever. In the short term though their recent success has probably benefitted us a bit, as it's hard to get tickets at Forest so more people are coming to watch us to get to a game.

In other news, Salford have decided to move their home game against Notts to "trial a new start time". At least in the Vanarama they knew how to treat tinpot nonsense like that.

Is there a rivalry between the two Notts teams, or do you get people supporting both?

It's not a city rivalry you hear much about outside of Nottingham.

I’ll probably piss them off a bit here but it seems similar to us and BPA. Their friendly was on sports news the other day and it was a full house so maybe they like both. Reason I say that is we don’t have friendly’s against Leeds or Huddersfield and our last one against Halifax was behind closed doors due to the police so we don’t bother anymore. Can’t imagine the Sheffield teams or Bristol teams having a pre season friendly every season.

A lot of Man United fans at my school. Only one of my mates was a City fan. Got Leeds fans in my family too.

I used to work with a large group of footy fans a few years ago and there were only two of us who supported City. Newcastle, Liverpool, Chelsea, Leeds, and Man United fans mostly. None of them had been to a game. Most of them couldn't even name half their starting eleven.

It's not a million miles away, but the Leeds fans I know feel similarly about Bradford. I think the difference with that rivalry is that, much as you'll get some idiots, Notts fans in general aren't that fussed either. At the friendly on Saturday there were loads of Forest fans in the Notts stands and I didn't see or hear of any trouble.

I can't really think of a similar situation in the top leagues. Maybe if Everton went 30 years without playing Liverpool in the league you'd see something similar there.

Try living in an overspill town if you want to talk about supporting other clubs.

Every London club you can think of plus Brighton, Pompey & Southampton....and very weirdly a southern born and bred lad who supported Halifax in my classes.

Yes I don’t think any Leeds fan outside of Bradford or certain parts of Leeds will know anything about Bradford, mainly due to them being an ‘international brand’.

There is nothing wrong with that approach, in our friendly’s with BPA the fans mix and most City fans look out for their results or go to the odd game.

I’m not sure about the Liverpool and Everton thing though, the Bristol clubs haven’t been in the same league for god knows how many years but can’t imagine they’d be the same. And scousers are far worse.

I reckon the difference with the Bristol teams is that there's no alternative rivalry for the other team. If Everton dropped a couple of leagues then Liverpool fans would just focus on the rivalry with Man United, like Forest fans did with Derby. Every situation is different though

Don't City have a bit of a thing with Cardiff?

Try being a historically non-league club based in a non-descript suburb of London.

I was one of two regular Sutton fans at my school. Most of the kids in my school were Chelsea fans, with a few fans of the other London clubs, and of course Manchester United.

10 years ago we averaged about 500, last season it was 3200. When I go back to Sutton for matches, I’m still shocked to see people walking around the high street in SUFC gear, something that would never happen when I lived in the area about 15 years ago

Some go to both. Forest tend to be condescending until we beat them and personally I see Forest as our direct rivals and can't stand them. Always want them to lose and can't quite give up on the hope that one day we'll be in a division higher than them.
Stags, Chesterfield, Derby and Leicester are all derbies but Forest is the big one.

We're so far apart that Forest fans don't feel it, Derby is their big rival. Having said that some Forest fan was giving it the big one at half time in the back of the Kop and some Notts fan head butted him.

I always assumed County were the team for the football hipsters and Forest were for the plastics.

I'd definitely want to be a County fan if I was from Nottingham.

I’ve always been pro-Forest as opposed to Notts County.

I’ve always appreciated the level of support Forest had, even when they were utter tripe.

We played Forest quite regular around the mid-2,000’s and them fetching 5,000+ to VP was on the regular.

Understandably, it’s difficult for County to mirror that kind of support, but the whole takeover thing with Sven, Campbell and Lee Hughes etc didn’t help. Getting absolutely pumped at theirs on the opening day in 2009 was fucking awful.

County fans sing about a wheel falling off and Forest have a few classics.

Not really, but more so than the Bradford/BPA example I think and it’d likely grow quite quickly if we ever played each other on a regular basis.

We’ve only played them in a competitive game once in my time and that was an entirely weird occasion, a League Cup tie played in the middle of those huge national riots when they had Steve McLaren and Martin Allen appealing for people to behave so it could go ahead and that largely happened. No idea what it’d be like under more normal circumstances.
