Let's face it, every club will have an idiot element...my club might be smaller than many (as we keep being reminded) but we have a few fans who really haven't been house trained!

I feel like Notts County and Lincoln should just mutually agree to be rivals.

Neither team has a real rival, the clubs they hate the most hate another club more. It just makes sense.

Us too!

There was a survey a while back about rivalries, who everyone hated. And at the other end of the scale was the likes of us, yourselves, York and some others, without a single vote.

No-one hates us, we don't care...

Who would you say your 'biggest' rival is?

The GM teams are a bit funny. Rochdale have Bury. Oldham are a bit on their own like you. Bolton Wigan. City Utd obviously. You're definitely not rivals with Salford.

We've played you a lot in our time, but I see you as just a decent game but no more than that.

It depends on the person really. Older fans hate Burnley and Stoke the most due to clashes with them but we've not played them in years.

Personally as Cheshire based, Crewe are up there but not everyone feels the same. I always thought our games with Macc were derbies but a lot of ours turned their noses up at that being a big game. I never see Oldham, Rochdale etc as derbies but some do. We just don't have a traditional rival.

Be careful what you wish for, you might get assigned Bromley.
I can remember Lincoln fans used to claim they were not our rivals when we used to beat them all the time, then when they got better than us and started beating us suddenly they were our rivals again with a nice shiny banner to prove it. :bg:

There’s a huge difference between rivalry and downright hatred. Swindon-Oxford is the latter. Bristol Rovers/City and Reading is a rivalry.

A Crewe Stockport rivalry makes sense but has never really took off, certainly from our side. As both clubs don't really have a main rival. For our selves it's the Stoke and Vale games that have that edge to them. Hard to judge as not really played either much in my 20 years following Crewe but Chester and Wrexham also come ahead of Stockport. County probably battle it with Tranmere, Shrewsbury and Macc as out 5th biggest rival.

I think Notts are actually our shortest trip out of the Notts, Mansfield, Boston, Grimsby, Chesterfield, Scunny, Doncaster clutch of local(ish) sides - Grimsby the furthest away.

As an old 'un the rivalries I grew up with were Hastings and Dover. I did think we might get Dover back again for a while but they seem to have gone. I did enjoy playing Orient but it is not a rivalry and the same with Luton and Wimbledon in the conference .

A few years ago I was "interviewed " for a fans podcast in Fratton Park and was asked if I saw us as serious rivals for Pompey. I looked around at the 16k people packed into the ground and laughed.

Seems everyone hates us but we are beneath being a rival.

I could see it getting bigger if we both went toe to toe for a promotion for example.

As I say I'm Cheshire based so Crewe and Macc were always bigger games for me than a lot of our other fans. A lot of people in South Manchester/Stockport way are moving out to new builds in areas like Sandbach, Holmes Chapel, Congleton etc, I don't know if that will connect the two towns more, the clubs etc which could strengthen a rivalry. I think as a club we'll may start targeting the areas I mentioned to get families to come to our games which could tread on your toes and create a bit more hostility. I never liked the fact you always did a lot of good youth player scouting in South Manchester/North Cheshire, areas that we should have been more proactive in.

But as you say it isn't really a rivalry but theoretically could be given time and sustained spells in the same division

Our obvious rivals, Chester, are absolutely useless and always have been so I always liked the rivalry with Shrewsbury more. We haven't played them in ages though.

I don't think anyone at either us or Tranmere consider ourselves rivals despite not being too far away. Although there usually is some needle at the games. Back in the before times we did used to have some tasty games with Port Vale and Crewe. Also none of the Welsh teams really like each other, but as they are all dirty Hwntw bastards they aren't really rivals as such.

Our traditional, historic rivals are in the Isthmian league, and we haven’t played them in over a decade. Some of our younger fans have a hatred towards Bromley, but they’re stuck in non-league football for the foreseeable so we’re currently rival-less. (For obvious reasons Wimbledon will have another focus for their ire this season)

I live in Macclesfield and know a few Stockport fans around here but I've never seen Stockport as a rival. In my 20 odd years of going we've rarely been in the same league for long. Similar to how I see Shrewsbury really. Local games but never spend too much time together in the modern day.

Tranmere we've played loads but there's never any needle. I think we have very cordial relations going back to the promotion we won together in 1989.

Vale and Stoke the big two owing to lots of Stokies working in the Crewe area and we don't even play Stoke anymore. Not played Chester and Wrexham in years so they're dormant rivalries these days but there are much closer ties between Chester and Crewe than Stockport and Crewe plus the England-Wales edge with Wrexham is also another factor.

Macclesfield was just a preseason game that became a league game for a few seasons. Only dislike them now cos that tit Savage is involved.

Let's knock the rivalry chat on the head, Masi will be here in a minute telling us all Bolton's fierce rivals are Man United.

Thought. Stockport‘s rival when they were in the Championship was Man City.

I was at that game, remember the chants of get down off the pylons after some fans~possibly Crewe, had climbed onto the floodlights for a better view. Agree no needle between our fans.

Unsure who Tranmere Rovers would class as rivals. There was a lot of recent bad history with Bolton in the 90 and 00s but don’t think they fell into genuine rival category. Historically possibly Chester, but since they moved partly into Wales, have switched their attention to Wrecsam. We’ve had issues with our nearest opponents for the coming season, definite bad blood for whatever reason, but don’t think rivals. Looks like there’s a vacancy…

Dover, Maidstone or Dartford ???
Well we’ve drawn them in the Kent Cup and it’s just down the road, I guess that’ll have to do.

How would you rank your rivals?

I've always assumed your fans hate Grimsby the most, we've barely played in my lifetime and won't again for many years so I wouldn't even class Lincoln as our rivals at this point

Lincoln and Town fans won't rank each other top but both sets of fans have done great jobs of getting under each other's skins at certain points over the last few decades. The Alexander/Slade years were good as it culminated in us beating them in a playoff semi, then we had several seasons of dross with some total shitshows of teams/matches that resulted in us both going down to the Conference. All the way through this and during those Conference years we rightly derided them for never really travelling well to BP which they hate, but then the Cowleys went and invented football creating a monster in the process and all that pisstaking was thrown back at us in the worst possible way as they leap frogged us into League One.

Tbh from a personal point of view I'm not really sure. I can't say I get wound up by rivalries - you obviously don't want local sides to beat you or be successful though. When I was younger, I got far more into Lincoln games against Scunthorpe, Boston and Peterborough than I did Grimsby but ask someone who's a slightly different age and they'd probably say different.

Mansfield, Chesterfield, Notts are just local games, they have their own area there for their rivalry triangle. Doncaster are only local as well, there's no real history there.

We always had the Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Boston rivalries. But in Boston's case, they sank down the leagues years ago and even friendlies don't have any real excitement or trouble to them anymore. Grimsby fans probably see their rivalries as Scunthorpe, Lincoln and Doncaster(?).

SoC probably covers it fairly well to be fair and I'd agree. It almost feels like Lincoln/Grimsby ended up as rivals by default in recent history because no-one else locally has been at roughly the same level for long enough, and in Boston and Scunthorpe's case, won't be for a while either. That's why I agree with SoC when he says neither side would put each other top. It's not some sort of pride thing where neither set of fans can bring themselves to do it and give the other side the satisfaction of doing so, it's just all felt a bit of a circumstantial, I don't want to say forced, rivalry at times.

In fact, I'd probably argue a huge chunk of Lincoln fans get far more wound up by Peterborough than Grimsby, I do, and they're only an extra five miles or so away anyway.
