I noticed on the football league show highlights there was a fella on the terrace with no one around him for 50 yds, now I'm not the world's best lip reader, but I'm sure he was shouting " were doomed ,we're doomed I tell thee" was that Mr Hellogregory?

Was he also wearing a board stating " the end is nigh"?

Well, we lost to Tranmere, Pools and York. Cheltenham too got the 3 points at The Abbey, so I'm not optimistic about doing everyone down here a favour tomorrow. A win would see them right back in it, and if they really want to avoid the drop, they've got to go all out for the 3 points. However, we play better away from home, so there could still be some hope we could grab a point.

As for Rovers, I think they'll get 4/6 pts in their next 2 games (Oxford and Accrington), and it's vital they do as they know their last two games are very tough. But they could still get something from their trip to Plymouth if the latter have secured their playoff place by the time they meet. If luck's on their side, they could also face a Bury side with nothing to play for.

I'm expecting Pools to win tomorrow too, but don't think they can get anything down at The Kenny, irrespective of Luton's current terrible form. Also not sure they'll be able to beat Exeter as they've been very impressive this year. Actually I give them more chance of winning at Carlisle.

Goal difference could turn out to be the defining factor.

It's just our confidence, it's very fragile.

If we go a goal up we normally do alright and tend to hang on, but the minute we go behind and a team gets behind the ball we are screwed

We're the perfect team for you to play then because we've conceded first in nine out of our last ten games. To be honest, it feels like we've spent the last two and a half years constantly chasing leads after conceding stupid sloppy goals from set pieces.

You get tired of applauding whenever we play a ball off an opponent for a throw-in then?
Just felt like I ought to enjoy our last few football league games in the comfort of a plastic seat.

Bricking it for tonight. Got a really bad feeling that we are going to bottle it.

Curzon Ashton....and Carlisle
what an interesting evening, this is when I love being involved in something, we are not playing tonight but you have to keep an eye on everything as it could be such a huge evening.

its easy to say while sat played into our hands fixture wise, us having the easy on paper game and the rest nightmares, this midweek is opposite with others having easy games and us the nightmare.

but with us not playing it means we know what pressure comes on us tomorrow night, maybe lots or maybe none, a great night for us here can see us all but safe heading into tomorrow, a nightmare night for us tonight can see us desperately hoping to grab something from the current best side in division with them needing just that one win to pretty much seal promotion.

the question is of course what result best suits Mansfield vs Tranmere, do I want a draw so both flog points or do I assume Chelts have gone and want a defeat for one of them to give a massive morale crushing blow at a vital time

In regards to the games that matter

Cheltenham Vs Cambridge - Think this is win or gone for Chelts, I thinkthey can win this game but I wonder if nerves may kick in during the game, especially if they took the lead and game hits the last 15 minutes, that panic nearly cost us at Carlisle on sat, its whether Chelts have players who can hold their nerve, but I have feeling it'll be a draw and that should be that for them, unless they could grab a 2 goal lead first half.

Mansfield Vs Tranmere - I think I'd rather a Mansfield win because Tranmere would then need 2 wins out of 3 to catch us and 2 of them games are tough and their morale would be gone, but I have a feeling Tranmere may win this, Mansfield seem to be collapsing at present.

Hartlepool Vs Accrington - think Accy may grab something but that could be a wild hope, I don't see accy as a side now safe to p*ss about with youth and they could well have a go, but Hartlepool should win this game really, I wonder here if Accys owners may try and get their manager to push hard here because financially it is enormous for Accy to keep Tranmere and Carlisle in the league, probably their 2 biggest pay-days.

Would've thought Bury are Accrington's biggest current payday...

both Carlisle and Tranmere if doing well can take 2-3,000 to accy, they will take 1,000 odd when playing horrendous crap and with no one wanting to go. your probably right Bury for this season due to them doing well, but I think us and Tranmere could take more.

plus you can argue Bury may well also be gone next season, if Accy were to lose Carlisle, Tranmere and Bury I'd guess that could be financially and utter disaster for them.

Bury and Luton are everyone's biggest payday. These types of clubs attract the people who maybe pick and choose 1 game a season to attend.

Not for me. I hate it. I'd much rather be able to go to matches with nothing to play for, enjoying life.

Get the feeling we could be taking a good number on the last day.,

We took about 700 there last season which I thought was a decent following.

As for tonight.

Best case scenario - we win, hartlepool drop points - we are basically safe.
Acceptable scenario - we draw, stay 6 clear of tranmere - Hartlepool win or draw, leaving Tranmere right in it.
Worsr case scenario - we lose, Hartlepool win - we are only 2 and 3 points ahead of those 2.

I'm with BigDave in a perverse kind of way. Part of following a club is all this looking at where you are in the division, and how other games affect you and actually being bothered about gaining a point or two on the teams below you. It's not nice that the thing we're trying to avoid is relegation but it's enjoyable having something to play for.

Clearly though most United fans don't feel the same, or we'd be getting attendances of 9-10k

I disagree, most feel exactly the same as me.

the start of our downfall was the very moment Abbott turned us into a bland midtable side with nothing at all to play for and our fans pretty much detested it with a passion en masse.

but I do come from a view that its 'just another league' and conference doesn't worry me like most, so I can see why people would rather not be involved in relegation scraps in this league.

Perhaps in God's own Country, north of the Irwell and west of the Pennines. Bury would probably be in the bottom third of interest for us, lower if we hadn't played them in the cup last season.

Bury being promoted this season could have a huge impact on the financial well-being of the entire division. It'd be like it was for the SPL when Rangers were demoted.

Don't get me wrong Dave and shoddy I'd love to be in a promotion race, but relegation out of the football league is a matter of life or death (for the club). Id rather not live on the edge like this, I'd rather be safe with 6 games to go, so I can go to away games and enjoy the day no matter what the result.

One of my favourite away days was Rochdale a few years ago. We were safe and secure in mid table, nothing to play for, they were going for L1 playoffs, it was a red hot sunny day, and we just went for it that day, nothing to lose or gain and what an entertaining match it was. Great goals from Noble and Robson and a good 2-3 win.

A mate of mine only comes to the big games. He came to our cup game v arsenal in 2001, he came to everton away in 2010, he came to spurs at home in 2012, and then he came to bury at home this season.

He only comes to games when the opposition are full of household names. He's a plastic fan but hey what can you do?

Can't blame them. ;)

Yep, just without the question marks about the ownership of the club. Oh.

I can see from an individual Carlisle fan's narrowish perspective, especially if you didn't do many away matches, it may feel like "just another league". It isn't, it's significantly worse in relative terms than dropping out of or getting back into the Premiership. I think most York and especially Mansfield fans would agree. That's why there was near panic on our messageboard through March into April.

1) Carlisle just dipped their toes in the water 10 years ago, so didn't feel the full impact - and it has got worse.
2) The financial impact is enough to take some clubs (Mansfield?) to the wall and can result in loss of ground ownership, youth system and/or a gathering of vulture property developers or chancers. It runs into millions from TV money, sponsorship, youth funding, gates, etc.
3) The novelty of away trips to new grounds soon wears off when you have to go to places like Braintree, Alfreton and Tamworth instead of Portsmouth, Southend and Tranmere (oh yes...).
4) 2 up 2 down can make it a very long sentence if you haven't got your act together before going down.

I'm planning another trip to Brunton Park next season but I'm hoping, for your collective sakes that it's for a U's match not a local derby with Barrow. Having said all that, I still think that it will be Hartlepool and Cheltenham that will be down and on a slide. I hope Mark Pallios has deep pockets and reserves of patience if Tranmere have to go through the Luton experience.

The conference is a killer, I think our chairman stated if we had stayed down much longer we could be going part time.
The tv money alone makes a huge difference when a league club. On top of that it's now incredibly difficult to get back out of as shown by ourselves and Mansfield who took years, even Luton struggled with theiw crowds, Wrexham, Lincoln, Stockport,Hereford, are still none league and continuing to go backwards.

I don't think hartlepool or tranmere fans have any idea what the conference is like - hopefully one of them will be going down.

It's hell, I think that has got the Mansfield fans so worried.
