Because they have a mortgage and family settled in an area are two pretty good reasons

Footballers will generally move wherever the work is, no? Plenty of time to put down roots once you're retired.

I do quite like the idea that Cheshire and North Wales are some sort of hellscapes that people don't want to live in.

Has Morais figured for you guys yet? He was injured when you signed him wasn't he? Always looked a good player I thought.
He's come off the bench twice last season and that's it. Didn't even make the bench in Saturday but I think he's going to be getting some minutes pretty soon.
Looked a proper livewire playing against us last season. I think he wants the ball played early and we don't do much of that which doesn't help him.

Not the point I was making around Wales or Cheshire. It's more about money not being the sole motivation to move somewhere

We are lucky Matty Palmer doesn't like leaving the Midlands for example

Joe White in on loan from Newcastle is our next one. Don't know much about him except he's a midfielder who has had loan spells with Hartlepool and Exeter.
Joe White is an odd one. He’s very talented and skilful but games seemed to pass him by a bit. Thinks he’s a bit lightweight and if he bulks up a tad, he’d be a player.

He had one of the best 20 minute cameos on his debut last season where he took the piss out of FGR, but after that just faded.

I don't think anyone was saying that really, but I liked the implication.

Geography is important for some players for sure, but it's far from the norm. That said moving back to the NW was a big factor for us landing Mullin, he had an infant son living on the Wirral.

Jack Payne signing for MK Dons for the season is a great signing.

Anything other than the title by 10 points is abject failure for them.

Many footballers have young families... Once you have one you realise that moving them is hard

Even if you could get 4k a week without moving?

The other factors come into play. Are you seriously arguing that most footballers don't happily move around the country? On a long enough and good enough contract most players will play anywhere.

Contract length is another good decision factor

You can look at some careers and yeah they go everywhere. Then there are others that for example stick to London

I don't think every footballer is mercenary at this level

Don’t a lot of footballers keep their families in one place, and then get a flat/commute to their clubs?

It's not mercenary to move to further your career. Footballers have ten/fifteen years earning potential at most. We've got several players who relocated with their families, others who commute from the midlands/Manchester/Liverpool, others still whose families are settled at the other end of the country and they stay in digs.

Some players do stay in one area their whole career but they aren't the norm and probably haven't been for decades.

With how our squad is right now I’d still be ecstatic doing what we did in 18/19 and sneaking into the top 3 on the final day. But that’s solely because we hate the play offs. We’re probably top 7 worthy at the moment but if injuries happen we’re screwed.

Rumour our end is we’re trying to bring in Charlie McNeill from Man United, any views from Newport?

Let's hope Payne doesn't decide to switch off for half a season for you like he did us.

Absolute waste of talent that lad, shouldnt be in L2. Career has passed him by.

Lot of huff and puff and charging around but very little quality on the the ball sadly, absolutely should be in L2.

Still can’t get over us paying £13k per week for him in L1.

Very tidy player on his day, mind.

10 years on £2,000 a week is equal to 50 years on £400 a week. Footballers do not starve and they are not incapable of working after they retire.

Are you being willfully thick?

Also who is working for 400 quid a week for 50 years?

I’d much rather Dan Kemp than Payne, Payne was good for us for half a season but that’s years ago and can only imagine he’s got worse since then. Can only imagine something is wrong behind the scenes like us with Jake Young. Because that piece of business makes no sense.

Footballers are not horses, although a fair number are donkeys, and can do other jobs once they finish playing. They do not have a 10 to 15 year working life. They can work until they are 66+ like the rest of us have to. They do not need to earn enough to support them until they die of old age, unless they are too stupid to clean a toilet.

Thats not the point I was making though. They aren't going to be earning the same level of wages post football in many cases - and lower league pros probably won't earn enough that they don't have to work after retirement. But while they still can earn a good wedge a lot of them are going to move around the country to do that - the UK is small, for the most part you can get around to almost anywhere else in a few hours.

Barely. Think he was our contingency for Langstaff being sold which obviously hasn’t happened. Would probably have been loaned back to the Vanarama if Scott hadn’t got injured, but reckon he gets a chance now.

As others have said, we desperately need an orthodox midfielder in. Palmer and Bostock is as good as you’ll get at this level but there’s nothing to cover them apart from O’Brien who is really only a 20 minute impact player these days.

Yeah hence why his career has passed him by.

Wasted talent. He had lots of quality on ball when he was with us 5/6 years ago in L1 but seems he's let it go to waste.

No argument with that.

But the performance level with pre-December and post-December just want acceptable.

Apparently the hold up with Hanlan signing is Wycombe won't sign the move off until Ikpeazu has passed a medical to sign for them.

180k with add ons rising to 210k if all add ons come in. Better then the reported 400k but still too much for a striker with that scoring record in my opinion
