Being our best central defender is like having the biggest micro penis. Hughes had him in a passing system which he couldn’t do, his family were all rugby league players which is definitely more his style, if he got close to marking anyone maybe yeah he could be a defender who ‘heads it away’. Byrne sounds just as limited but we need new faces at the back, ideally ones who can defend.

That's true about Mellish and Neal but for L2 they should be fine.

Are there any other players in our squad who you would say are worth starting?

Armstrong if he can find his Harrogate form.
Hayden if he’s fit.
I think there’s a player in Vela as well.

Jury is still out on Harry Lewis. I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt due to the shit he had protecting him.

So that’s 4 or 5 who could start including Guy (depending when he returns from his ACL).

We need a fair few first team ready signings that’s for sure.

Can't believe Nevs gone Gillingham, no disrespect to the Gills as I know ow they can pay more than us, but I was sure he would go league 1 and didn't see him moving down south.

You've got a cracking player though who will give 110% and as long as your fans and manager are patient with him he will score goals.

Was just coming to say this. Yes, Platt has been our best defender but that ain't really saying much.

He also doesn't seem bothered either. Plays and isn't fussed whether you win, lose or draw. Reasonable defender but more than replaceable.

Gutted that Nevitt has gone to another League One club. He was supposedly quite close to agreeing a new contract with us a few weeks ago but held out to the summer and Gills have offered him more money than Shrewsbury, so they're definitely Going For It. I'm glad it's done early but a striker is now number 1 priority for us, as even if Long and CBR re-sign, neither is durable enough.

Think Stubbs is a much better defender imo. Just a shame about his paper knees.

Stubbs is a better defender and has a far superior reading of the game. But he's made of glass and has the pace of an 80 year old.

Now he does sound like a Notts defensive signing.

My first reaction about Platt from Bradford was ‘the Bradford we stuck 7 goals past?’ but thankfully he only played in the second half at ML.

Played in the passing team at Barrow must mean he’s not that useless with his feet?

Platt is a big loss. For some reason there's a section of our fanbase that don't like him but he's comfortably our best defender and has been pretty consistent in his time here. We are weaker with him leaving that's for sure.
How do you know we will be weaker once the season kicks off after the summer recruitment.

I'm personally not bothered either way. He was a steady centre half for sure, but I'm sure we can recruit even better

Add Gillingham to the Going For It list? They've been on it for 18 months now.

Always thought Nevitt was a lively pest when I've seen but not sure he's a top stirker at this level. But Crewe fans will have seen more than me.

Dreadful with his feet.

That Shrewsbury offer for Nevitt was a very good one too. I dread to think what Gillingham are paying him...

Good luck to the lad. At his age I'd be chasing the coin too. A very good move for him financially and I wish him all the best after an excellent season here this year. A real good bloke who always gave 100% for us.

On the flipside, I never expected him to move away from the area so it was obviously an excellent offer. He wasn't necessarily a high earner here too but at his age with his stock high I can see why he's made the move. Still, was his one good season last year a sign of things to come or a flash in the pan? Because when Nev first signed for us he genuinely couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo and he wouldn't have had the patience and chances afforded to him by most clubs that he had with us. What happens to him if he goes on a long drought at Gillingham next season? It's entirely feasible.

He needs to play at a place he's loved to get the best out of him. I just hope Gillingham can be that place for him (the 2 games against us next season apart of course) cos, as I said previously, he's an excellent bloke.

Major overhaul for us up front this Summer then. But an overhaul we urgently need!

Cotterill will have seen a lot of them last season I'd imagine, sound like they should be good at National League level. Sort of experienced players he usually likes building his teams around. On paper better then any signing we made in L1, never mind after dropping back to L2.
Both are League 1 quality players.

Sercs I can understand - he's 34, one last payday before retirement. It makes sense.

Longy hurts though. I don't care about the rivalry - as we've discussed too many times - but he's League 1 standard and on leaving us should have done so to stay in League 1. I don't blame any player for taking the money, but I had a lot of love for Longy. His signed matchworn shirt is on my son's wall. He should have stayed and become a legend. Now, in a lot of fans' eyes, his legacy is tarnished.

Stubbs could barely move when we had him on loan as a kid, must’ve been the slowest 19 year old in the country.

We had him round a similar time too and I thought he was absolutely crap. God knows how he's still turning out in the league. Not a patch on his old man that's for sure!

Hope you've got room in the budget for seat replacements in row Z with the amount of times he hits the ball out.

He's a bit of a late developer (was still in non league 3 years ago) but he's improved so much in the last 18 months since joining us. He had a very good season for us and wasn't even a guaranteed starter until the season was already a few months old. Could keep getting better if he continues to get quality coaching.

Regarding Platt, I was honestly suprised to see us offer him a new deal. He’s solid enough but not the defender you want starting game in, game out.

This is why I think he’s left, because we couldn’t promise him the game time - he was always going to be back-up.

Anyone who has promotion aspirations needs to sign better than Matty Platt.

Can't you re write that last sentence as anyone with promotion aspirations shouldn't be signing players from Bradford

I like Platt, but didn't expect him to go to Notts considering he can't pass. One of those defenders who'd be better if you cut his feet off and replaced them with two heads.

Weaker in defence now if Byrne is a starter.
I'd take a bit less football in suicidal positions if Matt Platt can cut down the ridiculously soft goals conceded.
We literally gifted 25 soft goals and 17 penalties last season.

Why? Because of the worst rivalry of all time. El Glosico? Hahahaha

I very much like the sound of Nevitt, my god we need goals after a 3 season drought, so he will be given time by the fans. Sounds like an excellent first signing of the summer window to me.

Yep. I think it's telling that all three automatic promotion winners had managers with multiple seasons and steady progression under their belts at their respective clubs. The Mansfield case is quite an interesting one having failed at chucking money at it and then stripped it back, got Clough in and built it back up. Say what you will about the Radfords but they've now gone from doing a good job to having done an excellent job. Even more impressive bouncing back from a playoff final defeat two seasons before.

Odd comment initially then, especially when you consider how absolutely piss weak 8th down to 24th was in League 2 last season. The top three last season were probably the strongest three I remember going up in the autos but pretty much the rest of the division was crap really.

If you think that's an odd comment you are going to be in for a treat next season. It was tongue in cheek, and not serious. It's May far too early to be serious.

Outside of the Top 8 in L2 should be pretty piss weak, it's the 4th tier for a reason. Let's be honest the strength of the Top 3 is almost all that matters.
