I can see him either playing alongside Bailey or being his back up, there to brake up play and win the ball back, we’ve got Close, Sbarra, Gibson, Hurst, Westbrooke and Molyneux for the technical stuff
He doesn't really win the ball that much to be honest. His physical attributes are all about miles and stamina, not strength. He carries the ball well but he also gets bundled off it a fair bit both when he's on it and when he's tussling for it. The most effective football he's played for us has been out wide in the front three of a 433 but switching into midfield when we're on the backfoot and allowing us to change shape/formation. He's a great player to have when you're protecting a lead or trying to grind out a 1-0 win from the start and you'd think he'd be a half decent defensive midfielder but he's not really, partly on account of fairly poor passing range. He's less likely to make errors out wide.

He’s not good enough to play in central midfield and certainly not pacy enough to get up and down. He’s a lot better out wide where’s less pressure to consistently produce or at fullback where he’s relatively solid.

If you play 4-3-3, then Clifton will be a candidate for a role in the middle 3. Nowhere else imo. Can get up and down the pitch
I disagree. I think he's been pretty poor in a midfield three for ages now. Predominantly played out wide in the NL season and his best performances in 22/23 were generally out wide too. He's had decent matches when he's played in an AMC role, but most of his best performances over the past three seasons have been out wide for me. Doesn't affect games enough when he's in the middle of the park. Stick him out wide though and he'll get to the byline and into the box consistently and still get back and cover for an attacking full back.

Don't get us wrong, he's a great squad player for any L2 club. He's just not a starting CM every week. Worth noting he's ran the Notts and Stockport midfields off the park on multiple occasions over the past few seasons.

I can't remember him tbh. I remember that Holohan used to play quite well against us.

Did he play in the drubbing we gave you at Blundell Park in February?

He did. He's played in all six league matches against you in the last three seasons. Scored against you in the drubbing we gave you at Edgeley Park in 22/23.

You played well in that one tbf. Paul Hurst masterclass. Holohan definitley scored in that too, bogey player. Looks like you let him go too. Artell needs to hit the ground running next season, I can see their being a few voices of discontent at BP if you get off to a poor start.

The difficulty with players like this is that fans often confuse workrate with being good. Our fans will treat anyone who runs around a lot, irrespective of ability, a hero. We've had players with more superior ability be vilified because they don't run around like headless chickens. With the notable exception of Ryan Loft, who does run about a lot but is absolutely wank.

Yeah Holohan quite similar to Clifton in that he wasn't technically good enough. Better than Clifton in that regard but still sloppy with possession too often. Had the ability to grab a game by the scruff of the neck though and like Clifton would run and run. That was one of the main problems with trying to play Artellball from the get go. The midfielders just weren't up to it. In a Hurst team that is chasing everything and winning second balls it's what you need but never gonna work with what Artell tried to do initially. That was way more of an issue than playing out from the back, despite the fact that it looked that way in that shambolic performance against you lot in Feb.

So he can raise his game when he wants to, which is worth noting.

He's not rubbish, he's also not amazing, not going to always get the crowd going, but also not going to be the one blamed for losing games or for having bad games either, he's a standard league 2 player, and an excellent squad player as he can pretty much cover in any position.

He genuinely will run forever, however like I already said it remains to be seen how much of that running he put in was because he was playing for his home club, and a fan like the rest of us. Will he run as hard and as long for Donny as he did for us?

Think I already said in the get rid thread that if it was between keeping Green or Clifton, I'd rather Clifton purely for his versatility and work rate.

Quite a strong rumour we’re interested in a few players. Which ones we don’t know yet, but coming from reliable sources.

Can tell it's the end of the season with essays being written on a player as average as Harry Clifton

As long as it's a goalkeeper, by that I mean a person who keeps goal, not a sweeper keeper league 2 level it's not pointless.
But best will in the world, unless names are mentioned, every club in the land can have 'hope we get x position' rumours.

We scored 8 goals in 2 matches against them last season which is some going considering our midfield had been run off the park by him

I wish you’d stop sitting on the fence and just say whether you like Artell or not?

Rovers linked with two players north of the border, who I hadn't heard of.
Cameron Harper left-back, played a number of times for Inverness and is a 6 footer Adkins highlighted our shortarse squad as being a problem at times last season, should provide some competition for Wood if he joins.
Finlay Robertson midfielder from Dundee. Sill under contract and doesn't seem to have played much, In an area where we need quality competition for starting places, doesn't look more than a squad player.

Yep he was shite at BP this season to be fair, a prime example of why he should never sit in front of a back four as a DMC. However, it was widely reported that during the half time break in extra time of our playoff match in 21/22 while the Notts midfield were pasing their inhalers around, Ben Fox and Clifton were seen checking Google Maps to plan their post-match run back to Cleethorpes.

I am sure there are exceptions, but the general standard of lower level SPL, and Scottish Championship players is NL at best
