The Maynard to Mansfield signing video is the one that always springs to mind. That was basically a vanity video so that Carolyn Radford got to show off her vast wealth for 60 seconds.

I'm fairly old school/boring when it comes to announcements. Put a teaser up 5 minutes before and then announce the Fecker. With that said, some of the announcements can be very creative, and at the end of the day it's to get clicks isn't it?

Particularly when the signing is pretty meh. It's very non league - although not as Non League as the Torquay approach of announcing a dozen players you've never hear of on the same day.
Keith Alexander loved to do that in his spell here in the early to mid noughties, I'm pretty sure we announced 15 signings on the 1st July one year.

Honestly find that less tragic than this new trend of Twitter accounts doing a 4 hour build up for every single signing.
Just the 4 hours eh, lucky people.

Can't say it isn't tinpot but engagement with the local community is what makes lower league football so much better than the Prem

100%. The best thing is going around your local area and seeing kids in replica kits for their local club not some Premier league or big European team.

I’d not lose any sleep over losing any of them apart from Chis and Garrity, that said I do think Ripley is a decent keeper and letting him go risks trying to find a steady number 1 which hasn’t been our strong point even through the promotion season since Brown left.

Smith would sting a bit maybe as one of our youth products and can’t be too far from a testimonial year but it was a mistake giving him the captaincy, it didn’t work before when he had it and his performance levels dropped, plus he is the only real dark arts master we have!

If they stay will be interesting to see how say Grant and Sang do at a lower level hopefully in a more successful side. Grant certainly has the calibre to be very good but for whatever reason we didn’t see it last season.
I thought Ripley was good for the first 2 or 3 months but then tailed off badly. He's also been relegated in consecutive seasons. The trouble is that we've been so use to having goalkeepers where there's been literally zero thought put into how good they are, and very little investment, that when one comes along who can actually make the odd save then we think that there's no one else out there. It wouldn't be a disaster if he left to be honest.

Grant should be good. You can tell he's got some ability but he's got no pace, which is a disaster at wingback.

Smith has been part of a very moderate side for the past 8 years, barring one season where the stars aligned. I think he could do a job in league 2 but it almost feels like a change would do both parties a lot of good. His positional sense has always been poor and it was exposed pretty badly at times last season. I think a complete change in defence without Smith as a first choice might be good for all.

For what it’s worth he looked half decent against us at our place in league 1 last season.
On the other side of the coin, he was dreadful against us.

Seemed to start like a train at Cambridge, but tailed off massively and apparently seemed to play like he really didn't give a shite.

I'm not sure what to think about this one. He was great for us first time around but it's six years since he left us and he's now 34.
Not for me. He's done next to nothing for the last couple of seasons. You have to base it on what he's done recently not what he did for us 7 or 8 year's ago.

Pleased for Clifton but also pleased to see him leave. He needed it for his own career and I think I needed it for my own sanity at times.

He’s the fittest player we’ve had in years, works his bollocks off and obviously really cares. The issue is he doesn’t fit in anywhere, he’s not a CM, he’s certainly not a winger but he MIGHT be a wing back (that’s his best position for me). For all his hard work he’s technically poor and is so often the most frustrating player on the pitch.

Wish him well though, but it’s best for all parties.

Probably about the right time for him to move on, he's been with us a long time. Would have been happy for him to stay though, he's a typical workhorse that will run forever and can play in almost every position.

Will be interesting to see if he puts in as much effort for a different club or whether he only did it for the club he supports.

I don’t understand a lot of our fans reaction on Twitter to this, I get it that he’s a great lad and homegrown been here 10 years etc but he was garbage for all of last season and I’m not just saying that because he’s left I’ve said it all season, most of us were shocked that he even got offered another deal here and I’m shocked that he’s got himself a club with serious promotion aspirations like Donny after the season he’s just had.
But I genuinely wish him well, always puts the effort in and I hope it works out for him there.

Think it’s a mistake allowing him to go. A L2 James Milner if you will. He had a stinker of a season but it’s easy to forget how good he was the season before. Unlike Lew, I thought he looked best on the wing as he was unpredictable but that might have been down to his lack of technical ability. Also not the quickest.

I’m sure we’ll sign a better footballer but it’s going to be hard to replace his effort and commitment.

I don’t think “most” Grimsby fans were shocked Clifton was offered a new deal.
Local lad playing for his home Town club is what most of us can only dream of.
Harry will run all day, one of the fittest and most dedicated pro’s around. Told he had spoken with Bradford and Mansfield.
Always available which is vital for managers.

Down sides are where do you play him? Runs about, but in central midfield doesn’t influence the game enough, technically very hit and miss, 3 league goals last season, not a great passer and little vision of what is around him.

Donny most definitely Going For It™ now. Sad to see Harry go as we've been through a lot together as supporters and shared some great memories but I think now is the right time. He's a player that is most definitely not without his flaws and limitations but we're losing a player with one of the best engines in the entire Football League. We need technically better players though so this kind of works for us. I was a bit concerned that we'd offered him and Green deals but him leaving this negates that so hopefully we'll get some in who is a bit more skillfully adept. What Donny have got though is a player who will run through brick walls for the cause.

Better hope you're playing 3 at the back then otherwise he'll be a liability.

I can see him either playing alongside Bailey or being his back up, there to brake up play and win the ball back, we’ve got Close, Sbarra, Gibson, Hurst, Westbrooke and Molyneux for the technical stuff

Surely he played in a back 4 for Cookie at Wigan?

Maybe so.

Just think he was only decent in a back three at Shrewsbury. Sure their fans may offer a more informed opinion though.

He should be a upgrade on Ty Williams and Ash Palmer in either case, considering where he's played his football
