We’ve signed Joel Cotterill from Swansea. No idea.
We didn’t see much of him at all and that was despite us having huge injury problems in midfield.

His uncle came on our forum telling us how lucky we were to have him when he signed him. He was told how deluded he was and how he’d be a squad player and usually teenagers out on their first loans make very little impact and so it proved.

Jack Shepard, centre half from Barnsley confirmed season long loan. Feel like we’re going with quantity over quality in that position, plenty of 6/10’s but little more.

We should be signing James Connolly on loan from Bristol Rovers. Any thoughts, Morecambe fans? Apparently, we were going to sign him on on a permanent deal but Rovers changed their minds about that.

In other news, we're open to letting Ryan Cooney leave if we can find anyone to pay his wages.
Seen on twitter he's expected to sign a two year permanent deal.

As for Cooney, I don't mind keeping hold of him as a squad option but not as a week in week out starter.

We appear to have Jacob Wakeling training with us at the moment. Might be looking at bringing in a short term loan deal up front as Nevitt and Andrews are currently both injured.

Right back sorted, released by Peterborough at the end of last season. We’ve had him on trial with us for most of pre season and definitely looks like he’s got something, powerful & athletic.
I am slightly surprised by this. I assumed we'd got ring of King to make way for a known quantity with league experience. Maybe someone Cook knows and has worked with before. This guy could be mint, but it's a risky one considering he's basically never played yet. Maybe he's just like a quarter of the price. Our coaching staff are usually good judges of ability to be fair though so it could be they've seen something, they don't get too many wrong.

He’s got good pedigree in terms of where he’s come from. Arsenal’s academy up until he was 18, then moved onto Leicester’s U23s, & then Cardiff / Peterborough after that. Has represented England at U18s and U19s too. Has openly admitted he hasn’t kicked on in the men’s game yet, but fingers crossed there’s some motivation there for him to do it with us.

We all know Cook loves a rough diamond with something to prove (Dobra, Berry, Drummond etc…), so hopefully we’ll see him flourish and do well for us. His age and potential ceiling will have something to do with it as well when you compare him to King. Definitely a risk, but one probably worth taking as I can’t imagine he’ll be anything but one of the lower earners in the squad.

A trialist on a one year deal as your first choice right back certainly isn’t big gun promotion contender behaviour

Isn’t being signed as first choice. King wasn’t first choice last year either, barely played.

Yeah I don't mind the profile at all, right age, good education and pedigree. Hopefully it works out.

Honestly I would be surprised if he's not been brought in to be the guy. If not, he's taking a valuable spot in the 22 and doesn't fix our problem. I'm not sure how I'd feel going into L2 with Sheckleford as first choice, and we don't want to see Mandy there again really. I reckon Cook will be hoping he nails the spot.

I can see it being a rotation of Shecks, Daley-Campbell & Mandeville (Less so Mandeville as he’s better further forward but I still think he’ll feature there at times) throughout the season to be honest, similar to last year where we never really had a first choice full back on either side. Cook loves a bit of rotation doesn’t he to keep the squad happy and keep competition amongst the squad high.

Obviously with Sheckleford being injured at the moment that opens the door for Daley-Campbell to stake his claim at being the more regular starter right from the beginning. Let’s see how he gets on.

Tranmere have signed Zak Bradshaw from us on loan.

He's not actually played for us yet, we signed him on a free from Ipswich in January and went straight out on loan to the LOI. I think he's a LCB/LB but no-one will be able to tell you anything about him but getting a L2 loan is a fairly high starting point for a season long loan.

James Connolly confirmed on a 2 year deal. 1 more permanent to come according to Bell, LB, LW, CM and ST all look like potential areas to strengthen, as we're lacking a fit LB, fit LW, all our CMs have injury concerns from last season and we have 1 fit striker until Omar Bogle returns. Curious to see where Bell goes with his last bit of money.

Also curious to see if the club will then dip into the loan market and fill up those final 3 slots allowed.

How's your squad compared to last year? A likely repeat on the cards ie playoff contention? Bogle should get 10-15 which is always useful and I recall you having a couple of tidy midfielders last year.

Like a lot of teams I suspect, it's hard to say. If the new signings all pan out and the youngsters take a step, then we'll challenge for the top 7. But if they don't and injuries hit, we'll be mid-table.

Not sure that's nailed on, has only managed that once since we sold him to Wigan back in Jan 2017. Admittedly though, that was in the one season he played most matches at this level.

Suggestion in various places that we're on the verge of announcing the loan signing of Wakeling from Posh, with Ashley Nadesan going out to Sutton on loan at the same time. Both would make sense.

Wakeling now confirmed, season long loan deal.

That's my concern. Glass half full is he stays fit for 35+ games, scored 15-20 goals and we're laughing.

Glass half empty is he struggles for fitness as he has done for most of his career and barely gets past 5. Think way too many of our fans are dismissing the latter as a real possibility.

Without looking at his injury record, I'm not even sure if it's entirely about fitness to be honest. I think it's partly that but I also think he's made some bad choices transfers wise. When we sold him to Wigan for example, he was absolutely flying (19 goals before the end of Jan) and I think if he'd have gone to a top end L1 club he'd have really kicked on. Instead he went to a side firmly in a Championship relegation battle and struggled and then when they went down he kicked his toys out the pram about not being in the second tier and forced a move to Cardiff where he again struggled and then just sort of bumbled around loan moves before failing to impress at Donny. I genuinely thought he was gonna be done before he went to Newport. He's a real oddity as a player in terms of record, as that season he banged them in for Newport really came out of nowhere, in my opinion. He's a classic case of a player that needs to be man managed well and I don't think he has really by that many of the managers he's had. If he's fit and not in a grump and you're playing to his strengths then I think he'll be an asset but there are quite a lot of ifs and buts to navigate. I think the main positive for Crewe when you look at his career, is that he is currently at a point whereby he looks to have rescued his career. He's not hitting the heights that you'd have expected when you look at how good he was for us but I think there is plenty of credit due for not just tossing it off and for knuckling down at Newport. Seems to suggest that he's over that earlier career petulance that threatened to define him.
