A few people have put 2 and 2 together from the comments of the ITK guy on Outlaws ("Played in the Prem. Can play in 2 pos. Top signing.") and concluded that it will be Collison, but there is nothing beyond guesswork behind that conclusion.

I wouldn't discount the possibility of course. Still did comment a few months ago that he was aware of the player and would like him here. But I also assume that Potts is more likely (the timing fits as he was formally released by West Ham yesterday afternoon). We'll see I guess.

I'm almost certain it won't be Jack Collison.

Signed Dan Potts from West Ham United as expected. Good signing for us.

Ffs that's going to be a bother having another Potts in the league. It's bad enough that everyone calls our Steven Rigg 'Sean Rigg'.

O'Hanlon is a fantastic signing for the Conference North. Some of our fans (myself included) wanted to see him stay, as in the second half of last season he was one of our better players. Always 100% committed.
Fantastic signing yeah, but it was the correct decision to release him.

The defence needs a complete rebuild.

Carlisle fans, is Sean O'Hanlon any good? I suspect you'll say no as League Two to Conference North is quite a big drop, but apparently he was captain last year?
He'll be excellent at CN level. He wasn't captain last season, he may have taken the armband on a couple of occasions during his time with us, but that's it.

Probably so, but I think he'd have been sufficient cover. We've signed Raynes, who isn't particularly rated by anyone, and I presume he'll be a first team player, so it still remains to be seen whether the defence actually improves. You'd like to think Curle is able to create a solid defence though.

Some fans starting to fall into the trap of thinking early business is good business.

Well it's definitely better than some of the late signings we habitually made before every season, especially before 2012/13.

Yep, it has been confirmed for us. He has signed on a one year contract, i am quite happy with the Signing as i think he could be a real asset in this league.

Manage him well and you will get the best out of him. Getting on a bit, he can't do 2 in a week and he can be injury prone - So he has to be managed well.
He will get a standing ovation on his return to Brisbane Road next season

As I thought. We won't be signing Jack Collison, he's joined Peterborough.

I don't think it matters when deals happen, but its nice to have some good players signed up early instead of risking the waiting game. Good signings are good signings whenever they're made, but they're less likely to be available later in summer.

I wouldn't agree with that, there's the argument that better players have more bargaining power and can afford to wait for better offers. There's probably loads of players lying by a pool in Marbs for 2 weeks with offers from 3/4 clubs already and no real intention of signing anything yet, especially as contracts run till 30th of June in a lot of cases.

There's good signings available later in the summer but at the same time there'll be plenty of players who'd rather go into their holiday with a secure contract instead of just offers of contracts which could potentially be withdrawn - especially the lower down the leagues you go. You might be able to find some decent players at the end of the transfer window when they realise you're the best they'll get, but I don't think there's anything to suggest that waiting until later on provides better signings.

What really matters is getting the players your manager has set his sights on, not when the deal's concluded. So, in a nutshell, a club has done good business if it gets 5 out of 7 targets, bad business if only one of those potential targets signs.

That's assuming a club has a policy as focused as this, which unfortunately a lot don't...*turns head swiftly and glares at Shaun Derry*

Amen to this post! Lower down you go the more likely it is players will sign earlier, I think. For instance the 3 we've signed have all said in their interviews they wanted things done early. Cuthbert even said "like most players" - so I take his word for that. There's good business to be done always (we signed Nathan Doyle in September) but you can also be left with what no one else wants come August 30th.

Basically there is no real formula, and therefore no debate, as there is no right answer!

That player you've heard of? Yeah, Luton might or might not sign them. Let us discuss that.

I will now he's cleverly run off to pastures new. Plus, I firmly blame those above him for our current situation, not that Rodwell's record at Notts is anything to be proud of. But at least he represented League One well on the Football League Board. Brilliant.

Our local journo has followed Jason Banton on Twitter tonight, which he generally does a day or two before we sign someone (i.e. when it's a done deal and is just being finalised).

That's the norm though, half hope he's just playing around because he knows everyone knows he does it.

In other words, we may or may not be signing Jason Banton. I feel like a Luton fan now.

Is he Championship quality? Luton always make a signing of that calibre in the summer.
