No, you're right, he isn't that good. In the right system though (ie, back 3/5) with enough protection he'll be a serviceable enough CB. Whether he's good enough for champions elect possibles MKDons is another matter. Pleased for the lad to get paid though, good professional
I never rated Maguire. I always felt too small for a CB, and too slow for a full back.

2nd in from left, looks like Ben Knight who’s currently at Man City, not sure whether he’s in on trial or just training with a view to loan. Been on loan at Stockport last season, and Crewe the season before but from wiki limited game time for both?

Anyone know much about him as a player?

Little bit of research shows City signed him from Ipswich academy when he was 16 for £1m in 2018, which will be where the link has come from as we have Kieron Dyer on our coaching staff who would have been at Ipswich at the time.
If by limited game time, you mean he didn't even play for a second here.

He signed on loan in January but we didn't announce it until March as he was injured until then. He didn't get a sniff for us from that point until the end of the season but he was possibly unlucky that some of our more prominent attacking players started getting back from injury and hitting form for the run in.

It would be very Paul Cook to sign an attacking player when the last business we need to get done is a right back and keeper

Very talented but was pretty much always injured and struggled with the physical side of the game

I have a feeling Tyrer will be back. With Pickford being at the Euro’s, Everton won’t want to let him go yet as they’ll need him through pre season training & for some of the games until Pickford is actually back.

That’s a huge spend currently for tier 4. Usually the big spenders do end up in the top 7 but there seems to always be an Accrington, Crawley or Morecambe to go against the trend.
With the cash comes expectation, and if it doesn’t immediately transfer to wins, pressure mounts quickly.

We all know that money is the key although I am not entirely comfortable with ‘investment’ as far too often there are ulterior motives. Why would an American, Far/Middle East consortium for example want to invest in a League 2 football club. There is little hope of any return, only the need to put in more and more cash.

All the clubs need to work towards sustainability imho, but with salaries and backroom staff growing at a huge rate I hold out little hope of it happening
We are losing 1-2 million a season with what is described as a 'mid range budget ' according to Stockwood , granted some of that goes on the ground but it seems a heavy loss for an average or last season worse team .

Some of the bigger spenders losses muat be far beyond that it is a bit crazy really .

Last season we made a profit with player sales. If you take the player sales out we had an operating loss of 1
1.1 million with a budget ranking us about 14/15 in spending table. So yep others must be losing mental amounts.

Budget was around mid way in the league so significantly under achieved. Playing Budget reduced this year but demand by SAG means spend on infrastructure remains high. In a couple of years time the infrastructure spend will reduce and we move closer to sustainability. Smarter recruitment strategy will be the key but time will tell if that works!
All on the back of decent crowds for the level. How the smaller clubs get by on gates of 2-3000 is astonishing

Good to see Alfie Mccalmont shipped off to Australia.

Another one of last seasons losers out the door.

Yeah didn't they have to spend a lot on that main stand work this summer ?

Hopefully there isn't anymore nasty suprises with the ground - love the nostalgia of the place but it must be a right money drain .

L2 has been decimated for strikers. I know it's often the case, but this summer it feels more than most.

35 players hit 10 goals or more last season. By my count only 16 are still with L2 teams at this moment.

Yes a significant amount on the Main Stand ( it does look good tbh) and next summer plenty of work must take place in the ‘Findus’

We’ll have the L2 top scorer - Paul Glatzel.

There. The kiss of death for the young lad!

Joe Piggot returns.

Here's hoping that it's the Joe Pigott who did okayish to well for us rather than the Joe Pigott who failed at Ipswich, Portsmouth and Leyton Orient.

The jury's out on this one.

I’m gonna say here and now before I even see him play that our new Icelandic signing is gonna be the dogs bollocks, some players you just get that vibe from and I’m getting it here.
And then in October when we’re loaning him out to some non league local tinpotters like Spalding or Scunthorpe you can all quote this and take the absolute piss.

He did well for us. Not the best centre half I've ever seen but ok.

I did say that you lot must have some bloody good centre halfs if he couldn't even get in the squad at yours

He couldn’t get a look in at centre back under Cook the previous season for the reason I stated (not dominant enough to play as a CB in a back 4), so Cook moved him to LB to play as a ‘stay at home’ full back, which he did relatively well in. However, anyone who knows anything about a Cook team, knows that flying attacking full backs are a key part of the system, and Maguire just isn’t ever going to be that. That’s why we shipped him off.

I was pleased for him that he did well for you and went on to get promotion, as always wish a product of our youth system well wherever they go.

I see they've signed Luke Hendrie, too. Probably a National League player tbh. It looks really weak does that squad.

Have the Salford owners finally come to the conclusion they’ve been throwing good money after bad? Seem to be losing all their best players and so far not really brought in any adequate replacements. Good move by MK to replace Dean so quickly though.
