Carlsile, York and Ourselves have all offered contracts to Vadaine Oliver. According to the Daily Mirror.

What's he like, Mansfield fans?

Bit meh, can score good goals but he's so clumsy if thats the word... Not great with the ball at his feet and he doesnt win that many headers. tries hard but little comes out of it, overall not a great footballer or striker.... misses a lot of sitters

Pope isn't the power he was, he's been injured a lot and it's taken away from his game.

Green will be as big a risk as Hearn was I would think, he hasn't played a first team game for 18 months. Hopefully he'll recover fully but that's a long time to be out for.

Signing Matt Green when you've already got Liam Hearn would be just utterly moronic.

I hope we don't sign players as shite as these in this thread recently. Maybe Gary Jones wouldn't be terrible after all.

Jamie McGuire has signed a new contract and Mitchell Rose has signed for Mansfield today.

What if we got them fit? :box:

Aye sure, sign Dean Ashton and Ledley King too. You'll piss League 2 if we based the league table on hypothetical thinking.

The chances of getting both Green and Hearn fit for a considerable length of time this season are probably akin to me landing a threesome backstage at a Victoria's Secret show.

Ritchie Sutton confirms his rejection of a new contract offer at Mansfield. He might find his way to another lower League Two club or head back to the Conference. He tends to be a solid performer but I always thought he struggled on the ball.

Very hit and miss, I like him more than most Stags fans. He will always give 100%, sometimes that isn't good enough but he will score goals given enough chances. No striker would look good in our team last season as we just simply didn't create enough opportunities. He scored 7 goals and only started playing in Nov so probably could get double figures over a full season easily, wouldn't be a bad signing.

Re Tom Pope - at 29 years old, he probably hasn't got many seasons left where he can command big wages, even more so if he's got injury problems - probably whoever offers the most money, except Port Vale. He could probably still command £4,000pw.

It's worth remembering that he's only 23, he might be able to improve his game yet.

Got reliably informed today that we want to sign David Ball, who has been released by Fleetwood.

I'd be happy with that.

Apparently that's about what he's on now and Vale want him to take a pay cut of 50%+, which he is unwilling to do even though he's a massive Vale fan. So he's certainly not going to drop down a level for a pittance. Still, with no transfer fee involved those kind of wages wouldn't necessarily be prohibitive to clubs like Pompey, ourselves, or Oxford who seem to be splashing the cash a bit this summer.

Still think he'll stay in League One though.

Wasn't he released because he was already on big wages and wanted a pay rise? Good player though, he'd be a top signing for any team at this level.

For what its worth, Kane Hemmings signed for Dundee today on a 3-year deal. Well, he was half right anyway! :dis:

Wish I was in a position to turn down £104,000 a year for 2 years!

Genuinely have no idea. Just what I was told.

We're a lot better off in this transfer window than we have been in the last 3 or 4 so we should be able to compete but we won't do anything OTT in terms of spending.

Have to wait and see. Even if we can't get him I would like to see us sign a striker with at least some sort of recent scoring record.

11 year old Charlie Patino, dubbed a "wonderkid" by the media has signed for Arsenal from Luton's Academy for a whopping £10,000, despite Chelsea offering double! Oooh, they're really splashing the cash this summer!

What a great initiative the EPPP is! Thank you Premier League for blackmailing clubs into accepting the policy.

On the flip side, Paul Driver our youth coach has said in the past that every kid that was sold by his previous club Rushden & Diamonds came back anyway. One instance, a player called David Moli signed for Liverpool as a 16-year old a few seasons back. Went to Wolves and played a part in the PL Reserve League; released by them and floating around the lower non leagues.

Don't we all! Although in fairness, most people's productive careers don't end at 33-35 like footballers, many of whom will exit the game with little or no qualifications or professional skills. You can't blame them for trying to get as much bank as possible before that happens.

How can you know a kid is a wonderkid at the age of 11?

Exactly

Still don't think it's right though. I mean £10,000 for a fucking 11 year old? Why? Let him enjoy his football at his local club for christ sake.

Yeah it's absolutely crazy.

Also from a club perspective, it makes you wonder what the benefits are of maintaining a comprehensive youth set-up. Unless he goes on to break into the first team we'll make bugger all return on the investment, and even if he does that will be 7-10 years down the line. Any players with real potential get snapped up before the come even close to first team age, the ones that are left are the ones who probably aren't going to make it, so why bother?

There's a guy who posts on Outlaws who works with our youth set-up, and he has suggested before that it would be more cost effective for us to basically scrap the youth system below u-16s or something, as at that age we can offer pro terms and guarantee real financial returns on the players. Put the money saved by scrapping the younger levels into hoovering up 18-21 year olds being released from Premiership academies, some are bound to have ability to develop into a salable asset still.

Depressing way to look at it as that would deny hundreds of local kids opportunities to get into the sport, but it does make sense with the system as it is now.

Playing with better players and working with better coaches is probably better for the player at that age anyway.
