Looks like we are after Jordan Lyden from Villa. Defensive midfielder from their U23’s.

He has scored about 3 in his last 60 odd games, nearly as bad as Berahino.
Barnett is a spent force, absolutely astonished he has stayed in League football.

It's amazing what a bit of desperation can do for you. Judging by Russ Milton's interview, we've been interested for some time (so when Gary Johnson was in charge), I assume the delay has been surrounding his wage.

I will never write a player off before he's kicked a ball for us, we all know players who have been brilliant for our teams and useless elsewhere, but I'm also not expecting fireworks.

Two more players (striker and a left-back) set to sign before the window closes tomorrow.

To be fair Si you are right, he can only try and prove himself and get back to what he was .
I actually said I wouldn't have Pope back if Bury drove him down, good judge I am !!

Think unless you got cash to throw at players then we all need reality checks.
We have had players freed by Stevenage sign for us and we jump all over it, yet Stevenage finished above us .

If you can get somebody else's cast off and they come good then it's good business for you.
It just never happened for him at Vale but he never seemed to actually bust a gut to make it happen.

Hope it works out for him but he won't be remembered for anything at Vale apart from maybe the Crewe equaliser

FGR have apparently rejected £800k from a Championship Club for Doige.

Will need to be more than that for them to sell given what he gives the team and the cost of relegation.

They'll need to at least double it to have any chance. One of the best strikers ever to play at this level.

He's also massively important to us, can't see how we'd replace him.

That's a big shout Chris, EVER ? Really don't see that mate. Excellent striker but that's a big shout for a guy who is approaching 50 games in League football

Steve Bull and Jamie Vardy jump out straight away without any need for Google

Whitfield was at training this morning so that's a done deal clearly. Absolutely buzzing to get that done. Freebie as well after offering 35k in Jan for him!

Chris Eagles has popped up as potentially the other, not sure if anything in that one though!

I did say one of the best ever tbf, but yeah I genuinely can't think of many better.

His all round game is probably better then Vardy's was when he played at this level imho, He can create chances as well as score, good in the air, he gets back in defence for set pieces etc. Basically he's a league 2 Harry Kane. Imo he'll be in the Wales team come Euro 2020.

Totally right GG my mistake. Went Championship from non league.
All I can add on Doidge is that he stood out at Vale Park and looks good on the telly !!
The away game passed me by as it was so awful bar the goal from Reid

Has any striker gone for £1m+ from L2?

Can’t see why anyone would pay that much for Doidge. Knocking goals in in the basement is not a good indicator for reproducing that at a higher level.

If, indeed, FGR have been offered £800,000 for him, I’d bite their hand off.

Ollie Watkins went for £1.8m. He’s now one of the hottest properties in the Championship and will earn us more big bucks in the next year or so.

Ben Whitfield confirmed on a 2 year deal. Great news, hopefully can get him up to speed ASAP as won’t have played for a long time. Also signed someone from Blackburn called Lewis Hardcastle on a season long loan, no idea who he is other than apparently is a midfielder.

Played for Bournemouth U21's start of August so shouldnt be too far off.

No idea on the other lad apart from he's cover for Manny.

Hopefully so, not sure if we are going to have to give Bournemouth a fee or not though as they did offer him a new deal. A little disappointed with Aspin and his comments just seen about not wanting to talk to him after the move fell through in January. He needs to park his ego as Whitfield on song is capable of shredding any opponent at this level.

Whitfield v Luton for example was another level. He has the technical ability if we can channel the post Xmas attitude issues.

I've read Aspins comments and I think he meant he didnt want to speak to his agent again not Ben as he then says he changed his agent and now he will get a second chance.

Whitfield's a good player, he played well for us on a season's loan the year before Vale first had him.

Agree entirely mate, childish , unprofessional and pathetic comments by Aspin. Move on for Christ sake.
We be playing in non league if Whitfield hadn't scored v Chesterfield.
Great signing, pace and a few goals.

The other lad hasn't even got a Wikipedia page but was on loan to Salford once

Chris I don't know when you started watching football but I can list at least 10 that were better.
Kevin Hector, Ted Macdougall, Alick Jeffrey, Arthur Rowley,Hugh Mcilmoyle,Ken Wagstaffe,Bobby Zamora,Steve Howard,Ricky Lambert & Cliff Holton.

I've seen all of them play and most went on to much better & bigger clubs.

Where do I start ? Bone idle, lazy, disinterested, disastrous signing by Michael Brown.
The fact only 2 National League North teams were interested spoke volumes.
However no doubt he will score against us unless we put in one of the daft clause's where he can't play.
Let’s hope there’s no clause, would be like playing 10 men from the start. Who knows maybe a fresh start will fire some life into Barnett but given he’s already moved clubs countless times in his career I doubt it.
He has scored about 3 in his last 60 odd games, nearly as bad as Berahino.
Barnett is a spent force, absolutely astonished he has stayed in League football.
Let’s stop beating about the bush, is he a good signing or not?

That's an outrageously premature and bold statement. Hasn't he played just 1 full season in League 2 throughout his career. I know Wiki isn't always the most accurate, but it suggests he scored 'just' 15 goals last season. Yeah you were shit, but still, hardly ground-breaking.

Phil Jevons (27), Karl Hawley (23), Richard Barker (21), Izale McLeod (21), Aaron Maclean (29), Grant Holt (20), Jack Lester (20), Lee Hughes (30), Clayton Donaldson (28), Top Pope (31), Sam Winnall (23), Matt Tubbs (21), Matty Taylor (27), John Marquis (26), Mark McNulty (25), Billy Kee (25).

Just a selection of players who've bagged much more than 15 goals in a single L2 season.

He may well be a good player for this level, but it's ridiculously premature to label him one of the best to ever play this level.

Hughes surely one of the best at this level over a number of seasons.... Pope in that season was unreal too.

Lester, Donaldson, MacLean some real quality there. Doige is decent but not the best.

Kemar Roofe was pretty good. Wasn’t he classed as a winger though? With regards to Doidge, even Matty Taylor was a better player than Doidge.

Oh, and we’ve signed Elliott Embleton on loan from Sunderland. He’s 5’8” and a midfielder so I’m assuming he’s Whitehouse’s replacement.

Bogle went for 1M to Wigan.
