Is it extra time or straight to pens?
Aye. We do look a better drilled side than last year, but I'm not going to read too much into today's showing. We thought the same thing last season after those couple of goalless draws against Bradford and Newport in the first two league matches and the cup win over Brentford.
Realist.

Decent first half, came out a different team. Opposite for Orient, they did nothing first half but came out strongly and never looked in trouble once they got in front. McAnuff and Wilkinson stood out for them, look a solid side.

Weird thing for us was seeing Shawn McCoulsky come on. Wasn't given a squad no, hasn't played a single minute in pre-season and wasn't included in the team photo last week. And yet suddenly out of the blue he's back in the picture.

Well played Orient.

Still waiting for our first home win of 2020.
Don't think too much has changed for either side in 6 months! You bossed possession throughout the game but lacked a real cutting edge if I'm honest. We could've easily been 2-0 down quite quickly though, if Cadden takes that chance - Cadden looks a good find for you.

Second half was better from us after we forced no shots in the first half. As I keep saying, on our day we're capable of creating a few chances and causing teams problems and today we managed to take our chances as well.

Still weak in full back areas - Particularly at right back, Sam Ling again had a questionable performance for 60mins.

Game of two halfs, but we took our chances and squeaked the win today.

Are Harrogate the first club ever to play in the league cup before ever playing a game in the Football League?
Showing my age here, I remember as a boy all League cup games were before the season and over 2 legs. We were actually 4-0 up in the 1st leg v Hereford and went out at a neutral ground in a replay , think it was Shrewsbury. No away goals counted.
But back to the original question it is possible in the 70's that the likes of Hereford or Wimbledon when there was re-election played a cup game before they played in the league.

An excellent win for Cheltenham at Peterborough today - our first ever win at London Road. Sercombe with a lovely finish from 20 yards or so.

Didn't see that coming at all.

Cracking result that, fair play. Always a shame to see that loveable pair McAntony and Fergue Jnr get beat.

Being a nerd here , some will say what is new !!
Hereford were elected to the League literally based on that Ronnie Radford win against Newcastle in 1972.
Hereford played in the 72/73 season in Division 4.
On August 16th they lost 4-1 to Villa in the League cup 1st round.
3 days later they played their first ever football league game v Reading.
I'll get my anorak

Oldham seem less well prepared for the season than most. Not sure what to expect from them but feel we've been handed a decent draw.
Looks like we are better prepared than you you were not very good and your goalie will cost you this season if today’s performance is anything to go by

Very solid performance from us today on Sky against Sheffield Wednesday, lost on pens but neither teams defence looked particularly troubled. Good omen for the season against a strong team two divisions above.

I fully expected you to win today with all our injuries, but not in as an embarrassing manner as that!

Wasnt really much between the sides in the scunthorpe vs vale game both teams had a few good chances. We just have that experience on the bench robinson and Whitehead today coming on and next game it could be amoo montano Pope who all didnt play today popping up with a goal plenty of options to use.

The last club to play in the league cup before ever playing a game in the football league was Wigan Athletic in 1978. Funnily enough this game was at Prenton Park and ended 1-1 too. Wigan went on to win the second leg 2-1. I attended both games lol.

Crawley played a preliminary round against Wimbledon when they got promoted before the start of their first season. That makes Harrogate the 2nd unless there have been other occasions I am not aware of.

looks like Crawley and AFC Wimbledon have played in League cup before playing in the league.

Due to newly relegated (and League Cup title holders) Birmingham City having a bye to the third round following qualification to the Europa League and the extra Europa League berth awarded to Fulham through the Fair Play league, newly promoted AFC Wimbledon and Crawley Town played each other in a preliminary round. The draw for the round took place on 13 June with Crawley Town at home. This was the first need for a Preliminary Round since the 2002–03 season.

Well, that was shite!

Losing to a championship side, fair enough. Starting the game with four centre backs was odd, the ifollow stream not getting going for twenty minutes and then buffering every five minutes was crap. Looking like a bunch of boys playing against men was shit. Appearing as though the idea of corners was first explained to the team five minutes before kick off was awful. Four centre backs appearing as though challenging for a header was not their job was...

The beer was cool and the burgers got flipped. I'll recover.

Regards the four centre backs that used to be a favourite of Neil Aspin and Michael Brown when they managed (term used very loosely) Vale. Few things were more irritating as everyone but them could see the square pegs in round holes approach just does not work.

Didn't watch our game so no clue if we played well or not, not too bothered about the loss but disappointing to concede both of the goals in injury time.

Fleetwood also played a League Cup game (0-1 at home to Forest) first back in 2012 when the League Cup was used as the season opener.

For all the possession Bolton had, they didn’t do diddly-squat with it - they looked like a team of absolute strangers - and were lucky it finished 2-1 IMO

We started with youngsters, Reece Staunton in defence and Tyler French at right wing-back. I thought they stepped up well.

Pleased Novak has hit the ground running, but he missed what seemed to be a simple 1-on-1. Anyhow, we can look forward to being in the hat for the second-round - not often we can say that in recent years.

Yeah, mainly because that's what they are I suppose, started the game with 11 players on their debut. It'll take time, there were positives but the defending for your goals was comical, Crellin did well early on stopping you from opening the scoring earlier.

For all the ball we had you're right we didn't create as many chances as you had but I'd say that was more from our openness in transition after we lost the ball rather than Bradford's creative ability. Defended well though, I'm sure you'll do well this year.

@masi51is unusually quiet, today?:woo:
No just having a hearty breakfast but i think your view on the match is about right.
Think we are comfortable with the ball but we lack that creative player in the centre of the park.
Our high line will give the opposition chances.
Evatt made a statement by playing all his players from the start on yesterdays evidence Crawford and Darcy need to start. Brockbank is better than Santos at Right C/H and he needs to mix his systems line ups up. Every manager has worked the 3/4/1/2 Evatt plays out.

Fleetwood away in the second round for us then. In all honesty am just glad we haven't got Stoke. It would be a bit frustrating if we had drawn them instead and nobody could go.

Happy to have a crap draw with no fans allowed although the potential home tie with Everton will be a disappointing miss if it happens!
