Erm... it’s a long story.

He financed Paul Wildes to buy us out of administration apparently not knowing exactly what he was buying... then money went missing and they fell out so he quit. Was going to put us in administration again which would have killed the club but was persuaded not too.

Fell in love with the club apparently but made some crazy decisions although has pumped millions in (mainly in director loans) then quit in the summer to take a back seat due to fans reactions to his cock up; whilst refusing to sell.. now in the shit he’s back to sort it out.

Jose Mourinho rang him last summer making him star struck and hiring his best mate Bruno Ribeiro and signing loads of foreign players from the likes of Benfica, Vitoria Setabul and Monaco... turns out they couldn’t do it on a cold Tuesday night in Stoke...

He will have redeemed some respect for this appointment along with Rudge which is probably why he’s done it.
Foreign managers rarely work in league 2 same with a squad full of continental players. Read the chairmans wiki page. Seems like a george reynolds

Redknapp confirmed. A very loose agreement described as 'an advisory role with the first team'.

It's got to worth a pop, we've got nothing to lose.
If he asks to have his wages paid to him in a brown sealed envelope, be very afraid.

Press conference at Vale Park this morning at 10am.

Seems my previous thoughts were a bit wide of the mark. Hopefully Aspin can hit the ground running as we desperately need the points.

The 12 year old me may just internally combust this morning mind.

How dare you imply Harry is in any way dodgy. His defence in court was watertight, he can't read or write and that offshore bank account has nothing to do with him, it's his dog's.

Buzzing this morning... one thing it will do is get the fans boosted and make VP rock on Saturday which it needed.

Aspo and JR back... would never have dreamt of that!

Feels like finally the club has got something right even if it's in a broken clock is right twice a day kind of thing. Understand the point about ex-players being manager etc but Aspin has got some extensive experience in management at a lower level granted but with Rudge and all his knowledge about the game to help too that should make a huge difference. This is probably the one appointment guaranteed to have had a lengthy period of goodwill and patience from the fans which will be needed as this squad is still terrible.

The fractured fan base will be united and buzzing with this appointment so its done the world of good already, the extra numbers on Saturday will probably pay his compo too. Recent home games have been described as a funeral atmosphere. People at the game didn't really want to be there but felt they had to be... Saturday will be rocking now and its what is needed to re-invigorate the fan base.

I described Micky Adams return as being a Return of a Messiah... Rudge is literally god himself saying "F**k it I will sort this myself" Rudge to Vale is what Clough is to Forest, Shankley to Liverpool etc. He had us dreaming of the Premiership 20 years ago at one point!

I have faith in them two to keep us up.

The Port Vale fans seem delighted with this announcement, which can only mean it'll be an unmitigated disaster.

Aha the 'getting an ex player in as manager' approach eh, that ALWAYS ends well.....
Yeah like when we brought back our captain from the div4 winning side of 75/76 in Sam Ellis, only the pubs in Lincoln were upset when he left...

It's a good appointment, and it shouldn't be hard to move up to a safer position under steady hands. Expect a small handful of signings in January to improve the squad, and maybe a couple of badly chosen loanee's returning to their clubs.

Can't be there on Saturday as I'm in Southern Spain, but it should be a great atmosphere.

Rudge must be drawing his pension by now? How old is he?

72... strangely I thought he was older than that! Looked ancient when was managing us!

I'd be worried as fuck if I was a Vale fan. Big, big gamble.

Not at all, after the shit we’ve had since Adams this is the least gamble of the lot. Aspo has over a decade of experience and let’s face it... we’re not exactly a massive step up from Gateshead currently!

Plus with Rudgie there to guide him and assist we will be ok... issue is we can’t sign anyone for three months so can we turn it around with what we have, enough quality to do it but the atitude has been questionable.

It just seems like a fans' appeasement appointment - much like Lester at Chesterfield.

No wish to see either of you disappear.

It is, in fact some fans believe Askey was about to be appointed but fans negative reaction saw him move for Aspo.

Difference between our appointment and Chesterfield is they are going for someone with no management experience, almost the same route we went with Michael Brown whereas Aspo has managed for twelve years, most wanted him three years ago when Adams left actually. Rudge is a shrewd move as with him upstairs we have a massive asset for Aspin to lean on too.

I’d love to see us turn it around along with Chesterfield, watching Tranmere v Orient on BT now shows what can become of us but I’d say our appointment is more sensible than there’s even if their is a degree of fan power behind both.

Realistically we can throw all the names we want about but fact is the likes of Westley and Ince we’re favourites so we didn’t have a massive choice to pick from!

You're certainly not wrong about it being a gamble but to an extent near enough every appointment is as a lot of it depends on the right place at the right time. With John Rudge and his wealth of knowledge readily available (not to mention his contacts in the game) I am hopeful things will work out ok for us. At least more than I would if some of the other names we'd been linked to were appointed.

As aluded to above the main concern is this group of wasters we are stuck with until January so will be a bit of a baptism of fire for Aspo trying to polish a turd until then.

From the outside I wouldn't say it was more of a gamble than employing Bruno. That was batshit crazy

Now Morgan and Kelly are gone at least they may make a fucking effort! First thing would be to show Lawrie Wilson what it is to be a footballer!

But he’d managed Ludogorets in the Champions League!!! (And lost to a Moldovan side) and Jose Mourinho told Smurf too!

I suspect most sides have gone down the line of appointing someone who's been involved at the Club previously to appease fans or get them back on side in the short term.

Keith Alexander was one we brought back, which worked. Less so his assistant, Gary Simpson, 5 years or so back, although probably what we needed at the time.

We had Neil Woods here our ex player from when we were punching above our weight in the second tier, he led us on a 26 game winless run and eventually down into non league, but apart from that he did a good job.
