Lincoln just got rid of their manager so if the Cowleys were close to taking a job in L2 that may change now.

Usual January recall. There’s a theory that MK still owe us for the Scott Twine sell-on fee so that might be an arm twister.

They maybe looking to appoint caretaker Kevin McDonald, although he did seem to rule himself out to concentrate on playing when he took over initially, whether he is having second thoughts and now wants to be considered, we are not sure..

Ever since they came close to the Championship playoffs in 2006-07, Colchester have simply regressed as a club.

Probably one of the rare examples of a new stadium move failing to galvanise the club and help it grow. See Darlington and Chester for other examples.

I remember 2009-10 they were in the Top 6 in League One for most the season under Aidy Boothroyd. In a league that had Leeds, Norwich, Southampton, Millwall, Charlton and Huddersfield competing for promotion with Swindon also overachieving. They fell off a cliff after March and they've never recovered from that.

They cheated relegation from League One with Oldham for a fair few years but eventually went down with us in 2016.

John McGreal turned them into a solid top half side end of the 2010s. The moment he gets them to the playoffs, they sack him for losing in them. They've also never recovered from that.

As I've said earlier in the season, our fans got carried away with Colchester when we played them saying they were a playoff calibre side in a false position. Colchester looked easy on the eye under Garner. Pacey wingers that could play good passing football between both boxes. But they can't defend and they can't score. If you can't perform both the fundamental aspects of football, it doesn't matter how well you can pass a ball or look pacey, you'll be relegated or, at best, scrape survival. I still remain convinced that the only reason they looked good at our place was because we raced into a 2 goal lead and let them have the ball for the rest of the game.

But we've seen it all before. Carlisle in the late 90s and 2000s, Barnet in the early 2010s, Yeovil in the late 2010s and Scunthorpe most recently of all. If you keep getting dragged into dogfights each season at the bottom, you'll eventually plummet if you can't get things to improve. I really do fear for them this season.

I don't think I've known a Club get as many managerial appointments wrong as they have in recent times. They had that Parkinson, Boothroyd, Lambert kinda duration but since then, which is, what, 12 years or so, it's been poor appointment after poor appointment.

He's been gone here for a longer period of time than with us now, so I think the likes of K-Win nelsonpfc and Don Tonberry are probably better placed to answer that because I suspect they've changed slightly since then. Can't imagine they're into pissing about with it at the back still but they're not as direct as people label them.

Bradford is the sort of project they'd definitely suit, I'd personally give them full license and control to sort the place out but having read about your CEO, I'm not sure they'd get that. I'm a little surprised they're entertaining managing a Club where the CEO is apparently such a numpty tbh.

Nah, I very much doubt it'll happen. Just about everyone would be happy if they returned for obvious reasons but I don't think they're everyone's first choice - it's pretty 50/50 amongst the fanbase on whether they're what we need at this point and whether it'd be the right move for the Club. I don't think we quite align anymore. It'd take some compromises from DC/NC for it to be a go'er but I'm not sure they're actually in our thinking anyway (albeit Cowley was at Charlton yesterday, who we have on Tuesday. Could be doing us a favour and some opposition scouting I suppose).

No surprise Kennedy was sacked though (first time since 2014 that we've sacked a manager), he dug himself into a hole over the last three weeks and last weekends interview was the straw that broke the camels back.

The problem with this would be how much things have changed since Hughes' sacking. I feel the fans, and players, will demand a certain approach, so I really wouldn't recommend anything that could even be construed as pissing about at the back.

Cowley's style here was to try a high press when out of possession, not always but in certain situations and for a set duration. Sometimes it worked but not always. Defensively we were generally pretty solid.

Attacking wise, he was a fan of switching play with long diagonals out wide to try and create overloads. Then get the ball into a powerful striker who was good in the air but also decent on the ground. The best version we saw of this was when we had George Hirst on loan in season 21/22.

What we rarely saw was any attempt to play through the middle, making us a bit one-dimensional and easy to defend against. Our opponents started doubling-up in the full back areas and forcing us to funnel the ball through the middle, which we were pretty hopeless at. During the bleak days of last season Oct to Jan we were barely creating any chances for Bishop.

Recruitment-wise, yes, they wanted total control and by all accounts turned down plenty of recommended players, which we'd then see do well elsewhere. Our CEO got very frustrated with this, hence the move to bring in sporting director Rich Hughes from Forest Green early last season.

In hindsight our dreadful form at the back end of last year was a blessing, and gave Hughes an opportunity to bring in his own man, and someone who was happy to work in the new structure.

So, the Cowleys are nice people, who are great at reconnecting the club with the fans if that is an issue. Their football can be effective if they can recruit the right players for their system. It's not always pretty, but they don't just go long to a big striker which is a bit of a myth. They tend to want to hit long balls to wide players who can either cut in and shoot or supply the striker(s).
