Being honest, I don't know. He's managed at one club, Crewe, and as par for the course it was a mixture of success and in the end failure.
I think that he's learned from the experience. managers don't always get it right first time. it's like a lot of things in life. You evaluate the things that worked. you identify the reasons for things that didn't, and you carefully choose a situation where you can succeed.
Sure, in the end, if city don't give him the job, he might have to take what he can get. maybe Grimsby will be a good match for him.
He's someone who'd want a lot of control, and build things long term. He's not lacking in self-confidence. He's a Yorkshireman. He wants the job. How many of those other names being bandied about have actually applied?
If he fails, well, he has that in common with the last 6 or 7 managers, but I think he's a solid manager. He'd fit in well with the culture. I just think it's a good match.
I won't be too upset if it's the Cowleys. They have a good record. I suppose deep down, I just think David will be more committed. He wants to build something. I want somebody who wants us.
I'm not interested in supposed quick fixes. I want a sensible long term strategy, and Artell is my guy.
I'd love to see him have another shot at management because he is a great bloke deep down and if that arsehole Davis got a second chance then Artell certainly deserves one.
As I've said before though, Artell does come with a lot of baggage. The board weren't happy with his conduct at times on our touchline and he was often amongst the most carded managers in the league. A fair amount of players who have played under him aren't exactly his biggest fans either and football is a village where word gets round really quickly.
He's a very knowledgable bloke with a good philosophy for how to play football and he thinks long-term which is at odds with the majority of football clubs. The problem is he doesn't take much responsibility for his failures and that's telling. He still blames everyone but himself for failing at Crewe when some of his decisions were a big factor as to how we ended up going into a very sharp decline. Not playing Tommy Lowery when he wouldn't sign a new deal yet allowing many before him to play despite not signing new deals is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen a professional manager do when I look back at it.
