He was an outstanding captain and leader as a player but that doesn't necessarily translate into an inspirational and outstanding manager.

Only club he managed at without huge resources was Motherwell and, despite getting them into Europe, he was sacked after a terrible run of form spread over 2 seasons.
While our budget was big for us when he was manager, it still wasn't huge for a top L1 club. We were overspending though obviously.

It was nothing compared to Sheff United/Bolton and Wigan/Blackburn who we were competing for promotion with.

David Artell: "Well, I know Bradford are appointing a manager tomorrow. I got interviewed, yeah. Didn't get that one. I've been offered, I think, I think it's seven jobs in League Two."

One to definitely scratch off the list.

I'm calling bollocks he's turned down 7 League Two jobs.

You soon get forgotten in this game, the reason this thread is called the Managerial Merry Go Round is because you get back on another seat ASAP.

He's doing more podcasts than Joe Rogan. Ian Holloway the same. Both desperate to stay in the picture.

Artell actually has Grimsby written all over him to me.

Yeah, someone who had been offered a job with a third of the division wouldn't still be unemployed and touting himself about 18 months after being sacked.

Interesting to see how Alexander will fare in front of a big crowd. The only success he's had was in that famous behind closed doors play off final between Salford and Flyde.

That was the most horrific National league play off line up ever.

Solihull, Salford, Fylde, Harrogate, Eastleigh and us. We got reffed out of our game vs Eastleigh which paved the way for a horrific tinpotter to go up with Orient.

I can’t see our owners doing it the more I hear about their criteria, he ticks some boxes but I’m not sure they’ll fancy him.

With Gareth Jennings doing the bulk of the search, who according to Stockwood is ‘the most connected man in football’, I’d be surprised to see us end up with Artell now. Wouldn’t mind it if I’m wrong though, he seems a steady appointment

I really wanted Artell, but I think part and parcel of him would have been his fertile imagination.
There's no point saying that ex-club's supporters don't think highly of managers. Apart from Parkinson, which managers would we provide a glowing reference for? Not sure how many ex-managers want to provide a glowing reference for our fanbase.
Honestly, I'm just so relieved that it's not Barton, from a character perspective.

I would be really displeased with Artell - don’t even think he’s a bad manager, just seems like a complete arsehole.

It's absolute bollocks indeed. He's embellishing the fact he's been rejected for 7 jobs more than likely.

I know he missed out on Newport last season, Swindon last season when they gave it Jody Morris, Walsall and MK Dons in Summer and Tranmere and Bradford this season. And there may well be another 1 or 2 he applied for. But there's no way he'll turn a L2 job down. He's absolutely desperate to get a new job and move on from that awful final season with us.

I'm still convinced a few players who played under him are begging their Chairmen not to appoint him. There's no way he was getting the Walsall job as long as Donervon Daniels was their captain. Both didn't see eye to eye.

Why would you call him that, was it because he took the chance of playing international football for Gibraltar instead of waiting for his England international call up by Roy Hodgson.

As a person he's a genuine and approachable bloke.

As a manager, he's the biggest control freak I've ever seen and some of his public treatment of our players was totally unacceptable. Especially Tom Lowery who had done nothing wrong except refuse to sign a new deal when he knew he'd get a big move in the Summer.

He absolutely loved Ainley though even though any other manager would've released Ainley in 2021 so wouldn't be surprised if Artell rocked up at Grimsby at all.

Depends if you want promotion or not ? Joey would at least get you that.

Tbf he doesn't say they're all 'management' jobs

Again, it could be Tom, Dick or Alexander for me.

We’ve had proven managers at this level. That worked, didn’t it.

Perhaps we need a manager who hasn’t achieved at this level. Reverse psychology anorl that.

What if he's turned you down 'n all...
That would be fantastic news.

Unfortunately all the noise is that it's going to be him. Another disastrous appointment by a CEO who has no idea what he's doing.

Alexander seems the sort of appointment to make when you’re fearful of relegation, despite the crap season I wouldn’t say we were in danger. It’s certainly not an exciting appointment but tbh I partly agree with the Scunthorpe fan, it’s not as bad as some are making and and realistically who are we going to get when the club is so poorly run? My fear is more drab football, we’ve suffered enough with it over the last few years but I’ll back him as I do any manager that comes in. I’m more bothered about seeing the back of Rupp and Sparks than any manager and have been for the last few years.

IF it is Alexander and he's announced before the weekend game then his 1st game will be Barrow at Home..... His last game for MK Dons was Barrow at home..... they couldn't even win when 2-0 up after 92 mins.
