Matt Gray sacked at Sutton.

Shame because he's done a great job there to get them in the FL, kept them in comfortably last 2 seasons and reached a EFL Trophy final that they were close to winning.

But I did say after Saturday it was a manager who'd lost the players, they were arguing back at him etc. Shows what a bad set of players can do to a manager.

They are a non-league club in almost every aspect. That run they went on to end last season set the tone for this. Be interesting to see who they can get, think a few non-league managers will fancy a crack at it. No pressure, staying up an achievement. Got some talented players there in Patrick, Clay and Smith, but any team still using up budget on Scott Kashket is a foolish one.

I think a few National League clubs may fancy Gray too. Particularly all the London/Greater London/Home Counties sides that live at that level. Woking just appointed a new manager, he would have been perfect for them. Bromley, Barnet, Aldershot all doing pretty well for the timebeing though. One will pop up. Ebbsfleet or something.

Sad day, given us something we never thought we’d see. I wish him well and he’s young enough to bounce back and do a good job somewhere else. I’d imagine the board decided they had to try something as may be our only crack at establishing ourselves.

It’ll be interesting who we can attract given our perilous position. There is time and our budget probably a bit more competitive than we give credit for. Not sure what sort of investment is being brought in by some of our newer shareholders.

Chatted with Matt Grey a few times when he was asst manager here and he is a decent bloke. Knows his football too.

Much as I don't like seeing people sacked I suppose the board at Sutton have to try something (dammed if the do, dammed if they don't).

A few weeks for a new manager to look around before the transfer window. I presume they have a bit of a budget and a new man lined up?

Think we probably have, but certainly not more than 1 or 2. Probably a few have been given the opportunity to resign which amounts to the same thing lol.

Well that’s the million dollar question right there, literally. Not sure we are capable of finding enough for quality players to commit to the cause a la Gillingham last season. Maybe it depends on the managerial appointment but again not sure who we can realistically pick up.

Mark Bonner the early favourite for the Sutton job, which of course means nothing.

It's the 25/1 shots that might be interesting, such as Ben Garner or Gary McSheffrey.

Do we think the Sutton board are more likely to go with a pair of experienced hands or someone new and exciting?
Surely there's a good chance that they'll appoint from within, like with Matt Gay.

I don't think either Jason goodliffe or Mickey Stephens were sacked as well.

I don’t think it can be from within as part of the same group. It has to be a change now they’ve decided to pull the plug on Gray. Mark Bonner certainly fits the bill and think he took over Cambridge when scrambling around the bottom of L2? And made an impact quickly. But he knew the club very well. No idea if he’d be interested, just come out of a fairly long stint for a start.

Absolutely gutted. It was the right thing to do, but it still doesn’t stop it being sad and painful.

Matt will rightly be remembered as a Sutton United legend, and he’s an absolute gentleman as well.

As an interested follower, I got the impression that he was Mr Sutton, much like Paul Doswell before him.

It doesn’t feel like the ideal time to be blooding another inexperienced manager at FGR. Will await developments with interest.

They are going to spend in January too, with an inexperienced manager. Big red flags.

maybe Vince isn’t planning on splashing the cash after all.....the wage bill is already one of the biggest.....it needs an overhaul but Deeney may have said he can sort it from within, other incoming managers wouldn’t be stating that.
Otherwise non of this makes sense, it’s suicidal as it is either way.
