I have to say I'm completely happy wih him. It'as like night and day after GA and the players seem to be enjoying their football again.

Very early days of course, but a lot of our players and fans speaking very positively about GA in comparison to the turgid stuff Mark Hughes served us.

Williamson always looked the diamond in the rough in terms of who was available. Plus MK were always the best fit.

Sometimes it works with some clubs and not others doesn't it. I was happy with GA's appointment, someone who had a reasonable history rather than the untried coaches we were employing but it just didn't work. I hope it does for you.

Good to get that sorted. As I've said, I'm not enthused with Artell but he gets my full back. Will be there tomorrow night, hopefully so will a fair few other Town fans.

And the ones that were gonna throw the most amount of money at it. We were never managerless when they were though so Williamson wasn't an option. I wish we'd have tried to pip MK Dons to him but in reality was never on the cards.

Yeah the owners hung onto Hurst a little too long for that opportunity, not that he would have chosen Grimsby over MK.

Glad you have someone confirmed.

Artell is a solid choice for Grimsby and they are a solid choice for him. If he is as good as he thinks he is, then he'll be a success there. Good fan base, steady ownership who'll invest in January I'm sure. Interested to see how he gets on, I'll definitely be checking how they do.

Let's look at their fixtures and see who his first home game is against..... :surr:

Have listened to Artell's first interview and like that he described our style so far this season as "meh". Have mentioned it several times that we don't know what we are. Hurst trying desperately to tell himself and us that we're a passing side now while clinging onto his defensive principles has made it all so disjointed. Positive to hear Artell addressing that from the off. See you all in the playoffs.

If he implements stuff as well as he interviews then we’ll be in for a decent time. Really impressed with what he says after years of being told that ‘this is it’ and how good everybody else is.

Sounds like he turned down Morecambe last week too

I think it's a decent appointment by Grimsby. But as someone eluded to earlier I don't think Artell is the sort of manager that's going come in and wave a magic wand and have Grimsby flying up the league straight away. He's a builder, if he's given the time, I'd expect he will gradually improve Grimsby season on season, may take this season and the next to build before they are challenging but given the time I see him improving Grimsby. Good luck to him apart from in less than a fortnight for his 1st home game and later in the season in April where I'm sure he will get a good reception.

Oddly when we do face Artells Grimsby, it will be the 1st time we've faced an ex manager since 1987, I don't think there are many clubs that can say that.

Not surprised Morecambe have done this ,when you have no money available can't be after managers you can't afford

Wish Big Dave all the best at Grimsby, obviously not against us like! Think a few fans from other clubs think we have an obsession with him when a job becomes available, guess we just want to see our former promotion winning captain & manager back involved in football. Dave became our boss after the turgid strangulation of Davis, Dave gave us back some hope & entertainment

Hopefully the last 18 months out of the game will have cleared his head of that last awful season he had with us, not all Dave's fault as we lost a shed load of talent, but some of the recruitment and in game decisions reeked of desperation. Hopefully he will have learned not try and do it all himself and let other have input. If he has learned from that and and coupled with what he was already good at, playing attractive football, giving a youth a go and being engaging then himself & Grimsby could be on to something good.

It's interesting timing for sure. I suppose the board didn't want there to be uncertainty over who'll take over, now at least the players know it's Brannan's show. Plus there is familiarity with the players.

But yeah, does look like the cheap option and strange timing after the horror show on Saturday. Surely it's worth waiting a week or two to see how things settle down before making this decision.

He’ll have support of the coaching staff as well as our head of recruitment and Gareth Jennings who’s looking after the performance’ side of things. The fact he’s a ‘Head Coach’ says a lot too.

Before the search started we said we wanted somebody who would bring a real identity to the way we play and give us attacking football, he seems to fit the bill perfectly.

Am I right in that Artell was good at getting a team playing and developing players but was poor in the transfer market? If so, might make sense that at some point we’ll see a DOF come in to oversee external players coming in.

We continue to be the wildcard team of the division. Must have watched us about 35-40 times last season and I genuinely didn't really know if we were any good or not. We'd finally decided that we were shit and then we go and sack Hursty and bring in a guy who hasn't worked for 18 months and was both excellent and terrible at Crewe.

Sounds like an exciting appointment for all involved though (club, manager, fans, board and Crewe fans).

He had a mixed record in the transfer market. Some of his early signings were fantastic (Chris Porter, Eddie Nolan, Paul Green and Nicky Hunt were the experienced players we needed to guide the young kids and all played a massive part in our promotion) and there was one or two successes after that too. However, in his last season he basically had to replace half of the team and I'd say it was ultimately his recruitment in his final season that led to relegation and cost him his job. Two of the players he brought in decided to retire a few weeks after signing and two others of them would probably be among the five worst Crewe players I've ever seen. Our recruitment since he left has been excellent and he actually brought in our current head of recruitment but never got to work with him. I'd say you need to make sure he's getting help with it, I don't know whether that's a director of football or just a strong recruitment team.

I'd say he gave us 2 decent years with steady improvement, then 2 and a half fantastic years with the best football I've seen Crewe play since peak Gradi years, then 1 terrible year.

I'm more interested in seeing how Artell does at Grimsby than I am in Crewe's promotion challenge.
