It would be ironic if a Tranmere old boy took you up to the Championship, after Evatt has failed to achieve that. However think DC will stay with Stockport and continue to do well.

Keith Curle and Gary Bowyer are favourites for the Barrow job.

Curle has had his day as a manager I think as his last two jobs with Oldham and Hartlepool didn't end well. He is remembered quite fondly from his time up here a few years back but his style of football was quite turgid to watch especially at home.

Knows this level well though.

As an outsider, it seems that whoever got this job is totally dependent upon whether the backroom Shenanigans and financial situation is sorted. Otherwise Swindon could have appointed Pep or Klopp and they would still struggle.

Was he more of a head coach or manager at Gills? It seems we are looking for more of the former. Not sure to what level of responsibility he would have over transfers as our Sporting Director is going to take a more prominent role by the looks of things.

His role was Head Coach as we have a recruitment team and DoF, not sure how much say he had over transfers but he was only given one window anyway.

He’s a very decent guy and I wish him all the best

Will be interesting to see what he's learnt since being given the boot here. We got two extremes of style, neither of which were sustainable to keeping his job (admittedly the attacking extreme only lasted about 10 games).

A happy medium would be helpful. We were absolutely abysmal at the back last season so if he can tighten that up, it would certainly be a start.

Pete O'Rourke tweeting that a deal has been agreed. Not sure what to think, doesn't scream upgrade on Wild at all but Gills reactions on there echo what's been said on here. Should have some good contacts at least.

Wish him well, seems a genuinley nice guy, as PUB said wasnt given much time with us and didnt have much time to change things here, would he have succeeded here? We will never know, he was brought in to get us in the play offs and in the end fell well short of the target some fans were happy ro see him leave others thought he should have had more time, for me i wasnt that bothered he was fired, but wouldnt have been upset to see him stay and put his squad together

He did have that little spell where he went batsh*t insane and tried a 3-2-5 formation at that start of season when we had numerous high scoring games and jabo scored about 10 goals in the first month but he gave that up as we leaked goals for fun.

Sortve wish he’d kept that style and tinkered with it, I’d accepted midtable playing that style as each game was value for money.

Sadly he gave up after 7-8 games, his biggest issue for me is he tinkers too much, every game was tactic and squad chances to ‘counter the opposition’ have always felt the best sides are confident about themselves and let the other sides worry about them not change everything each week worrying about the opposition.

Serious question. (prompted in part by discussion of Clemence), are there any managers in L2 (or L1) who have succeeded in the first few seasons of their first job?
Woodman did well in his first couple of jobs, although he didn't stay at Whitehawk long, lower level, avoided relegation rather than building something.

Danny Cowley cut his teeth in non-league for ages.

Lee Bell has done well at Crewe, but internal promotions for people who've been at clubs a while often work well. I'm sure there's another recent L2 appointee at his second club this applies to as well.
Oh, of course, that's Mark Bonner at Cambridge.
Mike Williamson did well at Gateshead. Not sure how big an advantage it is to learn your trade comparatively out of the spotlight.
Nigel Adkins hit the ground running, but that ground was in Bangor, Wales.

My point is that managers improve (hopefully). Our division is littered with the corpses of managers who didn't succeed first time out, and as yet have not been given a second shot.
I'd even say with my fanboying of David Artell that, in order to be considered a success at Grimsby, he needs to show that he has developed since his spell with Crewe.
I can imagine at the very least that Gillingham was a steep learning experience for Clemence.

All three managers promoted automatically from L2 last season had promotions in their first few seasons at their first club (Colchester for Parky, Colwyn Bay for Challinor and Burton for Clough)

It’s hard to judge with a new manager in their first job because it also depends what cash what team inherited etc etc.

They all want their own approach and style you get someone wanting to pass it who has a big bunch of clumpers and no cash and it’s hard to say, also say if you want someone to play direct and the forward line is a bunch of small players with pace and no strength….ain’t working.

What Simpson did at Carlisle 2 years ago taking a side second bottom, mostly keeping that side and suddenly installing some mass turnaround in confidence and form with the players instantly suiting the change in style, tactics and approach is extremely extremely rare and may have been as he’s an old head reading the players he took on.

A new manager isn’t going to know this and he really needs to read what type of side and what type of resources he js before taking job…..but you cannot hope you get club you want…..it’s why I think many fail
