Considering the track record of our owner (+/- chairman)'s meddling decision making this is only a mildly bizarre choice.

As I expect he won't be making it down to Exeter in time his first match will be away against Newcastle youth-reserves, so at least he won't quit after one game because he can't hack the changing rooms this time.

With the position Macclesfield are in any proven League Two managers aren't going to touch them with a barge pole, this is the kind of gamble they were always going to have to take, rather than appointing from within they've gone for a big name. It might galvanise their players and get another 10% out of them or it could be a total disaster, as with all managerial appointments it's a risk.

Could be genius, could be car crash!

I said earlier on this thread that Campbell is basically a penalty kick for Macclesfield. They are bottom of the league by some distance and so he can't exactly lose as they are almost certainly going down.

The profile of the club is increased as well.

Surely its win/win for Macclesfield?

Baffling on all counts. Maybe being at one of the smallest clubs in the football league will teach Campbell some humility. Or maybe he'll do what he did when he signed for Notts County as a player and take charge of one game before thinking 'fuck this for a laugh, I'm off'.

I don't like him for a number of reasons, but I do admire him for taking this job. Just not sure what he's hoping to achieve out of this. Maybe he keeps Macc up, but what are the chances this total novice as both a manager and of League Two football actually turns them into a solid mid-table side or better.

As for Macc, whilst I get not going for one of the tried and failed options on the unemployment line, appointing a total rookie who knows very little about management, even less about League Two and someone who looks like a total head case to boot. Bizarre.

Hard to see a happy ending to this, but who knows.
In his defence, he was arguably right to sack off Notts at that particular point in their history.

In all honesty i'm not against the appointment, as a previous poster says we could have gone down the L2 scrap heap route and brought in another failed manager at this level - anyone with previous success would not entertain the idea of dropping to us.

Looking at the league below, why would any of the promotion/play off chasing managers swap that for a relegation fight, and again wouldn't have L2 experience.

The only other option for us would be to bring back John Askey. It would have been my preferred option simply due to him knowing the club inside out, knowing most of the squad inside out, and genuinely caring about what happens - he would feel as much pain as we do.

For the abuse the chairman receives (and rightly so for some of his decisions in the last 12 months), i'm not sure whether this is is his decision - it smells distinctly like the owner has taken the reigns again and gone left field. unfortunately this has never worked in the past, so history says it's doubtful it will this time.

My understanding is that Sol is seriously badged up from a coaching qualification perspective, and if he hasn't pissed too many old colleagues off during this very strange ways over the last few years there may be some help available from further afield. I doubt he knows anything about the true ins and outs of Macc (Askey alluded to this last night, it's never been run in a normal way but has always had a lot of people who care on the insides to get things done), or a L2 relegation dogfight, so will be a very swift eye-opener when he takes charge. Hopefully he is able to level with the players, can coach them in a way they understand, find areas to improve them as players and individuals and ultimately bring the group together ahead of the toughest 6 months of his own career to date.

The bit I can't understand is what Sol see's in this for himself. The only way he comes out of this well is if a) we beat relegation and proves everyone wrong in his ability to manage at this level as a start to longer career or b) we put up a brave fight, he stays on and we challenge at the top end of the conference next season. I personally don't see either scenario happening, so where would he go from there? He couldn't play the racecard then, he would have proved he simply isn't good enough.

Like I say, going to be an interesting ride. We need to pick up results quickly, we need reinforcements in Jan, we need everyone at the club pulling in the same direction. Heart says this could end up being one of the stupidly bad decisions which ends up being great, head says we'll improve a little bit as we get some better players in but ultimately end up going down with nothing more than a wimper with a handful of games still remaining.

What is the bet Campbell will leave after 1 game in charge because the facilities are not up to his standard? lol

Always had a soft spot for Macc probably due to the fact that it's only 20 miles away !!

This is only heading one way, huge gamble with a bloke who makes David Icke look sane

Played his race card joker so many times and finally someone has listened
Very peculiar appointment

He'll probably say he has had to start at the bottom because of racism ...

Very true, he saw behind the scenes and knew what was coming. But he missed out on a League 2 championship medal and an incredible end to the season, and I can’t see him ever winning that now. Big regret for the Sol man.

I am glad he has finally got his chance. Seems a strange one to me, and I suspect he is on a hiding to nothing. I am reminded of the saying be careful what you wish for it may come true.

Its a huge risk, but given their current plight, they might as well try something different.

Ridiculous decision.

Two better options existed.

Use the money they have clearly used for Campbell and given Danny Whitaker a fighting chance. Or, stop being a pathetic bunch of wankers and reappoint John Askey.

Campbell comes across as a deluded bell end. If he was white he would be prime minister and England manager by now. But cos he's black he's managing Macclesfield.

If you type Sol Campbell into Youtube, all the videos are of him whining and complaining about how he has not become this and that because of his race or his sexuality etc

He might have good contacts at big clubs but not sure how much good that will do you.

Surely everyone in the world thinks he is an absolutely massive bell end and will tell him to do one.

I'm happy with the appointment. If he keeps us up, which I think he will, he will leave in the summer. Happy days- job done.

You'll be getting all the big clubs young lads, they'll be scared of saying no in case they get branded racist.

Hopefully they'll be to scared to not perform.

Alex Ferguson made a decent career of scaring the shit out of players.
