That's a spoof account, but my mate was covering a local football game for the paper and a player on a hat-trick had to be subbed off mid-way into the second half because he needed to be home by his curfew (he was on a tag). Threatened to sue the paper for including it in the match report.

By all means criticise the local communities who don't support their clubs, but I'd never criticise one of 500 home fans who DO make the effort, or indeed the club itself. It's not their fault.

By the same token, but on a different scale, Tranmere fans can (and do) have a grievance with the Wirral public who failed the truly get behind the club when we were knocking on the door of the Premiership.

I bet most clubs who get 1,000 at home make more atmosphere than the often toxic environment created by 5,000 at Prenton Park.

Which is why I am so concerned that, if Pennock does leave, Dale will just go for someone else who sits down and drinks green tea with him. We have a chairman with less than five years interest or experience in football, despite his success as a businessman, what should make us confident that he won't make a cock-up of the next managerial appointment.
