Children under I think 2 years old aren't allowed in the ground in any case
That's correct.

Ours are aged 4 & 6.

The people I know who can't go because of childcare, their kids are the same ages. They'd be happy to take the 6 year old but don't think the 4 year old would be up to it.

So right there that's 3 tickets that would be sold if not for childcare. I'm sure they'll be others in a similar spot. Those missed tickets all add up.

Getting a grandparent to look after your kid for a few hours while you pop down to Brunton on a Saturday afternoon is a far cry from asking them to do a full weekend shift.

Had hoped to convince Mrs Moonie that this game would be the perfect introduction to live sports for our daughters (5 and 7), but the cost has ruled that out. So instead I'm going with an old mate and making a weekend of it.

We released further tickets today, so we must be somewhere near selling that initial allocation. I'd still like to see us break that 20k barrier but it's unrealistic given the state of transport. All trains and hotels (yup, plural) now booked, and the buzz is building for this.

Fantastic effort from you guys, feeling a bit underwhelmed by our sales but it's a hell of an expensive day out and a terrible kick off time.

They would have known, but they probably said 'Oh it's just L2, who cares?'.

As long as Liverpool and Man utd fans aren't messed around with, then they don't give a shit about other clubs especially us lot down in L2.

I presume there was always going to be a play-off final at 1.30 or so this weekend given the Premier league always finishes on the last Sunday at 4pm/4.30?

Just unfortunate it's 2 very northern teams having to travel down so obviously forced to leave very early.

Yeah it’s going to be a pretty empty looking Wembley looking at both clubs’ sales. But understandable given the reasons stated above.

Just be thankful it wasn’t Salford involved. How many would they have sold? 4,000?

Empty looking yes, no doubt we will get fans of other clubs mocking us for it as they won't know the true reasons.

At least it won't look as full on empty as the Colchester Northampton play off final a couple of seasons ago.
That was disgraceful by both clubs!

Not sure what game you're thinking of but it wasn't the Cobblers v Colchester

Last play off game we had was in lock-down - had some cardboard fans though!

Stockport County.
Port Vale had circa 20k and Mansfield circa 17k last season and as their fans said it doesn't look too bad because they just shut the upper tiers.

I couldn't give a fuck how many we take from here on in, average attendance is far more important than hangers on for Wembley. We don't get as many hangers on for Wembley because most City and United fans in our town have been to Wembley loads of times, it doesn't have any novelty factor for them. They won't be missed.

If memory serves me right we both had pretty much the same number of fans in the stadium about 17-18k each. Only someone either really ignorant or on the windup wouldn’t get why it was not easy to arrange travel etc at about a weeks notice. The only real benefit of it is if a few get the bug to start going regularly as has happened with us at least, outside of that it’s not really relevant to the game itself.

Watch your knees on the seats. When Tranmere scored a late against Newport i landed right on the edge of one and cut both my knees up. Luckily i was well able to soothe the pain afterwards with a ridiculous quantity of alcohol.

That was due to COVID so no fans at games .

Unless you were just joking /sarcastic !

;)

I do remember Colchester playing Torquay in the 90s on a Friday night and there was about 17k.

That's the key thing. Your crowds are fantastic at the moment. Better you keep that up week in week out.

If anything i'd say it's a better result that you're taking a similar number to Wembley to 08 yet likely will keep those people coming back this time around. Shows you've converted the handful of games a season fan into a regular match goer.

Not like us. Annoys me at Dale, that for a good cup tie or play off literally thousands come out of the woodwork. Yet a bread and butter league game and we'll be back to the same old shite attendances.

I would rather have a smaller amount of 'proper' fans not just those there for the day out, especially when losing because that's when the real fans come to the fore.
Thinking back to Mansfield fans last year still singing at 3-0 down when the day trippers were probably on their way back home.

I believe the difference was literally just a few hundred extra Mansfield fans but there were clearly a couple of thousand in the stadium which did not get tickets from either clubs because the attendance was higher than both our ticket sales.

I dunno if it was Wembley considering we did not show up, but we had record breaking season ticket sales afterwards.

Just popping in to say good luck to Carlisle this weekend. I do hope you do it as it would be good to have Hellogregory and Carver on the league one forum. That's if Carver has returned after Carlisle bottled promotion back in 20/21?

Curzon Ashton....and Carlisle
So time to start talking about the game.

I’ve only been to one play off final but been to five cup finals and while I know it was only at Stoke the one thing that always stands out for me is how massively different the pre match feeling is for both types of games.

Cup finals it was all about the day, enjoying the trip, the weekend the crowds and the ground, match became important but was frankly second fiddle even at teams came out I think was only moment play started game became important.

That play off final felt so different we could have played at any ground but the day was just a bag of nerves and for me just wanting the game to ruddy start…..probably made worse that day by a late kick off.

It’s a very high pressure game I doubt either will dominate and shall maybe be won with who holds the pressure better.

Both managers should be fine both won play off finals, one has a mass of promotions and the other has a World Cup winners achievement…..I’d expect
Both to be good at keeping a level head.

Teams wise I think Stockport may have the more rounded age and experience, Carlisle may depend on Huntington and Garner but it is sometimes hard to know where the younger players will react.

No doubt media will go on about our lack of possession because tapping ball side to side in own half all day seems to be key to a good side thesedays, heaven help us who try and just get ball into other half then play daring to compete

I am treating it like the cup final you mention above to be honest.

I want to go up but it won't be a disaster to stay down, football is about the journey not the destination. I think we'll be up there again next year if we lose Sunday and I think we'll be down near the bottom 4 in League One if we win Sunday.

in fairness, the last 2 games we’ve massively improved on that side. Our use of the ball was much better and we weren’t giving it away anywhere near as often and as cheaply as we had been.

i agree that pointless possession is meaningless, but good possession is important. If you keep giving the ball straight to the opposition you will struggle as we’ve seen in recent months. Thankfully we seem to have found our feet in terms of keeping it higher up the pitch and Garner has helped with it.

A few more than we had at the NL final at West Ham on a Sunday last year. Carlisle are at a similar number, Chesterfield were as well for the NL final. Notts had alot more day trippers, but for non-tinpot, non-big city clubs 15k seems about the benchmark for a play-off final with limited time to sell tickets and for people to arrange transport. A bit higher if on a Saturday at 3pm with trains running perhaps.

I read that the rugby union premiership are looking at moving their final away from Twickenham; time for the EFL to say feck the FA and move the League 2 final away from Wembley perhaps - Etihad / OT / Elland Road / Villa Park / St James's?

...or Glanford Park if it's Salford v MK Dons next season - not sure Scunny will be using it

It's city fans that are the local menace, not United
Easy to spot the City fans though, still wearing flared jeans with their gravy stained Umbro polo shirts.
