Us old guys who were about in the halcyon days are the lucky ones IMO. Nothing anymore really makes you go wow like it used to.

Agreed, the games are more polished these days but nothing really makes you sit open-mouthed like back in the day the first time you played Tomb Raider, Shadow Of The Beast or Doom in the dark through 5.1 speakers and hearing those invisible pigs run at you (or the Cyberdemon's footsteps).

I have just completed Uncharted 2 a few minutes ago and it was so well done with some great setpieces and some epic fights, it felt like you are participating in your own movie, I think games have the abillity to do that better these days, but I'm glad I started out playing basic games back in the early 80's and progressed till now (with a year break in between) as I think I appreciate where they have come from to the billion dollar games we have now.

First game I remember playing on the Atari was Phoenix :

Got this game free with my first Spectrum - Thro' The Wall :

And the first game I bought for £1.99 on Speccy - Booty (no sniggering at the back please!) :

Those were the days :D

Did anyone watch "That's So Last Century" last night? They had a couple of old computers on there. Brought back some memories.
I saw the end of it and it looked good, will need to try and find it to watch the rest.

What a game this was on the master system and yes you did have to sit through the introduction every time :bg1:

Haha, Booty was one of the first games I ever bought as well. Although IIRC it only cost me 99p from Morrisons. Pretty sure it was made by Firebird Games. I also bought the game called Firebirds by them. It was like Galaxians but with birds instead of whatever used to bomb down the screen shooting at you in Galaxians.

Did you play Daley Thompson's Olympic Challenge on Speccy? I swear if I get athritis in my fingers when I age, it'll be due to that game! :D

Loved it Salty, both that and Hypersports!!

Button bashing at it's finest, but incredible fun.

Summer Games was another brilliant athletics game, but I had that for the ST.

They make those sort of games nowadays all about fucking timing and rotating the joysticks etc.
Was much simpler waggling the joystick left and right, or bashing Z and X to build up speed.

IIRC Hypersports started out with Swimming, and you'd have to remember to breathe or you'd stop moving
Skeet Shooting was the next event I think. There was nothing better than you and your mate in the same room trying to beat each others times!! None of this online multi-player guff

What a game that was. I hear you about the arthritis. Bloody lethal on the fingers that one.

Hypersports!!

Forgot all about that one, I had that too. Aye the joys of playing against your mates on those games seeing who could get the best technique or fastest times while ending the night with fingers throbbing, these kids today don't know they are born!!

He's played that all wrong. If he hits the first ? block it turns into a grim reaper and tries to chase you, but once you outrun it that one at the end of the level is an extra life!

Game options back in the day.

1. 1 Player
2. 2 Player
3. Kempston Joystick
4. Analogue Joystick
5. Interface
6. Change Keys

"Press Space Bar To Play"

So so simple.

Alex Kidd was bloody hard. Not sure I ever got that far with it.

I actually played through the entire thing a couple years back on an emulator on my PSP using save states... the game gets so damned punishingly hard toward the end. It's amazing to think that people would have completed it legitimately back in the day before being able to use save states.

After watching that youtube clip that i posted, i didn't really get that close to finishing the game. I got about as far as 25 mins:ffs:
It's very addictive just watching that video though:lol:

its crazy to think games back then you had 1 option, play for hours and finish it or never finish it because there was no saving

and to think my fucking mum thought I was being spoilt when I argued at her "you can play your game for 20 minutes then homework!" and I said "Mummy I need atleast 5 hours to beat it"

Is PS+ worth it if you don't really play multiplayer?

It is if you like the free games you get. Sometimes they're good, sometimes they're shite, but I'd say for the price of they yearly subscription they make it decent enough value.

I agree, it's worth 40 quid over a year just for the free stuff. As you say, some good some bad, but value for money IMO, and I don't play online anymore that much at all.

Also, I have to chuckle at EskiFan Boi. Do any of the PS owners in here even bother looking at the Xbox thread??

I know I don't.

I do but then I'm just nosey.

Wouldnt bother posting to slag off a piece of plastic. What kind of limp dicked usb-slot-in-their-favourite-console-raping-fucktard would do that?
