For me, I have no problem if we look ineffective from open play and have to resort to set pieces again. Do whatever you have to do to win. France broke down Uruguay from a free kick into the box and a header from a defender. If it comes that way and we win, I'll happily take it.

For sure. If as it seems set pieces are our best attribute use it!

Didn’t a really poor Greece win Euro 2004 mainly from set pieces?

I don’t mind shit housing it all the way there if we had too. Look at Portugal last tournament. Lord knows how they managed to win that considering they struggled in a poor group, only won once all tournament in normal time and were pretty poor throughout.

Whatever it takes il take it just to experience the final for once even if we lost it.

I thought this was the night match tomorrow, until I saw the Beeb advertising it as a 3pm k/o. That's good, means I can sleep through it. :D

We'll see mate, not had a dram all week and in the mood tonight and don't have to do anything tomorrow, so I may have a late one, and just get up when it gets to pens.

You'll watch every second, including the hour build up.
Actually no I won't. Just remembered, Liverpool play their first preseaon match at that time tomorrow, so if its on someplace, I'll try to find that. Would rather see Fabinho and Keita playing their first matches for the club, over Kane, Lingard, Alli and Sterling try to usurp Neymar in the diving stakes.

Maybe, but still worth watching some of the young lads get a run out if thats the case. Biggest game of the day.

If I can't get a stream for Liverpool I'll pop it on and laugh at the drudgery.

You'll be watching it even if you can get a stream of Liverpool and you know it. Come on england

Re penalties: contrary to every other aspect of the game, the penalties can be scored without you being able to do anything about it. For example, a goal scored can always be defended against. But a penalty in the top corner is never saved. So my point was, this identical performance (drawing 1-1, scoring 4/5 penalties) could have very well sent you out and then it would be "the same old england".

So my point is, you're results orientated when the performance was pretty much identical to ones that have sent you out in previous tournaments. But because Colombia, this time around, were even worse at penalties you're looking like Germany 2010 (credit to Chris FGR ).

These kind of hypotheticals are a bit pointless though. "What if we'd lost of penalties" might as well be "what if we had kept our concentration for a minute longer and not conceded an equaliser in the first place". Of the eight 2nd round games, three were settled by pens, and there was a one goal winning margin in all the other games, bar one. The margins are often incredibly fine at this stage of a WC. Difficult to enjoy tight matches, but they're always likely to be the order of the day.

You are absolutely, most definitely getting carried away. And that's fine. But you are.

Personally, my feet are very much on the ground...

Seriously though, I genuinely thought we'd get knocked out by Colombia. Reckon the Sweden match will be a tight affair, can only really see one goal in it either way and wouldn't be surprised at all if it goes to pens again.

*enjoyed reading Bobbin' and Jockney*, we should arrange beers after the WC boys

Anyway, not slept a wink tonight, one win and we're in the semi finals. Lets just enjoy today eh? Regardless of the outcome.

Please don't take me home

I'll be sleeping during this, night work and all that.

Salty - let me know what the pre-match punditry, the match and the post-match punditry were like.

How does the old joke go again? “A Charlton fan, a Millwall fan and a Palace fan walk into a bar...”

This chance, one win from the final four, might not come again for me in my lifetime. Feels weird as fuck. I’m not really nervous, I was feeling worse for the CL final. It’s more a craving feeling. I just really, really, really want to see Sweden win today.

Won’t be no comebacks in this one. Sweden aren’t strong enough in attack and but are strong enough in defence to hold out should they blag a goal from somewhere. Boring cliche but first goal wins the game for me. 1-0 England. Get ready for a very tough watch, what I would give for an early goal!

Liverpool will be fielding 2 teams and both teams will have players with lots of first team experience except the 2 new signings Keita and Fabinho, who will both make their debuts. The match will be shown live on Liverpool TV. It's an all-ticket sell-out and Liverpool have said we can keep 100% of the ticket sales which will provide much needed revenue for Chester FC, who have just paid off Kingsley James and Ross Hannah, who were on silly money. Unfortunately it coincides with England v Sweden.
