Whatever happens in this last 10 minutes, South Africa should not be conceding 30 odd points to Japan.

Scotland v Japan could be fun.

Unbelievable, that's like Jordan beating Germany at football.

Kudos for Japan for going for the try btw. A draw still would have been a huge result.

Think Japan wanted it more throughout the game and that showed in their commitment to rucks and the final play.

I can't believe I decided to watch France - Italy over this. Nothing in that game will top what Japan just did.

That's utterly amazing. I celebrated like a mentalist when he was running for the corner. To score 34 points against South Africa is bonkers.

I thought England did alright last night, Fiji are clearly a stern physical test for anyone as opposed to other 'smaller' nations so the forwards had a tough time which in turn didn't let Ford/Youngs control things. I thought the Vunipola bros made a difference when they came on. Better discipline and England would've blown them away. As I say after every England game, not convinced by George Ford...I don't really 'get it' when it comes to him - he's skilful but he certainly doesn't control games like world class 10s of that ilk. 10-13 are the positions for me that will decide England's success (Barritt was abysmal) - the back 3 are superb, the forwards won't get blown away by anyone, just need something from those 3 positions.

Great win for them - what does that mean for us (England)?

As South Africa were potential Quarter finalists if we didn't win the group but maybe it won't be as important.

( I notice they still get 2 points for the bonus tries though)

SA will still probably win the group as Scotland or Samoa will do Japan and South Africa can't possibly mess up against lesser nations again.

Not too impressed by France there, made Italy look better than they were at times and you question the talent of the backs now without Huget. Picamoles is superb though, shame Parisse was out and we didn't get to see the two top 8s in the NH go head to head.

Japan beating SA biggest upset ever? Seen some banter on twitter about South Africa shouldn't be choking first game of the tournament :brill:
I texted one of my South african friends, all I got back was " fuck off bru ":10:

Japan have invested heavily in coaching & set up for over a decade, NZ & Aus coaches make a lot of money plying their trade out there. A result like this had been on the cards for a while.

A good World Cup showing was on the cards perhaps, but they've not won a WC game since 1991. They also lost to USA, Fiji and Tonga in this summer's Pacific Nations Cup. They're not the minnows of the tournament by far, they've hammered Uruguay twice recently, as well as beaten Canada, Romania and Georgia - but beating South Africa was never really on the cards, as the bookie odds showed by having SA as 45 point favourites. I'm guessing it's probably the biggest World Cup upset ever in that regard, across any sport (well, the ones people care about).

Great game between the Argies and the Kiwis with Argentina up by 1 point at the half. Reckon it will change second half but Argentina has defended excellently so far.

New Zealand have been very average. Far too many handling errors. Argentina have played well but should have punished NZ more during their sin-bin advantages.

Looks like NZ will win this comfortably now.

Eight tries for Wales, is that 2 bonus points? Or not?

Sorry for my lack of knowledge of Rugby, just starting to get into it this year.

No it isn't.

Win - 4
Loss - 0
Draw - 2
4 or more tries - 1
Loss by 7 points or less - 1

Interesting start to this World Cup as no-one has really started crisply. Hard to judge but Wales and New Zealand were far from impressive. I had Australia at 7/1 last week so with a bit of luck they look the business in their opening game.

Ford dropped for Farrell and Joseph injured so Burgess comes in.

I imagine USA beating England in the 1950 World Cup would be the equivalence. Though it shows rugby's issue as a "world game" when the 12th best team in the world defeating one of the top sides is seen as a major shock.

Shows what a terrible error the Cricket World Cup has made by dumping off some of the fringe nations. Japan's win is what will get people interested this early in the tournament.

George Dockrell took aim at the ICC with a tweet after the game, rightly so, its stupid how many teams are being dropped from the tournament. 'Great' for us it will get so much press given its in England.

Good decision, Farrell adds an extra level imo, Ford will develop to be a quality international 10, but for now Farrell is the better player imo, Barritt is lucky Joseph can't play, Burgess was looking like he may have been coming in at 12 anyway. Slade to come on for Barritt in 2nd half Saturday with Burgess moving in.
