FGR play Hartlepool United this weekend. It will be my first visit to club of which I know nothing.

Vague memories from school lessons and reading the News of the World Football Annuals, I knew that Hartlepool was on the coast somewhere in NE [simply because monkey from the Spanish Armada washed up there] and that Hartlepool had record number [14] re-elections to remain in League Football.

So I did a bit of Wikipedia research to discover that Brian Clough started his managerial career at club. And that in a previous incarnation they won the Amateur FA Cup in 1905.

The NE is undoubtedly a hotbed of most passionate football supporters in England, so I expect Hartlepool’s stadium to be noisy and it’s a visit I’m looking forward to.

I might by then have a look on the map to see where they are.

BTW: - On 1 January 2007, Hartlepool United equalled the all-time Football League record of eight consecutive wins without conceding a goal.

Does that record still hold?

MadJohn is your man when it comes to Pools stats with regards to that record.

I'm hoping we have a manager in by the time this comes around and if I had to make an educated guess I think we will, who that will be is anyone's guess, gonna be a tough game whoever is in charge, we have no problem creating chances and get the ball into the box on a regular occurrence in games it just seems to fall apart whenever someone has to kick it in. Despite losing to a decent Newport side we still have the best home record in the league and play some really good football, we shouldn't fear anyone at home.

Enjoy your trip up, loads of pubs/clubs in town and across the marina if that's your thing, I can guarantee you one thing, it'll be absolutely freezing.

Got to be looking at three points from this game really. Just hope Wilson is ok for this game though I suspect DC may rest him anyway with a view to unleashing him on Walsall in midweek.

Should be a decent away following as well for this. Read somewhere that Oldham fans are using this game to have more protests against the owner. Just like to say got my complete support on that however you go about it, we’ve been there with a terrible owner and wish your club well in getting rid of that clown.

Need a win here to kick start our season again. Perfect opportunity to do it at home to Crawley who are below us in the form table.

That record of 8 straight wins without conceding was a funny one. It took me ages to confirm it as a (joint) record. The Football League didn't know. I eventually did it myself. I got hold of a spreadsheet of all time FL results, updated it with the last 4 or 5 seasons, and found the answer. It was indeed a record.

Then Stockport beat it with nine later the same season!

On the ancient history...The FA Amateur Cup win in 1905 was West Hartlepool FC, a separate club that co-existed with us for a few years. The monkey was in the Napoleonic Wars. It was also clearly French, a spy, and guilty as sin.

I plan on heading down for the reverse fixture with FGR, but I'll almost certainly miss the game next week. Music festival up in Newcastle between Fri and Sun. Unless there's a very convenient gap in the stage times I'll be in the Cluny rather than the Vic.

Last thing we need at this present time. We're just starting to show a bit more guile and gumption against mid-table and lower half opposition and if fixtures were kind to us could avoid dropping back into the relegation zone but an away match against the form team in the division has come too soon and isn't likely to be of much help in kick-starting a little unbeaten run.

Need to come through the FA Cup game unscathed. I would hope to rest the likes of Jay, Key and Nombe on Tuesday as the league is more important, but we will see.
I can't see Carlisle as the type of side to come to frustrate us, I just hope they are as impotent as Oldham were.
Expect a decent crowd maybe up to 6k.

We probably will try and frustrate you I believe. The defenders have shown since Millen came in that while hardly the cream of League Two they can be much better than they have been if managed better, and that seems to be Millen's focus. We have nobody who's going to stick it in the back of the net and Millen knows this too so the tactic will probably be just try to keep possession, no point trying to attack cos we'll only end up giving you possession.

Need to be winning on Saturday. Fucking sick of not taking our chances and dropping points to teams who only have one effort on target and score. Probably end in a draw.

Can't see either of us being overly fussed on Tuesday tbh (given the ghastly draw for the FAC second round)

As denzel says, for us best bet is to keep our powder dry for next Saturday and give the "hopefuls" another chance to show their credentials.

Same for you??

It’ll look strong on paper but weaker in reality, partly because the younger ones who play in the pizza cup and may have come in have been recently loaned out but more so I think we’ll give a run out to all those who have been out injured for so long and need minutes, Angol, Ridehalgh, Eisa, Cooke etc. Can see it going to pens.

You should be OK against Tranmere because we rarely score or create chances in league games lately.

A bit like when Hartlepool hadn't won away all season, hadn't scored an away goal in about five games and they came here and scored after fifty seconds and battered us all game to a 3-1 win. It'll be about 6-1 Tranmere! We're very good at messing scenarios up like this.

Completely forgot about the FA cup tie on Tuesday to be honest. Hoping to see Eisa and more of Angol, but we'll need to be putting out a competitive side as Exeter are one of the best sides in the league. Like LS said above I can also see it going to pens.

Northampton: fond memories playing these down the years - a team we generally beat.

That being said, it’ll be a tough game.

For me, Angol has to start if he’s fit enough. I think Robinson is far more effective coming off the bench. With Ridehalgh back fit, it’ll be incredibly harsh to drop Matty Foulds. Can see Threlkeld being dropped and young Matty slotting in at RB. Top scorer, Andy Cook, still injured.

GK: Richard O’Donnell

RB: Matty Foulds
CB: Yann Songo’o
CB: Paudie O’Connor
CB: Niall Canavan
LB: Liam Ridehalgh

CM: Levi Sutton
CM: Elliott Watt
CM: Alex Gilliead

ST: Charles Vernam
ST: Lee Angol

1-0 City (16,300)

I have always enjoyed my visits to Hartlepool. Great fans, usually a good atmosphere and good selection of pubs for a pre match drink.

You will enjoy your first visit, although I think they will beat you on their patch to be honest.

Can't make it to Hartlepool on Saturday. I was up there earlier in the year though, and to get a feel of the place did go to the Pools v Morecambe pizza cup game, which was suprisingly entertaining (and Pools well deserved their victory even though it had to go to penalties) and also, for a Pizza Cup game on a cold and rainy night, well attended (in the home stands, anyway). I mean I would normally boycott the Pizza Cup, but.... Was really impressed by the great energy (and wit) of the fans who barely let up all night (singing to keep warm maybe)- plus the rare sight at this level of fans rushing from one end of the terraces to the other to see the goalmouth action. Oh but the sea breeze and swirling rain was brutal.

A relatively old school lower league stadium in lots of ways, but gave the impression of being one of the most atmospheric grounds in this league, if that evening was typical. Liked most of what I saw of the town too (Headland especially). But it is a bloody long way to go;....

I'd not care to predict how the game will turn out as things stand....rumours that Jamille Matt is injured on our side, it seems like an age since we've played a league game, and Pools will surely have something to prove concerning their managerial situation

Bit of a tough one for us away at Newport - our unbeaten away record could be sorely tested. Hopefully the international break gave Critchlow a chance of recovering from injury.

Unfortunately for Voldemort, McKirdy is suspended so will be unable to give him a good kicking after their Instagram spat.

Mansfield at home to scunthorpe in an east midlands derby.

Before surprising but welcome wins over tranmere sunderland and stevenage this game was long ago pencilled in as a crunch game given the form of both sides.

The upturn in form has coincided with an easing of our ridiculous injury list and the return of stephen quinn from suspension - getting J J toole in on a free seeks to be a masterstroke.

From previous of watching mansfield this is the type of game we’d go on and lose when favourites, a point wouldn’t be the end of the world
