Disappointed with losing that one yesterday, but I can't be too downhearted after that performance.

First half was nice and even, two decent passing sides that lacked the quality up front to make outright chances.

Second half, bloody hell, County were relentless and Gillingham couldn't get out of their own half. But despite the consistent pressure we lacked the nous to actually challenge the 'keeper, and late on we give away a silly foul near our box and every football fan knows what happens in that situation.

Frustrating because it feels like the last few minutes at Stevenage last season, if County just kept their heads for that last few minutes we'd have ended up finishing 2nd. I know it's early days but you can see Gillingham being up there at the end so it's already a six pointer.

But this was a hotch-potch side, particularly the starting XI, and we'll face much worse opponents, so like I say, not too upset at that.

If we'd won 5-1 I'd have been pretty excited at our prospects, rightly or wrongly. It's got to give you confidence going into the next match.

It’s one game into the season, it takes at least 10 games to realistically see how the season may go

Our match is a good lesson in why stats don't always mean a great deal. On paper it looks like we had the upper hand. But the reality is the complete opposite.

View attachment 18931

Last season we didn't have too many consecutive poor performances. So hopefully we can start to put things right midweek and be stronger at the weekend.
I said last year after we came up that there's little (if any) difference in quality between the two divisions, just in consistency. The silly errors you could get away with against Eastleigh et al will be punished here. Once you get that sorted you'll be flying - we were the top side over the last 30 games last season.

Exactly, nobody should be getting carried away either way on the back of one match.

What did people think of the extended added times?

I thought the ref in our game did a good job tbh, he was rushing the players as if to say "I don't want to be here all night either" but there could be some very long matches. We had 4 first half and 8 second half. That almost like the new standard, we were far from being the last game to finish.

Anything that tackles time wasting is good in my eyes. Might take a while for refs to get a handle on it though.

What about yellow cards for nudging the ball away at free kicks? Many of them?

I agree. I hate it when blatent timewasting is accepted by the officials and I include my own club in that.

I agreed it with it completely until that twatting 10 minutes board went up yesterday.

Wasnt in our game, it definitley seemed to work as a general deterrent to us anyway because we do have players that do it. I suppose when we're winning it will be put to the test more. Challinor was very vocal pre match about not wanting it to cost us, you could see it worked to stop our players doing i.

With the time wasting, I liked the fact it did seem to encourage people to take things like throw ins quicker. I think the ref helped with this though and also the multi ball system which I think will be one of those things everyone will wonder why it took so long to implement because it's pure common sense, don't see a drawback to it.

20 odd minutes for us and not much in terms of stoppages. Biggest delay was after sending off. I’m not sure where they find the time as haven’t read up on it. The 2nd half we got 10 mins and other than subs there didn’t seem much dead time.

It would be helpful to go back to 3 subs. No need for more than that. That was a covid thing brought in to help the big teams with massive squads and seems to have stuck. The biggest PL teams seem to get their way one way or other - see FA Cup as well. FA don’t seem to be able to stand firm on anything.

Trying to actively get more playing time is obviously a good thing and hopefully as players respond we don’t just stay with standard 10 mins each half without a bit of thought. If they were firm (or put laws in place) on things like delaying free kicks standing over the ball, little kicks away to delay free kicks, keepers running side to side for goal kicks, non injuries and booking people early that would deal with a lot of the time wasted. Multi ball definitely helpful.

Basically need to look at games as 110 minute matches now from a management perspective.

Refreshing to see us up in 22nd in a league table after getting so used to seeing us 24th for a lot of last season. Things are looking up.
Watching your match on the TV -- Where was the crowd ? Have they all deserted you like the 2 FGR supporters on here that were constantly arguing with each other ? In all seriousness you must have had a pretty poor attendance. Got to be worrying times.

Sour grapes at the end or what!

On the day we deserved to win. Saying we are rubbish and will go down after we won must mean there will be one team below us at the end of the season...you!

Accept the defeat with some grace.

Casey
Have you seen what the other Crawley fan has put on the other page? If you want to act high and mighty and tell people off for their opinion why not start with his pathetic outburst, or is it only when it suits your narrative? You deserved the win we were garbage and imploded, but it’s the opening day of the season, Notts County and Wrexham will be near the top just like you’ll be near the bottom, call it sour grapes if you want but it’s an opinion on a forum if you don’t like what people put you may want to close your eyes as the season goes on.

Apparently they stop the clock as soon as the ball hits the net and don’t restart it until the game kicks off again. So in your game I would have thought six goals at say 90 seconds a goal is 9 minutes already.

Average from us yesterday much better second half which we dominated mostly but poor first half DJ looked very sharp scored one and caused problems all game for them.

Great 3 points for us yesterday, not a major surprise that we played quite defensively and invited pressure seeing as we're pretty good at coping in those scenarios - I doubt there are too many betters defences in our league to be honest.

We still need a bit more up front, and with a few injuries we will be stretched - but we got away with it in that regard yesterday with both Williams available to play which hadn't looked likely earlier in the week. Still, taking quality like Morris, Masterson, Dieng and Hawkins out from the spine of any team in this league would seriously weaken them, so it's nice that we coped.

Crawley only exist to take points off us it seems. Be glad when they're relegated at the end of the season.

See Ash Taylor is popular we did warn you he was done 2 years ago at this level.
Sadly as yourselves and the Northampton fans said he’s a bag of shit, tbh I try to give everyone a chance and not take too much notice of previous clubs comments. But from pre season it’s been pretty obvious it was a complete dud signing. I’m surprised our head of recruitment isn’t having serious questions asked of him.

He looked shaky against Bury. Slipped and cost us a goal against Hull. Devante Rodney walked past him and scored in the Rochdale friendly. And yesterday he got spun and turned on a few occasions and it was his mess up which led to Oyegoke making a stupid challenge.

It's a major backward signing. The guy looks like an infinitely worse centre-back than Songo'o which is crazy.

Our ref seemed to do it for our players but then magically seemed to forget when crewe did it :ffs:

Overall though the injury time is a good thing, fans get value for money and ultimately it does away with time wasting.

it’ll be interesting to see if it lasts though, i’ve seen many fads by the FA/EFL be introduced in august and die off again by september.

I think we had three in the first half and nine in the second...which seems a lot, most of it must have been from finding a new ball whenever one was kicked out of the ground, or for substitutions and time wasting, can't remember either physio being called into action.

In answer to your question, I think it is a good idea as we are getting to see more football and it should either stop or compensate for time wasting, but some of our players looked knackered when the final whistle blew.

Officially around 1800 home fans there, about 300 down on our average from the last couple of seasons, but tbh it didn’t even look that many.

Results haven’t helped obviously, but the general lack of communication with fans plus iffy at best ticketing system means a number of people aren’t bothering. If you make buying a ticket a pain in the arse, and you lose every week people will stop coming. The problem is you often get the impression Vince/the board don’t give a shit about the average fan, it’s all about the VIP/corporate areas plus advertising the parent company/ethics/politics.

For the first time yesterday I heard a number of people saying "Just stop Dale"...I know he isn't everyone's cup of tea, most fans seem to generally tolerate his antics, but is is the first time I have heard anything like that vocalised...it could be that there is now a concern amongst some that his behaviour, and public backing for groups like JSO, risks damaging the club.
