Torquay have: Guiseley (H), Welling (A), Kidderminster (A), Bromley (H), Boreham Wood (H) and Lincoln City (A).

It's a key month for us. In August we played the sides currently in 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 11th, 16th and 21st. We lost to the four top 6 sides, drew with 11th and beat 16th and 21st. In other words, we had a tough month and did exactly what you would expect for a mid table side.

The six games we have in September are currently (in the order we play them): 14th, 22nd, 24th, 20th, 15th and 12th.

After these six games, we should have a much better view of where we currently stand. All of them are winnable and 11 points (3 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat) should be about par. I wouldn't like to say which games though as we're quite unpredictable. We need to pick up points from this run of games though to keep the mood positive and gates above the breakeven figure.

I posted about an analogy with Scotland's 1978 world Cup campaign but it was deleted - I didn't realise you are not allowed a thread about a single club. For those old enough - they will remember the huge hype, or shall we say hubris, the win against England in the home internationals and then the massive flop in the first two games - also partly down to goalkeeper errors, and then all on here, I would think, would know the Trainspotting "football better than sex" moment v Holland, but ultimately plucky failure. Plucky but failing is just not acceptable anymore, plucky but failing is for tinpot clubs, GTFC are not tinpot. I don't think it acceptable to the fans any more (not least after stumping up £100k) so it can't be acceptable to John Fenty. We need to be winners, winning and playing well, winning playing badly, being flukey winners, even winning using Mr Rhead's type of "professionalism". I've watched alot of Leicester Tigers since I came back from Limerick - more than Town - up to recently they were the most reviled rugby club by fans of others - being winners; winning by cheating (all that dark arts stuff in the rucks and scrums), winning with a bit of rough stuff from enforcers like Martin Johnson (still allowed in rugby) as well as winning by skill. Just winning by having a winning mentality...the Mariners may have (probably) the best footballers for this level, but this we just don't have.

We had a fantastic winning mentality for the final third of last season and for the entirety of pre season. A small blip at Kidderminster was quickly forgotten about thanks to 2 great home wins and a disappointing loss at Altrincham - which I will add was part poor and part unfortunate - could've been forgotten about with a win against Torquay. Hurst decided to play the Billy big bollocks card and it backfired. Then Lincoln, we came away after a promising 10 man performance in the second half thinking a win against Macc will make up for the lack of 3 points. Hurst decides to make 5 changes because professional footballers can't manage two games in 3 days.

I'm sick of the Hurst mongering as much as the next guy on here because he has proven he can get the team winning, all we needed to do to make sure of giving us the best chance of winning the league was to have a bright start. Ultimately so far we have not. 4 games winless is not good enough no matter what stage of the season and what tends to be a common denominator in our losses is Hurst playing tinkerman and that's been the case ever since he went solo.

It's sad to have this drama already but it's not irrelevant as it needs sorting now. We NEED a good month. We need a settled side with no faffing about or we'll once again give ourselves too much to do if we haven't done already.

Pre-season irrelevant, in fact I think it may have worked against us. Keeper / defence not really tested and we dozed off twice in the first proper game, when Kiddie otherwise had not had a single worthwhile effort.

The "winning mentality" wasn't really that - better footballers are bound to put a winning run together every now and then. We blew 6 points at home to inferior teams in 4 days last Christmas. Flunked a 2 goal lead at Chester when we were in a gnats cock of putting some real pressure on Barnet and then blew up again a bit at home around Easter. We dropped 14 point home points from Christmas - Barnet dropped 8 - the eventual points difference. We have to be almost faultless at home now to have any chance of winning this league - it is not going to happen.

True, but having factored that in it still doesn't outweigh the inevitable manager of the month curse from striking. Also, we aren't actually that good, and we can't/won't win every game.

We do seem to like playing you though, I think we've won something like 6 out of 7 at you're place, I even remember winning 1-0 at the Deva way back in 02/03 when we were part time and you were going for promotion, and also beating you 2-1 at home in 03/04 when you were romping to the title and only lost 2 other games all season.

If Farnborough are gone and the fixture is void do you technically get a bye or a walkover? I'd anticipate in the first instance you wouldn't receive prize money and in the second you would. At least you are at home, so presuming it does go ahead you don't have to wait for them to split the gate receipts with you to get your share.

This happened recently with us... We were due to play Croydon Athletic in an FA Cup qualifier a few seasons back & they pulled out of the cup shortly before going bust. IIRC we got the prize money that time.
