Shearer or Rooney

Was watching one of Sky Sports' documentaries the other day which concentrated on Shearer. They were quite similar in their younger days. Rooney isn't a natural poacher/target man which Shearer ultimately evolved into but they have a lot of similarities. A young Shearer had pace & power much like Rooney back in his young prime. Shearer wins quite a few points for being able to adapt his game after his serious injuries. Not sure Rooney would hold up quite as well if situations were reversed.

When Rooney burst onto the scene I'd have predicted he'd eclipse Shearer all ends up but as we know, Rooney hadn't realised his hype. It's a close run thing in my eyes. Even though he was injury ravaged I'd be inclined to say Shearer was the better of the two based on careers. Obviously Rooney still has a few years left and it can be argued he's more dynamic than Shearer, but he's got a bit of work to do before he convinces me he's better than Shearer, P4P.

I always quite like Shearer's understated celebrations, they were old school, no nonsense stuff. Unlike some of the celebrations they have these days that you think they'd rehearsed for months on.

I'm convinced that since being played second striker for so long under SAF, the guy needs to rediscover what it's like to just stand up top waiting for a chance to happen. It's just not his game, he's wasted there.
Not Shearer though, Shearer just lived on through balls, goalmouths scrambles and decent crosses.

The two really don't have that much in common.

One is retired and fondly remembered as a PL legend, the other is still playing and currently going through a poor run of form. People will generally go with the retired legend.

Shearer was the better goal scorer but Rooney was the better all round player imo, I'd rather have Rooney in my team. If Shearer had more ambition, played with better players and tested himself in the CL regularly etc. that may have been different.

Crap first touch, always takes ages on the ball, not really creative, gives possession away frequently, can't play a through ball, shooting is below par, can't dribble or beat a man. That's why he's spent most of his career as a utility player, he doesn't excell at anything in particular, he's just a decent, hard working player. Bit like Craig Bellamy, but fat. He was a better player when he was 18. Massively over-rated. Also the worst modern era England player as far as tournament performance goes. He really does hold the national team, and his club, back.

For a striker it'd be Shearer, for an all round forward player it'd be Rooney. Wayne's played a lot of his United career doing the graft for more natural finishers such as Van Nistelrooy, Ronaldo, Solskjaer and even Saha and Berbatov.

I think it's important to point out that despite Rooney's current form, an average season last year, and his many piss taking contract games that he's been an exceptionally good footballer for United.
