Ok then, if newcastle is the north east does that not make carlisle, workington etc the north west ?
If so that means the north west is from Crewe as you say up to carlisle
No, on the East coast the border with Scotland is 50 more miles north
Hence Newcastle is classed as North East

I don't have a strong opinion on it. In terms of compass directions Cumbria is as north-west as you can get in England, but 99% of the time, anyone who says 'North West' on the telly they mean Lancashire and Cheshire (though sometimes not even the majority of Cheshire, just those bits near Manchester and Liverpool). Cumbria is clearly not part of the Manchester environs as evidenced by the amount of Newcastle fans you see knocking about and the similarity of dialects between Cumbria and the North East. Head down Kendal/Barrow way though and folks are a lot more Lancashire like in terms of their accents and their general attitudes to life.

Apparently the old government regions did used to include Cumbria alongside the North-East in a region just called 'North' and for BBC purposes we are in 'North East and Cumbria'.

When I say the North-West in this thread, I mean the footballing heartland, which we are not part of. When I say South-West I mean the part of the country where Bristol is the closest main city and where there historically haven't been many big football clubs... wherever you draw the boundaries of that.
The only things linking Kendal to Lancashire is our Lancaster postcode and a filled in canal.

Kendal is very much linked to the fells, lakes and farmland of the Southern area of the Lake District. Essentially the old County of Westmorland. Calling a Kendalian person Lancastrian would cause offence and you'd be rightly corrected in the necessary fashion.

I have lived there all my life bar a couple of years away in Lancaster. The people of Kendal are most definitely more Cumbrian than Lancastrian. Kendal has a Cumbrian rural feel about it, however the towns of Lancashire have that dark dank old industrial feel about them.

It's why many in Kendal still consider Barrow to be Lancashire. Barrow is nothing like Kendal and does have a Lancashire feel about it when visiting.

Edit: Thinking about it, Kendal has more in common with proper rural Cumbria than Carlisle does.

Wow that could be deemed quite a snobby view lol, no offence intended.

Not at all. I've spent many a good day and night in Lancashire. Nothing wrong with the place and I like the dark dank style of the towns, there's a certain romanticism about it. However Kendal is not like Lancashire in its nature and I wanted to correct that statement.

I love kendal, i was there a couple of days ago and we discussed the possibility of moving from the west cumbria area down.
I dont get a town feel tho, i get more of a large village feel. Maybe thats because i come from the manchester area.
As for lancashire i understand what you mean by dark and dank but i associate that with the large towns, preston, bolton, oldham etc but only the centers, the outskirts of all these towns have some stunning semi rural villages to live, like kendal in my view.
I live in workington and i call it quaint, doesnt go down well lol

Oh yeah there's some beautiful places in Lancashire. The Trough of Bowland is exceptional.

I guess with Lancashire it's hard not to think of those industrial towns, (there's also that Blackburn/Burnley area), in the same way that it's hard not to think of sheep when mentioning Cumbria.

Kendal does have a village feel for a decent sized town and I understand why the residents of Workington would be upset at being called quaint. The place isn't exactly Hawkshead or Glenridding.

Then again Workington isn't exactly Manchester, so you may have a point! It's all prospective from where you grew up.

Penrith's just full of drunken farm-yackers downing pints in Wetherspoons and driving their tractors through the narrow streets at fifty miles an hour.

We are in the West Country, and are further South then places like Stevenage, Colchester and Cambridge in the East. So geographically it is pretty accurate to say we are South West rather then Midlands I would say. Gloucs has always officially been in the South West region in any case, the only reason Exeter fans say different is because to them virtually every fucking place is 100's of miles north.

To me it's not a competition between places being better than other places. I believe its wonderful that in a land the size of Britain that we manage to have so many varying regions and towns with their own unique personalities and dialects. Without it we wouldn't have all the fun stereotypes and rivalries we all enjoy.

Given the chance of a referendum how do you think the great Barrovians would vote, Cumbria or Lancashire?

Staunch Cumbriteer. Always been Cumbria as far as I'm concerned.

Old people/little Englanders - Lancashire
Everyone else - Cumbria

Interestingly, this week the proposal is being put to government to create a unified district council of Barrow, South Lakes and Lancaster. You'll be one of us.

Maybe you'd get a generational divide in the answer. The change took place in 1974 which is quite a while ago now although not that long ago that you'd have no Lancastrian born Barrovians knocking about.

Geographically speaking it makes perfect sense for Barrow to be part of Cumbria.

You beat me to it, simply a case of age.

I've seen that but Lancaster doesn't have anything to do with it. Cumbria will be divided into two councils; Eden, Carlisle and Allerdale in the North and South Lakes, Barrow and Copeland in the South.

Makes sense. Having six separate councils in one county doesn't make sense from a financial point of view.

Cumbria will still be Cumbria.

This one's different - it's called The Bay unitary bid. It aims to draw away some powers from Cumbria and Lancashire County Councils and effectively replace Barrow, S. Lakes and Lancaster City.

Copeland wouldn't really fit the south though... despite it looking like a southern district on the map, there's fuck all in most of it besides Sellafield and the less said about Millom the better. It's very slow going getting from Copeland to either South Lakeland or Barrow and the vast majority of Copeland's population live around Whitehaven much closer to Carlisle and Penrith in terms of travel time than Barrow or Kendal. If they want to reduce the number of districts they should just make Cumberland a thing, but then let the south have Millom.

Not seen that one mentioned, must be keeping it quiet around here. Is that proposal in opposition to the one I mentioned or something else? Not like the government to confuse matters. I don't think it's a good idea having Lancaster having influence on Cumbrian towns. Kendal hospital has become a non entity since the creation of the Morecambe Bay NHS trust everything is about Lancaster hospital, although Barrow hospital remains decent from what I've heard.

The issue is that Cumbria is a massive area with lots of empty space between the main population centres. Transport links are dreadful. Barrow to Carlisle on the train can take 2.5 hours.

Maybe the best suggestion is what shoddy says and bring back the counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, with a vote in furness to either join Westmorland or Lancashire.

Bournemouth aint South West. The South West haven't had a Premier league club, ever. I think we have a lot of catching up to do before we are taken remotely serious. Especially with Exeter Chiefs doing so well (English and European champions) it makes it rather hard for footy to grow locally.
Swindon were in the PL 93-94, crappy season and we came straight down although took 4 points off Spurs!

Ideally Millom should be cut off and pushed out to sea.

What is Millom and why is it so bad.

Also like the idea of tractors doing fifty mph. Round here they only do that if there's no one to hold up.
