So back to Star Wars. I think I settled on them being aliens that happen to look like humans.

Always bothered me in Star Trek that crews of the Enterprise were mainly from Earth.

And generally white.

What happens to all the Asian and black people in the future?

I put it to you that humans on earth are aliens and those in Star Wars are 'normal'.

Same difference, just a swap of terms. If what we know now is termed 'human' and everything else 'alien' the same situation is there by swapping these terms.

I haven't really seen much of Star Trek but isn't there a black lady and an Asian fella in the originals? How much more inclusive can you get?

Yeah, I have to say I'm no Trekkie, but I always thought it was one of the original things to really be racially inclusive. Am I not right in thinking that it even featured the first ever mixed race kiss on screen?

As for the Star War issue... is it possible that the humans of Star Wars, in the future, have some kind of apocalyptic event that forces them to flee their "far far away" galaxy and come to ours... and they settle on earth and become early man? Obviously you have to ignore a lot of evidence of pre-humans and such for that

I once saw a great theory actually about how this was just the case and (hear me out here) it's set in the same universe as... Harry Potter. The magic they use is actually the force, so Hogwarts is actually a school for Jedi, but they don't know it. I don't remember the details but it was convincing at the time, I swear

It all started when I wondered if I could remember Earth being mentioned anywhere in the films, and I couldn't (I've only seen the original 3 and TFA).

With that in mind, I assumed that they were aliens that happened to look human but then I wondered why they are so ordinary. If there was free reign on what they could be, why make them so human? So I was left in the middle.

I then pondered a more philosophical question about what it is to be human. Consider this example (ignoring Star Wars for a moment):

We discover a way to travel across the universe many times faster than the speed of light. We come across a planet thousands of light years away which is inhabited. The creatures we find there are exactly human-like and there is no way to tell them apart from us. Are they human? Can only Earth-born people be called human or is being human a genetic thing irrespective of where you were born?

A human is a homo sapien, it's your species, it wouldn't change no matter where you're born. "Terran" is usually the go-to sci-fi designation for a human born on Earth.

Whites makes up quite a small minority of the world population though, yet they make up most of the crew. I mean, if we assume current demographic trends continue then there shouldn't be any white crew members, if anything.

Star Trek has to be assessed in context. In almost all of its iterations it was inclusive/socially progressive/whatever*. But most of that context is as a major American network TV series & film franchise of 50-20 years ago.

*I mean, very broadly speaking. The Ferengi etc not so much.

Why meh?

Its simple just like all the others and could have a few meanings. Is Luke the last Jedi, does Luke die and Rey become the last Jedi? Is it plural and they are both the last Jedi or are there others?

A new hope, empire strikes back, force awakens etc. All decent titles and explain the story, just like the last Jedi most likely will, not sure why its meh.

As for humans, well its set a long time ago in a galaxy far far away so they are probably not humans like us, just look like humans... Do they call themselves humans at any point in the films? I really don't remember.

It also kind of makes 'Return Of The Jedi' redundant as a title also. Its pish.

The title in Brazil uses the masculine and singular word, so it's almost certainly a reference to Luke.

Doesn't mean that's it not more broadly polysemic. I think it's a fair assumption that the film is going to tread the same lines as Empire: passing of the torch, etc.

I've actually just started reading Star Wars Bloodline, a book set in the years between Episodes 6 and 7 to bridge the gap (and apparently fills in a lot of details... but like I said, I've only just started it) and it does refer to the race as being "human".

As for the title, I think it's fine. Obviously the film itself will give better reasoning for the exact title, but I see no reason that it's any worse than any of the others...

Also, Saltire brought up "return of the jedi"... remember the fact that in the years between 6 and 7, Luke was actually training a new generation of Jedi, so they did technically return... even if they were just mostly in training. Though that seemingly came to a halt when Kylo Ren decided to become a dick and fuck them all over, causing Luke to give up and go into hiding.

Yeah, Kylo wiped out a load of Jedi trained by Luke Skywalker... but lost to an 8 stone girl who realised she was force sensitive about half an hour prior...

Except he didn't wipe them out on his own, there was someone else with Rey and Kylo had just took a bowcaster shot to the stomach...

Oh and finally it's a film, be pretty boring if he just force choked Rey to death!

Yeah, a lot of people seem to miss out the fact that he took that shot. A shot that, previously in the film, sent people flying, getting Han all excited when trying it out for himself. He took that sucker and managed to stay standing... but he was hardly at 100% for the fight against Rey. And Rey clearly has something special about her, she managed to influence that James Bond Storm Trooper on like her 3rd attempt ever of using the force.

And yes, there is also the small matter of the fact that its Star Wars... you have to be able to suspend your belief, you know, just a tiny fucking bit.

It's not up to me to suspend my disbelief it's up to the writer and director to make me. The MaRey Sue stuff was just bad writing, she could beat him because they wanted her to, nothing set it up at all. Not as bad as the plans, Rey's hovel, the crash site and the Millennium Falcon all being within walking distance on an entire planet, but still.

So the titles in other languages reveal the last Jedi to be the plural version.

Seems its just me from reading around but I can't say I got that excited from this trailer, we've seen X wings in space flights, Millennium Falcon taking on tie fighters before. The two best parts for me were the long range shot of (presumably) Rey practising with a saber as Luke watched and the last bit, other than that I didn't think it did much to get hyped about, but I appreciated there are 8 months till it comes out so plenty of time to ramp excitement. And the fact its likely to be a near billion dollar film perhaps they want to keep a lot hidden.
