Oh those special effects were terrible. Suitable for a PS4/Xbox One game yes; not a big budget film, and really they didn't need to be there.

As for the film, the first 80 minutes or so was good, the last 50 minutes (everything from Scarif on) was bloody great.

Fuck yes, Darth Maul. And yeah, he's a character with even less dialogue than Boba Fett in the movies. But he's a fucking badass all the way (much more so than Boba) who's got a fucking double sided light saber. Plus his music is pretty much the best music in all of Star Wars. Does Boba even have music?

Maul killed the guy who both discovered Vader, and trained Obi Wan who went on to train Vader... so you know, Qui Gonn was hardly a fucking pushover. Who, I ask you in the fuckest of fucks, did Boba Fett ever kill? He may have given that Sarlaac pit a bit of indigestion but that's about all the damage he ever caused.

I grinned like a twat at his super cheesy "be careful not to... choke... on your ambitions, director" line. That whole talk was fucking brilliant and seeing Vader force choke the fuck out of somebody again was great.

And then that second scene? Fucking hell. Everything the prequels did to diminish how much of a badass Vader is was completely undone in one stroll down a corridor. Imagine that shit coming at you.

It was OK on the whole I thought. The brilliance of the third act makes you forgive/forget how rushed the first and bloated the second one was.

I think the general opinion is that, no matter how people felt about the rest of the film, that final act was basically one of the best Star Wars has ever given us. I absolutely loved the planet of Scarif and the whole battle was superbly done... as well as actually being pretty tense, especially for a movie where you knew they were bound to ultimately succeed

I've not mentioned yet how I love that the film finally not only explained, but fully justified one of the biggest and strangest plot points in not just Star Wars, but all of cinema history. It always seemed absurd that a planet sized space station would have one tiny weakness that, when hit, would blow the entire thing up. But Rogue One actually gave a more than acceptable explanation for that. It may have taken 40 years, but the answer was certainly satisfactory for me.

So R2-D2 and C3PO being on Yavin 4, Admiral Raddus' ship (with Leia's ship attached) had already left the moon with the droids still on the moon, how the hell did the droids get on the ship for the start of episode IV..... anyone?

So when I heard about this film I was rather underwhelmed as I didn't think they were moving on the saga at all, and my fears were confirmed when I saw the first trailer (didn't watch the others as I would've saw half the film then), which I thought was not Star Wars, it looked just like another doomsday film, too dark and serious for its own good, and I thought Star Wars didn't need to be another clone of so many other films out these days.

Good signs however emerged with the reviews it was getting and I was always going to watch it anyway even if would be shite as it still has Mads Mikkelson and Ben Mendelsohn in it, and no matter what they are in, they are always worth a watch.

As for the film itself, well it is certainly a darker, grittier and dirtier Star Wars than we have seen, but my misgivings about that quickly gave way as it rolled along at a cracking pace, and a great thing about it also was that it seemed to open up the SW universe that bit more to include new worlds, and flesh them out with characters that seemed realistic, that could exist side by side among us as we went through the worlds. The cinematography was utterly astonishing, and was filmed in a way that made me feel I personally was involved and standing right next to the characters, and this added to the believability of the story and the settings as a whole. There was one scene in particular early on where you wander into a cantina with all the aliens looking at you, and I genuinely felt it was me doing that, wandering into a place I shouldn't have! This happened again with the shots of the x-wings later on, either on top of the ships themselves, or when they dived in amongst the shield structure thing, and it was tremendous!

CGI Cushing worked well for me; and I believed in him even if one or two bits looked a bit unreal, but I can forgive that. The sarcastic droid as well wasn't too funny and was balanced very well between sarcasm, humour and pathos, unlike some of the other frankly annoying characters shoved into the saga in previous films. And the entire sacrificial theme running along the end of it added depth to a gripping storyline that was well done. The last 5 mins with Vader was superb, and though we shouldn't really like that unless we are psychopaths, him chopping down the good guys left, right and centre made me get goosebumps! Perhaps though what they should have done was just introduce him there at that scene without seeing him earlier, then it would have been utterly jaw dropping!

Anyway, its up there in the top three in the saga for me, and I will go and see it again very soon I expect!

I think that is in part due to the film having the "crutch" of a supporting universe and narrative (and I don't mean that negatively) to shape its overall direction but leave a bit more room to take more risks and be less "safe". TFA was hampered, imo, by them playing it safe with a NH rehash to just avoid the prequel type backlash, I suspect the next two to take a few more risks now people are a bit more comfortable with and have confidence in Disney as controllers of the franchise.

Good film, some people I knew said it was darker but I am not sure I agree per se, yes more people died but the most brutal deaths were reserved for the poor fuckers in the corridor rather than the named characters.

I loved the film, but I think I am in the minority that thought that the actually war scene was a bit too long. I mean, how many imperial ships came out in comparison to the x wing clan. They should have been wiped out in the time it took to beam the plans.

netflix are doing a new star trek series. i know that it started on tv before film but the interest is definitely still there for a sci fi based tv show. problem would be how much it would cost to match the fx to the quality of the films as if it was crap it would definitely put a dampner on it

I agree with most opinions on here really.
1.That scene!

2. It now allows an almost seamless transition towards a New Hope. Having seen RO, any time you now watch NH you'll know exactly what has happened prior to Vader storming the doors of Tantive IV. The lead up to said scene was fantastic as well and it adds a lot of depth to the original trilogy. For what was a predetermined ending I think it was that transition which was the best thing that came out of it.

3. I've never been more bored of connectivity issues. How many times were there issues with signals? Zzzzzz

4. Easily on par with Return of the Jedi for me which is essentially Muppets in Space.

Think people saw a different film to me. It was wall to wall fan service and unintelligible action. Edge and grit are not proper substitutions for characters and humour. TFA might have lacked originality but at least it felt like a Star Wars film.

So I finally got around to seeing this the other day. Great for a nostalgia kick but also I think a really good enjoyable film in it's own right.

Whilst it wasn't perfect, the stuff on Jedha was a bit meh, and there were periods in the middle where it lacked a little zip, the final 45 minutes were sublime, everything around Scarif basically was fantastic.

Maybe it would have been good to see a little more of Vader, but it'd have been dangerous to over-do a good thing. And it must have been tempting to do so given that Vader is such a crowd draw. But my god when he did appear it was f**king good!

Also for a film where we all obviously knew roughly how it'd end, it did a brilliant job of keeping the tension high and gripping as the conclusion played out. And it made me leave wanting to immediately go home and watch the original.

It was a premise that was risky and could have gone horribly wrong. But they did it carefully and cleverly with some excellent talent, and got it pretty right.

It all started when I wondered if I could remember Earth being mentioned anywhere in the films, and I couldn't (I've only seen the original 3 and TFA).

With that in mind, I assumed that they were aliens that happened to look human but then I wondered why they are so ordinary. If there was free reign on what they could be, why make them so human? So I was left in the middle.

I then pondered a more philosophical question about what it is to be human. Consider this example (ignoring Star Wars for a moment):

We discover a way to travel across the universe many times faster than the speed of light. We come across a planet thousands of light years away which is inhabited. The creatures we find there are exactly human-like and there is no way to tell them apart from us. Are they human? Can only Earth-born people be called human or is being human a genetic thing irrespective of where you were born?

So back to Star Wars. I think I settled on them being aliens that happen to look like humans.
