Fucking loved it, sure there is plot holes which hopefully most are explained in the sequels but its still Star Wars!

I was a bit bothered by how easy Fin and to some extent Rey was so easily able to fight Ren but then if they couldn't they'd both be dead now and what would the point in that be?
But I loved Ren as a villian, evil and powerful with a mask on, stopping a blaster shot mid air! Less powerful, conflicted, boyish even without the mask, maybe thats why he loses the fight he didn't have his mask
But loved him smacking his wound like he was trying to give himself pain to make him more powerful with the dark side.

Biggest question mark I have is R2 and having the map the entire time and being asleep only to wake up for no reason and show the map, doesn't make sense to me
Need to see it again

Still it was awesome and will see it hundreds of times again just like the other 6!

Oh and shoutout to the trailer makers, thats how you do trailers, advertise a great movie without revealing anything and what you do reveal are out of context with the actual plot of the film.
who'd have thought it wasn't Han and chewie flying the falcon through the star destroyer?

I assumed Luke programmed R2 to reveal the rest of the map whenever the Republic/Resistance/Whatever needed his help and the Empire were at least temporarily unable to get to him (Starkiller exploding). Or else if *theory* Rey his daughter tried to find him...

Not even gonna tell you what Abrams' explanation for R2 waking up was.

Apparently BB8 whispered to him. Yes really.

Just back from my second showing in 3D and WOW. Fucking Loved even more. Was excited and in total awe at the midnight showing and I missed a few interest bits. But when you watch it again it actually holds its one as a stand alone movie despite being a rerun of ANh. Which is masterful realy.

Apologies but thicko me cant fathom out this spoiler malarkley so sincere apologies but SPOILERs AHEAD!!!!!!!!!

Besides havent we all seen it by now??!

I loved it.

there were some similar star wars tropes or themes about a droid with information, a cantina (i'm guessing there are many), force users killing people or choking them for info etc. Kylo is Darth's grandson. I'm glad he was wanting to own the things his grandfather owned to channel that dark side. That slotted in nicely. Star wars wasn't a wholly original film. It borrowed from all over the place, now TFA is doing likewise. Rey is excellent. Her cute face, her independence, her jedi traits, her familiarity with machinery - who does that remind you of (although shes scavenged for most of her life through huge ships)

Finn and Rey fighting with a lightsaber. Many are getting their knickers in a twist. A lightsaber is just a weapon. A laser sword. Han used one, General Grevious wielded many. Rey used a staff, Finn, I would imagine had combat training with those riot control guns, so both had the back story to be able to swing a laser sword around. Finn gets slapped around and Rey holds the lightsaber just how she sees Finn holding it. But with better combat survival can at least fend an injured Kylo off.

I liked the new death star planet thing that sucked the energy out of a nearby sun and channelled it to destroy the fuck out of rebellious planets. The death star 1 had one hit, the death star 2 - no hits, and death star 3 - a system. Clearly blowing up planets is their thing. I loved the design of it, brilliant. Snoke is pulling the strings, and probably has bigger plans than death stars etc. Is the first order just cover or a ploy whilst he resurrects the dark side. Is he going down the sith route of the rule of 2 or something else.

The Han moment. For me, without a big character death the terror of Kylo Ren never happens. If the main characters cant die, then the threats are not real. I was kind of hoping Finn got killed too, or chopped up at least. The dialogue seems to suggest that Han wasn't a particularly good father to Ben. And Kylo struggling with the lure of the light towards the lure of the dark was excellent with Han's hands on his lightsaber. The conflict in Kylo was ended when he killed Han. And lets face it, Han needed a good end, what with Harrison's propensity to almost kill himself in his planes. What better way to go? if Harrison dies or becomes old & infirm between now and 2017 and we had to have him die CGI or off screen. This is the best way. Han was always a scoundrel, a smuggler.. its what he knew. When he walked across that walkway, he knew it was walk back with Kylo or die. No parting of the ways amicably when Han is there to blow it up.

The humour of the film was charming and not prequel-esque slapstick. The monsters on Han's freighter were hilariously evil and chaotic at the same time. Chewie was brilliant. When he got shot and cowered like a puppy... oh my goodness. I couldn't stop laughing. And the first aider saying how brave he was.. hahaha... chewie has given so many brilliant pieces of humour over the 4 films.

Phasma has cashed in on the fett fanboys and got the fangirls flailing. Just a shiny suit, captain of the stormtrooper fleet. The first order may well be the start of something.. i reckon in episode 8 we'll see a more robust and nastier outfit with Phasma all the wiser.

Rating? Its star wars and I loved it. Its sad to see people wanting to rip holes in a good fun movie. Ive seen people complain about the nods, to the cgi, to the planet splitting up... people.. its a fantasy space film for the family. Its make believe. Chill out, have fun.. enjoy it.

I can believe that. These movies have never been particularly smart and they don't have to be.

Yeah have to agree on Phasma, just look at Boba Fett, he is one of the most known villians in the series yet he actually did very little in the original trilogy and was very poor in the fight he died in. I think it was the expanded universe that made him into a great bounty hunter and maybe Phasma has the same fate.

After all the positive reviews I was left underwhelmed. The performances were surprisingly good (Daisy will be a star) and the action scenes were decent, but the plot was paint by numbers as far as space opera goes, with too many convenient chance meetings and gaps in logic. You could really take the script to pieces with all the little things that didn't make sense. In fact I'm sure there are pages and pages of fanboys going through them as we speak. That said, it's still far superior to the prequels.

I thought Revenge of the Sith was better, maybe even Phantom Menace.

I liked Revenge of the Sith mainly due to the fact it was basically a film about Anakin's transformation into Darth Vader, but The Force Awakens is superior to all the prequels IMHO.

Got around to watching it today liked Finn but it still confuses me what role he actually has in this franchise with the OP nature of Rey also the final battle seemed unrealistic as it seemed they wanted to make a strong female over the actual plot of the franchise.

Oh and on the subject of the disappointing Plasma I was surprised they didn't give her the scene with the fight with Finn when he was battered by the Stormie, would have set up her character as a true badass

ROS has two films worth of build up behind it though and was tying the trilogies together, it had a bit more meat to work with and a finality to it.

Technically, The Force Awakens has had six films worth of build. It also had the freedom to go anywhere it wanted, while ROS had a set plot that everyone knew was coming. The point about finality is a good one though.

Everything that happens after 6 is new as are most of the main characters, and we have/had no idea where the story is going. We have another two films to learn the story and have to wait for them, we don't have the luxury of getting to watch all three in one go as I suspect most of us have had with the previous films.

It wasnt great but it was better than TPM and AOTC.

well, yes, but a kick in the crotch, a kick in the stomach or a kick in the eye: you're still getting kicked.

The thing is though, they're trilogies that are maybe informed by the others but the pivotal plot points are centred around the context of their own stories, the first three are Anakin's turn to the dark side, the original three are the story of Luke Skywalker, this three is like "Rey's story" so whilst yes they're obviously informed by the others, the build to the main crux of the plots are developed in each trilogy, ROS was the climax of that arch and drew on the material already set up for it, of course it leads into IV, V and VI but Anakin as the central character is replaced by Luke just as Rey is likely replacing him now.

Never properly seen any of the Star Wars films, not really my genre (yes I know, I'm an idiot) - can I get away with going to see this film without having any prior background knowledge at all?

Yes mate, it doesn't really build on anything previously (google what "the force" is) and seems to do its own little thing.

Hope this helps.

Just a quick one, have we had an explanation yet on how the FO are able to "drain" the sun, which once fired then magically allows the sun to reappear seconds later so they can have another pop 20 minutes later?

Cheers.

The entire format of it was almost identical to A New Hope, almost laughably so but that said, I still loved it.

It was enough to wipe the prequels from my brain completely.

Just finished watching The Force Awakens now and I really liked it. This movie lets many possibilities open for the sequels and I enjoyed most of the new characters, mainly Rey.
