Today's the day. Going to a 7pm screening.

Hoping Carrie Fisher fires up the gold bikini for old times' sake.

I can't be bothered to read back through all the comments, so apologies if I'm repeating what others have already said.

Thought the film was good, felt much more like an original Star Wars as opposed to a prequel. I'd already read that it resembled A New Hope and in many ways I think that was apparent, but it wasn't detrimental to my enjoyment of the film.

A few small criticisms towards the end of the film:

1. It seemed far too easy for Han, Finn and Chewie to just walk in, shut down the shield and then leave again. Where were all the guards?!

2. Finn (a regular guy) against a Skywalker (strong in the force with dark side training) in a lightsaber duel, and Finn manages to hold his own? I call bull shit.

3. Seemed a little too convenient for R2 to just have all the missing information at the end.

But like I said, overall I really enjoyed it and I'm excited for episode viii already.

As for #2 it appears stormtroopers receive combat training as we saw the stormtrooper fighting against Finn when he was using the lightsaber. Add to the fact Ren had been shot by the crossbow, every other time it was blowing stuff up and blasting people away, so if anything for Ren to be standing and to still be dangerous was all the more impressive.

I guess so. We also don't actually know how much training Kylo Ren has had. Anakin would have shat on him mind.

The guess on training would be he would have received some while in Luke'e academy, however I doubt he's had much saber combat training since in terms of improving himself he would have just become smoother doing what he knows. Snoke would be more likely to have taught him more force powers imo, the stopping the blaster shot and the interrogation stuff for example.

Ren is meant to be actively struggling between the light and dark side too, as I've said elsewhere I think this contributes to him being a little more erratic and reckless than he should be, hence Snoke stating at the end that it's time to train him fully. I think there's as assumption that because he was partially trained by Luke etc he's somehow as proficient in the force as Anakin, Sidious, Maul etc but it's never stated that he is a master in any way, ROS displayed quite well that when the odds are against Jedi/Sith they don't always come out on top regardless of their relative skill level. Ren was bleeding out, wasn't really troubled by Finn anyway (he dispatched him with reasonable ease), mostly dominated Rey until she refused to enter his tutelage etc then was perhaps a little cocky and got caught off guard for it.

no guards because they don't expect anyone to be there, remember they had to come out of lightspeed inside the atmosphere to get past the sheilds, im guessing that isn't done oftern if ever!

2 has been explained above, a crossbow shot to the gut and still standing!

3 JJ explained was because R2 downloaded the empires archives in A new hope, wasn't explained well but there you go.

Throughout the movie we were being shown just how much damage Chewie's crossbow can do. Han seemed awed by how much destruction it caused so the fact that Ren managed to keep moving after being shot says a lot about how strong he is. I don't think JJ and co wanted us to believe that Rey is more powerful than Ren, but she did manage to beat him when he was severely injured. That's my explanation for it anyway.

On a separate note, Ren is everything Anakin should have been in the prequels. I completely bought his struggle between light and dark.

It's awesome how Kylo beats Rey (Untrained, new to the force), when it cost Anakin an arm and years of training and failure before slaying his first SIth lord. I think this movies gets way too much hate, none of the Star wars were perfect. Movie is good, disney's influence can be feeled and I think they should've used another plot than a 3rd Death Star.

The crossbow shot was a weaksauce cheat designed to allow JJ to rationalize putting something into the movie that should never have been there. If Ren could fight Rey like he did then he could have dealt with a lowly Stormtrooper like it was nothing. Remember, Finn is the guy that was made a mug of by a random Stormtrooper earlier in the movie when he tried to use that Lightsaber 1v1.

As a side note I can't pick fault with Adam Driver's performance, but I'm not a fan of the whole young Severus Snape vibe that the character is giving off.

I think that during his fight with Rey and Finn, Ren has also completely lost his cool and focus which explains why he made some errors in the fight. Add to that the planet was collapsing

I really enjoyed it. Am always happy to suspend belief when it comes to films that have stupid premises to be gin with. Plot holes don't concern me too much.

Loved all the nostalgia bits. Thought Rey was amazing ❤ and am really looking forward to the next two.

Disney fluff to make as much $$$ as possible, yes, but sometimes it's nice to sit back and enjoy the fluff.

Have the Han and boba films been confirmed? I know they're doing films in those years but didn't know content had been confirmed.

Would like to see Sith Lords film(s) about the war and how the rule of 2 started within the Sith.

I think the Han one has, not the Boba. All but confirmed though.

I think that may be too much Star Wars for me. I liked TFA a lot but fuck me, who cares about Bobba Fett?

You'd be surprised how many people he's the favourite character for.

He's like the cult hero of the typical Star Wars nerd.

Be interesting if they tackle him from an origins story though, cos the whole appeal is his mysterious badass thing.

It was entertaining which is the main thing but I'm disappointed overall. Felt like a reboot which didn't make sense given the continuity of being episode 7. Too similar to "A New Hope". Maybe after all the complaints around the prequels it was a case of playing it too safe. I definitely felt there was over-reaction within this film to the complaints around the prequels. Just stuff like people moaning about a lack of "human" characters in the prequels and then people like Finn in this shouting their lines in a hurried fashion for some kind of comedic effect and trying too hard to make sure this film doesn't fall into the same trap.

I liked the idea of having a stormtrooper as a main character though as they did sometimes seem like a bit of a joke in the old trilogy and I think this film handles them a bit better.

Main thing is though I did find it enjoyable and will definitely be watching the future ones.

and an update on that page shows it was a load of rubbish.

I'm glad. I'm really hoping Rey isn't Luke's daughter as that's just a little too predictable.
