I love the optimism FootballMad, but there's a little bit too much for me there.

Its all very well having games in hand, but points on board are more important. Too many times I have counted the 'What if we win all out games in hand' prospect only to come out disappointed as it also means you'll have a flurry of games, tired legs and a hell of a lot of pressure to win those games. Not only a few weeks ago I looked at the Pompey forum and most of them were saying 'Only 3 points behind Rovers with 3 games in hand'. Naturally to all people it looked like it was a matter of time until they overtook us. Now they're 2 points behind with 1 game.

Games in hand are good, but too misleading IMO

I'm not saying that we will win all those matches, but just pointing out the fact that there is a chance of us getting right back up there due to us not playing as many games.

Anyway it's better for us being optimistic rather than thinking our season is over!

Oh very true. Its depressing to look down!

It could be a very interesting play off fight this season, there's so many teams in with a shout!

Looking forward to the playoffs. Will probably be some big teams fighting it out in there!

Nah it'll be more than 70 this year imo. 73 min I think with it being so tight.
You could be right.

Just seen our fixtures list coming up - we've got a lot of the lower ranked teams at home coming up. We're not out of this yet by any means.

It's amazing what 2 wins in 8 can do for your confidence Kenny.
I think it says a lot about this division and the promotion rules that we're still in with a shot having lost 12 games already this season. And staying in touch for so long last season.

I'd say to us down in 12th is how far the play off fight goes to!

So now is the time where teams have to reach their peak.

Yes but I was just explaining what could be, but you know I can see Oxford struggling to win points in this second half of the season because grinding out results is important at this stage and I just don't think your team can do that.
The team we have this season are quite robust and more than capable of grinding out results, as well as playing decent football. Not sure how you come to the conclusion that we won't. Portsmouth and Plymouth seem to be the ones that are struggling to grind out results consistently.

Northampton are certs for the top three. If we win at home to Mansfield tomorrow, then the top three will be seven points clear of fourth, with only Accrington in eighth, and Carlisle in 12th, having a couple of games in hand.

Looking at the number of games played, the other two auto places will be between Oxford, Plymouth, Bristol, Portsmouth, Accrington, and at a push Carlisle. - prediction 1. Northampton. 2. Oxford. 3. Plymouth.

I'm glad someone is confident about our chances.

Tough three games coming up. Orient and Oxford away followed by Wycombe at home. If we are still in a commanding position after that it's party time.

It'd be great if you'd beat Orient and Wycombe (I suppose Oxford too, for your own benefit). I think we're in a reasonable position - several games in hand and just a few points outside the playoffs - but there are some good teams around us.

I'm looking forward to our game against Northampton next month, should be a good game. A fan on our forum reckons there's only 3 'decent' teams in this league, Plymouth, Oxford and Pompey :dk:

In the next 29 days, we will play 9 games (4 consecutive Tuesday games)!

Personally, I think its a bit of a disgrace if Northampton win the league considering their financial position not so long ago.

Good one. Owner borrows 10 millions, takes it for himself and his cronies. Dosnt pay players or staff and saddles the club with debt.

New Owner comes in and the council agree to wipe out the debt they helped to build by giving all the loan before they should of. New owner has to spend 1 million to help clear unpaid tax, salaries and contractors.

Yeah that all really helped us out, were a disgrace. Maybe read up on the situation before you make yourself look more stupid

In my opinion, a club should lose 3 points for every monthly payday that is missed.

I hope we start playing with an exciting style of football or I'll demand our manager be sacked!

As it would not be the 'Carlisle way' to play football if we weren't exciting all the time.

Oh haven't you heard? Winning games is not the priority in football these days, no instead club's now believe that they should be recognised as playing a particular style and that style only.

Look at this article:

I hope this prediction is every bit as successful as the one you made about catching right up with us three months ago.

But thanks for clarifying what you meant. I'd only add that if we win every game left this year and all other 23 teams lose every game left this year then I reckon we might finish at least level on points with Carlisle.

Not quite sure how this would work logistically

Also if Carlisle were deducted infinite billion points for stealing a draw against Oxford, I reckon we would be ahead of you.

Look Tinpot when are you ever going to stop crying over that draw?

We'll see, we'll see.

One thing I'll say though is that it's good to see Mansfield back up there again, got a bit a of a soft spot for you lot so it'd be great to see you make the play offs. Some of your fans on here seemed not long ago to have lost all hope, but to be honest getting into the play offs doesn't look that hard, it's just being consistent enough to stay in them and then to pull away.

I really don't think we're ready for any sort of play off challenge. We're just lacking a couple of x-factor players that would make a difference.

We have got it in us to finish top 7, but our dreadful record of not beating a single top half team, after 13 attempts writes its own story. We just wouldn't have it in us to win a play off.

The thing that's important for Mansfield Town is showing important signs of progression, with hopefully taking another step next season.

My own bottom line is that we can finish in a top 7 position; however, we can't compete the deal just yet.

Mansfield may sneak 6th or 7th but no higher, our position is obviously false given others games in hand.

Irrespective, for us to be even be potential mentioned is a marvellous achievement given how we were last season, pretty remarkable.

As said by others we haven't yet beat a top half side so that's evidence that we aren't really good enough to beat anyone of note.

Plymouth away on Saturday would be a good start...
