Yeah, same here mate. They speak out against issues like Tax Credits and didn't 80 odd Bish's write an open letter stating thet they though the 20,000 refugees Camoron is allwoing in isn't enough?
They did indeed, I understand reservations people have regarding organised religion but I can't knock the help and practical support they offer.

I apologise for the fact that the intelligence we used was wrong. Is he apologising because he knew the intelligence was wrong yet he went ahead regardless? Or is he merely apologising for the intelligence being wrong? It should be the former.
This scumbag and his scumbag mate over in America started an illegal war and like Dave said should be jailed for it.
Bliar will never publicly admit that he knew Saddam had no wmd. This is what sickens me most about him

I don't understand all this house of lords stuff at moment and the pressure they are getting for daring to vote no.

what the hell is the point of the House of Lords at all if it is unable to vote against a commons vote and if it does will lead to a mass load of reduced powers or mass changes.

Either scrap it or put up with it.

As much as I detest the whole abomination that is theHouse of Lords I'm hopeful they will vote against this. If they don't, things are going to kick off.

Do you think the Tories pressed ahead with this because they think it's literally impossible they'll lose the next election? It's all a bit poll tax. Surely they could have predicted there would be no way low and middle income types would accept this?

I think the Tories have dropped a massive bollock here.

Chuffed to bits with this. I was worried they were going to pull it last minute and look a bit better in the eyes of the public. They haven't and it's been pushed back. So now they look even worse.

Would love to see the look on Gideon and Dave's faces tonight!

Ironic that the institution they refuse to reform has brought this down. A strong Labour should exploit this fully.

The cynic in me says its a ploy to make the Lords seem relevant and worth keeping but who knows. At worst the Tories have dropped a bollock but still over 4 years from when it really matters so they can afford to slip up now.

There's been some excellent speeches made in the past week, especially by women.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
Delayed for three years, unfucking lucky.

Shame it wasn't delayed for five so it could be reading it's head at election time.

George Osborne's interview on Sky News was interesting. He looked genuinely pissed off but made no attempts to hide his intention to "address the constitutional issue".

This sort of thing has happened before. The Tories knew that this would be a deeply unpopular policy. I think they knew there would be a massive backlash so they pretend they're going to dump it on us in it's most destructive form and then after the inevitable backlash dilute it to make it look like they're compassionate.

They knew that if they'd gone ahead and outright done it there would be civil unrest .

How the fuck he hasn't gotten more criticism for this spineless, despicable bullshit that he has pulled is beyond me. He, and every Conservative MP should be ashamed, and anyone who genuinely holds the view that the Tories can be trusted, and so should every spineless editor/media figure who has failed to properly call him out on it. They didn't let the Lib Dems any leeway after their broken promise, so why the fuck is this any different?

Politician in going back on previous promise shocker!

This is a disgusting example of it, sure, but we shouldn't be surprised.

It was fucking woeful from him. Got asked three different questions, answered it exactly the same way every time.

I think any attempt to dilute it will be scrutinised down to the finest detail meaning they're going to have a very, very hard time with this. Really think they've shot themselves in the foot.

Still annoyed that every Labour peer abstained from voting to get rid of this completely. Double standards when you abstain and then preach about how abhorrent the cuts would be.

Politically Dave-Vale its much more damaging to the Tories for them to delay it than destroy it which is probably why they didn't go with the lib dem motion.

Like all governments they want to shove the most damaging in their first period of government in the hope we all forget 3-4 years down the line (or everything is rosy then so people don't care).

an outright removal would have led to the tories being able to cry and moan to the press and get sympathy vote of a portion of the public, a delay of a year or two means they will then know it would have to go live at a more dangerous time for them.

I still do not understand the uproar from the commons, firstly why bother with a house of lords if they cannot block a motion they are firmly against and throw it back to the commons and secondly you can hardly most of the time call the commons an 'elected vote' considering most get party whipped into making their choice rather than given a freedom to vote as they choose.

A single unitary authority for urban Dorset
The whole point of The Lords is that it is a cross section of people with various skills and experiences who are collectively able to review the laws the government is proposing, acting as a check / balance, to prevent anything they as a group feel is potentially damaging.

If they aren't allowed to be that check, then we may as well get rid of it. The fact that they've stepped in on an issue that they as a group feel is potentially damaging should be praised by the electorate, and should highlight the reason for having and keeping The Lords.

Will be interesting to see if / how Labour can work this to their gain, they should be able to make hay on the back of this.

Not quite double standards. You can oppose some cuts and not others. The idea that these super rich people vote for these cuts sickens me though. I'm glad a positive result has been achieved though.

I would argue it is. How can he say that it's not okay to take money away from arts funding (which privately is a huge business, if he cares about it so much why doesn't he cough up some of his £650m fortune towards it), but it is absolutely fine to take money from the working poor? He's saying he would prefer children to grow up in poverty than people not be able to access funding to put on a performance of Macbeth at the local theatre. There's no logic at all. He's a fucking moron.

I always thought that he was fairly liberal considering his background and the industry he works in. Apparently not, the man is a clown. Flying in from New York, probably at the expense of the tax payer, to vote for something in a country he no longer resides. Absurd.

Didn't he grow up in London to upper-middle parents? I'm not surprised in the least to be honest. I've never liked the guy, always seemed like a pompous arsehole.

Anyone doubting the HoL's usefulness should watch the debate. No heckling from either sides, no jeering, schoolyard antics, questions are asked and answered well, speakers speak incredibly well.
