Oliver Letwin prefers the white poor because they're good and proper British serfs who know their place. The acceptance of appalling living standards without appearing to fight back gives them higher regard in his books.

This had better not be about Manchester City.
i liked this post but, really, it could have gone either way. it'd be an acceptable like for most posters, but, based on your impressive track record, i really expected better

In a slightly bizarre twist to the narrative you would usually expect, George Osbourne is currently under fire by the right of the Tory party for his proposed pension changes. Tax alterations that would benefit the majority, but would result in those paying 40% income tax or more paying higher tax on their pension pot.

Gideon making a move that irks the right of the Tories but draws praise from the Lib Dems? Who'd have thought? Attempt to appeal across the political septum and be seen as leader-like perhaps? :pond:

I have a final salary pension and I was told yesterday that my accrual rate is increasing. Bastards.

I must congratulate Mr Osborne on reaching a deal with Google to pay £130m in back taxes over a ten year period. That equates to around 3.4% of last year's revenues.

What a result. I wish I had a tax rate of less than 1%.

On the bright side, corporation tax has moved from being a tax on profit to a tax on revenues. Oh wait, no it hasn't.

But they should be paying c 200 million a year in taxes estimated on their admitted 25% profit margins ( dubious). That's even taking into account the legally ambiguous policies of base reduction and profit shifting. You can see why this 130 million pound deal is being treated with suspicion and scorn.

Should be fun this afternoon seeing Gideon squirming after being grilled my MP's in The Commons trying to defend such a low percentage of profits being paid in tax by Google.

How did that go? Or did he just ignore the questions and hide behind the braying of the back benchers?

I will say this, this government are consistent. They're now treating junior doctors the same way they treat teachers; with total disdain. Queue a shortage of teachers and doctors in the coming years, the solution? More privatisation I'm sure.

Has there ever been a Conservative government that doesn't fuck up health and education when they're in power? Genuine question.

There is a teacher shortage already and it's only going to get worse because training places aren't being filled. Unfortunately the Department for Education are still in denial about it, so there's little chance of the problem being addressed.

I'm not 100% convinced that pissing off the professional classes is a great move on the government's part. But yes, this demoralisation effort is only the beginning of the privatisation process as you say.

Labour really need to take advantage of it now though. Heidi Alexander did a good job this afternoon.

Nor is it particularly good long term policy to piss off the young but they seem to do that all the time. I know the general wisdom is that people will drift right as they get older if you look at the polling of young people's voting habits then the gap between Labour and Conservative is much wider than it used to be (as is the gap between older people voting Conservative versus older people voting Labour).
