Nor is it particularly good long term policy to piss off the young but they seem to do that all the time. I know the general wisdom is that people will drift right as they get older if you look at the polling of young people's voting habits then the gap between Labour and Conservative is much wider than it used to be (as is the gap between older people voting Conservative versus older people voting Labour).
A common view amongst my age group is 'what have politicians ever done for me?' because we've never grown up with politicians who particularly care about the youth. To be fair to Blair's Labour there were some attempts made and it did seem that more schools, hospitals, community projects were planned and built etc. compared to now. But I'd still say that since 18-24 year olds have been conscious of politics (from maybe 2005-2013 for age group as a whole?) it's largely been a load of shite. Clegg etc. fucked us over, and the Cons are continuing and expanding that trend.
Interesting what you say about the polling. Its hard to tell if the 'left leaning tendencies' growing larger amongst the young is because of youthful idealism (as Bernie Sanders put it yesterday/today), or because the right and the centre have let us down. Hard to establish a cause and effect.
Catch 22 really. Youngsters don't vote in their droves like seniors do etc. so politicians don't prioritise them. But at the same time, will they ever vote if politicians keep ignoring them?
