Pretty decent effort from us so far. Steve smith is basically the difference, if we had jimmy in, both bowling attacks are very good, and both batting teams are very average other than steve smith, the man is a batting genius, the best we have all ever witnessed.

Tendulkar for me but Smith is class, the fact his movement and technique is all over the place makes it even more remarkable.

Holding in there as Blade says - maybe get into the last hour and they will start to panic .

Yeah, if we still have wickets in hand going into the final hour the crowd will come in to play a bit like they did at Headingly. That’s still a long, long way away yet though.

I’ve said this time and time again, why do they not check to see where the ball is pitching first when reviewing? We just wasted 2 minutes seeing if the ball hit the bat when it’s outside off stump anyway.

Making a much better fight of this than I expected, will be terrific if we can just hang on and take it to a final game shoot out.

Surely Leach isn't going to deny the Aussies again!?

Be great if we hold on for the draw and then win at the Oval.

The reaction of the Aussies would be interesting to say the least...

EDIT: Sadly not.

Part time spin does for Leach.

At least the fight was there today, good effort against a quality bowling attack on that pitch. I know theyve retained it but it's a huge game still at the oval, a 2-2 draw would be a good series for us. Fair play to Overton great effort from him.

unchanged for the final match. You couldn't make this up.

Ugh.. that is almost more disappointing than yesterday's loss somehow!

It's the perfect opportunity to give the likes of Pope and Sibley their first go. Seriously hope those in charge have the cojones to start afresh after this series. They've increasingly shown fight but also a dearth of test match quality..

Root surely can't stay as captain, he's reactive and it's negatively affecting his batting - but who would replace him? I've seen a lot of mentions of Buttler but.. really?

Only option to replace root is stokes. Roots captaincy isnt the problem though. I fully agree with sticking with the same side, it's a very big test match, we really do not want to lose to them. All the players have now shown glimpses of what they can do so hopefully in the next couple of years we can improve and roy looked better at 4 than opening so stick with it. Steve smith is the difference, if we had jimmy who knows.

Choosing a captain from any of the current set up is tricky. They're all in the side on merit (apart from a couple who are there because of their name/who they play for) as specialist bowlers, batsmen, all-rounders etc - why not call up a specialist captain? I'm sure there's someone in the county game who could fit the bill?

I'll admit to not knowing enough about other counties players in depth to know who that might be, but it's a potential option. Better than putting that anchor round the neck of one of our best players.

captain role has been a poison chalice for the likes of crowd favourites botham and flintoff in the past...
stokes would not be the same with the added pressure
could owen morgan be enticed back?

Boycott and Strauss knighted, what the fuck is going on, I mean andrew strauss is on a par with how pathetic Andy Murray's was, sympathetic due to his wife unfortunately I feel that has come from. As for boycott, the mans a complete cock, he claims to be some big yorkshireman and supports man utd, wanker.

Wasn’t it Boycott who admitted that he’d rather score 100 and lose the game than score less himself but his team win?

Every chance. Very good record to be fair but no need to be knighted at all. As for strauss well, may as well give kp one too, jimmy Anderson and stuart broad are more worthy, I mean Joe root has nearly scored as many runs already. JOKE

Strauss was instrumental in our transformation in the limited overs game, as well as being a successful captain and pretty good opening batsman.

Jimmy and Broad will get one too when they retire anyway.

T.May just chosen her mates it seems and not just cricket ones !

Great player and credit to cricket. It hasn't Boycott got a conviction?

Thought people couldn't get an honour if they had one ..

They shouldn't be giving knighthoods out as easy as that, no fucking chance. Hes got it because of the unfortunate circumstances with his wife, simple as that. And boycott has his because hes Theresa May's hero.

But they do, and have. Since his tenure behind the scenes England have reached a World T20 final and won the World Cup, hes spearheaded cricket being on the big map nationwide again. He retained the Ashes in Australia during his captaincy also...

Its MBE-esque, but as we both agree, the requirements for knighthood are not sky high.

This is not a great Australian side, Smith and a couple of the bowlers apart, but we are so out of our depth it's embarrassing. I believe Root has proved he's not captain material.

Standard this series. Get the Aussies 2 down for very little, then Smith comes in and they motor onwards.

Nothing we can do about that. For all our faults and there are plenty, steve smith being the best batsmen in the world isnt down to bad bowling from us, hes just too good unfortunately.

Completely agree, he's a different level. Does seem like we rip out the first two remarkably easily each time though before Smith comes and does his thing - seems like he bats for an entire innings at a time! Curran at least appears to be giving him a bit of trouble today from the limited amount of the game I watched before lunch.
