Can't believe he's not scored more in his career, he seems like a natural predator. He wins high balls and gets his headers on target (2 of his goals have been headed in crosses). He can score from outside the box (as he did for one today). He can take it on the volley from crosses (as he did against Chesterfield) and he gets to any loose balls in the box before anyone else (as he did today and also against Mansfield).
Remember he's dropped a level. I know Chesterfield are league 1 but when we signed him I did think he'd be absolutely class at league 2 level, he always struck me as a good league 1 striker down the years that we were league 1. We're lucky to have him.

I'm not exaggerating when I say the 3rd and 4th were gifts, they really were. We absolutely need to cut this out if we're going to do anything this season.

Yep.

1st goal was probably the least gifted of the lot. Corr unmarked in the middle of the area, but still schoolboy to give him so much space.
2nd goal was just a comedy of errors where we missed several opportunities to hoof it clear and eventually it went in.
3rd... I've seen teams given free goals after someone scored an unsporting goal, that were less of a gift. Basically Luke Joyce was dispossessed on the edge of the area with nobody else around him.
4th might not show the build up in the highlights, and will looks like a good goal for Cambridge, but we managed to concede from our own throw-in after the ball was thrown into a part of the pitch with only Cambridge players to pick it up.

True, but the impression we were given was that scoring goals just wasn't part of his all round play.

Funny thing is there were only 12 shots on target in the whole game, so only 4 shots were saved. 2 of those were very good saves, one for each keeper and the other two came during the goalmouth scramble seconds before Cambridge's second goal.

Thought Wyke had a good game too, deserved his goal. I like the look of McQueen too, played well on Tuesday and when he came on today.

We're only on 2pts so far, but the football being played is much, much better than last season and we're yet to be defeated.

I think Cambridge will be up there this season, and I reckon (hope) we'll be midtable at least. If we can eradicate these defensive errors from our game, we'd be a very good side in my opinion.

At 5pm I was gutted but now I think it's a good point. It sounds like Carlisle certainly deserved their point and I'm sure you will take plenty more points off the top teams at home this season.

It would be easy to be negative at conceding 4 goals but at such an early stage of the season with teams still learning how to play with their new team mates, as well as new systems, these things can happen.

I did say at the start of the season I would take 7 points from the first 3 games so hopefully we can go to Wimbledon and get the win.

I knew there would be a massive glut of goals today...............i do not know why other Carlisle fans didn't expect the same.

We at home have decided to play one of the most Over the top, manic, dangerously risky mass-attack based formation that i think i have ever seen from any club in my time watching lower league football.

its not 5-3-2 as we call it, nor is it 3-5-2 as some would call it.............at home we play 3-1-2-4 and and 2 supposed 'wing-backs' play around the opposition box. We seem to play a tactic of having 4 players in the opposition box, and try to get 6-8 players up and about the box when on an attack at the risk of leaving enormous gaps in our own half.

I am not complaining about us trying this approach...........after afew horrendously boring years its going to be alot of fun these first few months, but it is certainly one of the most high-risk tactics i've seen a club attempt and it'll lead to some interesting home games coming up.

Going off the first pages of this thread i think Cambridge fans are expecting a strong at back and take game approach, but they won't really see a side like us rest of this season shoving 6-8 players endlessly around their box all while attempting calamity mad-cap suicide defending at the other end of the pitch.

Cambridge capitalised well on it early on with 2 goals taken well from lots of big glaring gaps, bad ideas at wrong moments and lack of clearances but i kept saying to my dad through game i expect 2-3 goals a game at home from our side as the numbers game will just get goals in the end, but must admit i didn't expect 2 goals in a minute but us scoring was a massive turn in game as it released alot of pressure whacked on the team from another 'here we go again' atmosphere in the crowd.

at 2-2 we gifted cambridge the lead with a terrible individual mistake, again our total lack of covering players meant every mistake is costly and sadly we were making numerous mistakes.

2nd half we seemed to score from nothing, a good finish but seemed to come out of the blue with little build-up before again an individual mess-up cost us the 4th goal. We still pressed and pressed until 4-4 and then could have swung either way but as said was sure Cambridge nicked it but for a great save.

we really deserved the 3 points, but a lack of concentration, too much messing about in wrong areas and bad decision making cost us......but it was certainly alot of fun watching it all play-out.

I hope this mad-cap experiment works as we'll enjoy the season then, but this mass attack formation won't last until October if the defending doesn't improve.....need another centre back the current ones cannot cope, plus we need to be direct at the back and THEN pass it in their half......end of the day if you have 4 players in your half and 6 players in the other half you play the ball quickly to the area with more options and then play it about, not try numerous tippy-taps when there is 3 of your players and 4 of theirs to grab the ball.

God that 3rd goal looks even worse on TV. I hadn't realised at the time that he'd actually fell over the ball.

Have to cut this sort of thing out.

There was one at the other end as well when it was 0-2. You won that scramble as well.

Perhaps you can work on your scrambling in training ....
In future, for scrambles in front of the opposition goal, Jabo will be under instructions to kick everything that moves into the back of the net... defenders go in, the ball goes in, his teammates go in, the referee goes in... no space for uncertainty.

Surely someone should have the responsibility of doing a Clive Dunn impression and shout " Don't panic , don't panic " .. common sense to me , but what do I know ?

Not many on our forum rate Raynes, but I thought he played reasonably well again today. He's obviously not the fastest player you'll ever see but he's a big, dominating defender.

Grainger is a bit sloppy at times, looks uncomfortable when he has possession but can pick out some decent long range passes.

I thought Thompson was poor in the first half, but he played alright in the 2nd half. McQueen looked bright when he came on, as did Osei to a lesser extent.

Most fans were baffled that Hery was subbed off, as he was one of our better players. Balanta was quiet when he replaced him, but he looked comfortable on the ball.

I liked Wyke and Ibehre up front together, but I think Curle will take a different approach against Plymouth.

He was caught out a bit for their first goal today but other than that he did well. He was great the other night against Chesterfield and was steady at Mansfield last week.

What I don't get about our fans is I keep hearing that he's not comfortable on the ball. To me he looks decent on the ball and has good distribution for a centre back. It's as if our fans have decided already that he's another O'Hanlon and no matter what he does with the ball, he'll always "look dodgy" in their eyes.

It's good to see us trying to knock the ball about on the floor but the constant one twos across the back three was pissing me off.

He's not peaking too early .......... so it was inspired for Curle to chase away a goal a game striker ? I look forward to the positive Curle threads as the season progresses

No because he is absolutely shite. Total waste of a wage. You'll soon realise this once defenders stop solely focusing on Bingham and actually start marking your other players.

But he isn't a goal a game striker. He's scored 3 league goals in the last 2 years. Fucking dreadful. Jabo scored that amount in half an hour yesterday.

Bit worried about Roberts for us, he's looked the weakest of the defence so far, absolutely no pace at all, which would be fine, but he's not doing the other things needed to counter that, getting caught out far too often.

Would like to see us try 4 at the back, Keane, Morrissey and Berry in the middle with Slew and Newton as wide forwards behind Corr (who is absolute quality, haven't seen a striker at United with the all round game like he seems to have since Kitson).

Needless to say yesterday was very entertaining, more entertaining in August than a game like that would be in April anyway.

It's funny you say that because Radio Cambs said the only U's defender that came out of yesterday's game was Roberts. Not saying you're comments are wrong but interesting that Johnno and Doug thought differently.

I would not judge your defence too much on yesterday as we'll caught you out completely with our style.

we're currently at home playing one of the most attack based, high risk tactics i've seen, we played 4 men in or on your box the entire game and shoved 6-7 men in about the box every time we could leave just 2 players in our own half.

teams just do not usually take such massive gambles and it'll catch afew sides out early on it is not at all easy to defend against.

Carlisle will have to of course adjust defence wise once November comes and teams know what to expect and how to cope
