So we've lost a right back and replaced him with a centre back.

Makes sense.

Rooney really wants to play the WC 2018. He even said that he wants to retire as World Cup Winner. What's that supposed to mean? He can't play forever to make good on a promise /s :D

He won't be allowed to change nationality this far into his career?

Lots of talk down here that the ridiculously in-form Harry Arter might switch to England if the chance arose, which is now being picked up by national media. Despite making a few friendly appearances for Ireland, he hasn't actually played a competitive game for them due to always being injured.

http://www.independent.ie/sport/soc...-as-online-reports-gather-steam-35111680.html

Which raises the fundamental point as to why I don't want him playing for England or Ireland, because his body can't take 30 odd games a season as it is, given his style of play. It was the same back in League One, never mind at this level.

Don't worry, while he's at Bournemouth he'll constantly be overlooked regardless of his form for a name who might be playing shit or possibly not at all.

Is that why Wilshere's not in the squad then?

I think it's a disgrace that Rooney should be starting in central midfield to be honest. What sort of message does that send out to the rest of the central midfielders in the country? What has this clown done in that position - or any midfield position of late - to warrant being ahead of them? There's no way you can tell me that he's a better central midfielder than Britton, Noble, Barkley or even an unfit, un-sharp Jack Wilshere. In fact I would happily have any of the CMs from the U21s in there ahead of him too. This commitment to Rooney in England is bizarre. The question shouldn't be where he plays or even if he starts, but whether he deserves to be in the squad at all, because I'm not sure you can argue him being among the top two in the country in any position on the field.

He's the last thing England have that's close to a superstar name and the FA will want to put his name out there to please/attract sponsors. Even at the expense of performances and results.
Danny Drinkwater wins the league, Noble statistically one of Englands best midfielders, Wilshere gets in the side when he's barely kicked a ball yet now he's currently starting games and proving fitness doesn't get a look in because we have to find a way to get Rooney into the squad. There's way too many fossils spouting nonsense about his quality/ability now too like Hoddle and co.
In many ways this reminds me of Lothar Matthaus's pitiful end to his Germany career. Once an absolute machine of a player he was still picked well past his prime because Germany were lacking in big names and looked absolutely awful in Euro 2000 in a sweeper role after playing as a central mid his entire career.
Mind you, he broke the German caps record by being called up when he was shit. Maybe that's the goal with Rooney and England.

The BBC's Iain Dennis defended Rooney by saying he has a superb pass completion rate while playing in a midfield position for England. Well yeah, that's because he's PASSING IT 10 YARDS EITHER SIDE OF HIM for 90 minutes ffs.

My main issue is that we should be building towards the future.

It is debatable at best whether he should be in the starting eleven. With how quickly he seems to be regressing in the past few years, where will he be in two years time when the next tournament comes around? I doubt he'll be any better than he is now.

Thankfully in the last 1-2 years we have got rid of most of the older failing players, and we had the youngest team at the Euros, but Rooney seems to be the last of the previous generation who is still hanging around..

He is shit for United. He is shit for England. He is shit up front. He is shit in midfield. He's played 50-odd games every year since he was 16 years old. He doesn't (or perhaps can't) take care of himself like Ronaldo. England owe him nothing. Bobby Charlton is our second highest scorer but that's no reason to pick him. He is burnt out.

For god's sake Southgate, if you do anything in your short spell in charge at least make it easy for the next manager. DROP HIM!!!

Thank you for reading.

And we all know if you sleep with grandmothers they steal some of your life force causing you enter into an earlier than usual physical decline.

This is known as being "eighty-sixed".

Went to the game yesterday so i had a good look at Rooney and i have to say he should never play as a number 6 ever again, all he did was stood around the same spot receiving the ball and passing the ball mainly sideways, (anybody could have done that) he was far too static, slow and predictable and when ever he made an ambitious through pass his quality was poor.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.

With Beckham they reduced it to two minute cameos to drag him over that line. Perhaps that's where Rooney's future lies with England.

He's never been a six or an eight, or he's never been a good one, at least. The big problem is that now he's a shit nine and ten as well.

I've absolutely no doubt that this lad will be Englands number 1 within the next few years. On another level to anything I've seen at Deepdale.

There's a really funny article on BBC about Rooney being booed. Henderson and Stones have a gun to their head, and are telling everyone how wonderful Wayne is.

I was away so didn't see the game - was Rooney booed as he was subbed or just at the end of the game/

As I say didn't see it but 2-0 is hardly the most convincing score - would hope for more goals but then that probably isn't just down to Rooney.

His most telling contribution so far was chucking it in and costing Sunderland 2 points.

Agree with the points about Rooney though, it's what I've been saying for a while, his diet of booze, fags and carry outs was always going to start telling. Wilshere will be next.

When he retires, he'll completely balloon, in a way that will make Sam Allardyce look thin.

Not many numbers available for fat thin haired Wayne then?(I can't believe he's only 30, he looks way older.)
Maybe #1? :bg:

That's the sort of comment fans who only watch match of the day make. His performances for Preston were impressive and he's made a good start to his prem career, definitely got all the attributes required to be a top keeper.

He's been called up because he was already with the U21s and 3rd choice keeper will not get a sniff. Not much more to read into it.

I never claimed to have seen him for Preston (I haven't), but did see him chucking one in and costing Sunderland two points.

I'm really not sure his start has been all that good at all, to be honest.

You clearly didn't watch the Spurs game were he stopped Sunderland getting an absolute pasting, it's easier to say he's not all that because he made one mistake though i suppose.

The lad is top class, he was unbelievable for us, you only have to look at how many clean sheets we kept while he was with us to after he left. Have a look at the goal he set up for Redmond for the U21's aswell, his distribution is quality.

I'm reading about Henderson being the next captain. It's funny not just how bad we are, but how we manage to make worse decisions than the previous bad ones.

Plus Butland's injured.

Pickford's got a few years yet.

Hendo's boss, a proper player as captain now - you may have half a chance. Rooney is finished both for England and Man Utd.
