Started Series 2 of the Strain after a disappointing season 1 ending, and I have to say I think it's started pretty well again. Only downside is the child actor who plays Eph's son has been replaced, and as a result is now a totally unlikeable bastard. If you're going to change an actor for whatever reason - fine, but don't give the character a total bloody personality change.

Like the look of this from the writer/director of Absentia and Oculus. Basically about a kid whose dreams and nightmares become real.

Also, don't get too excited but Shyamalan does PG-13 found footage....

Watched The Lair of the White Worm (1988) last night and bloody well enjoyed it. Bit cheesy but recommended if you're a fan of The Strain.

Anyway, Watcher In the Woods... I remember watching it years ago when I was off school ill. Really enjoyed it, for a PG it was actually pretty creepy. Recommended.

Watched a film tonight called Final Girl. Only because while looking for something to watch, she read out the synopsis, and I pointed out to her that 'it sounds like Carrie but a bit rapey.' Probably more thriller than horror, but it was alright. Full of plotholes, but some good moments. Entertaining enough anyway!

Clown is a weird film. Wasn't too bad though. 6.5/10 seems fair.

Not the worst remake I've seen by a long shot. 6/10

The Pyramid (2014)
Started off great and I couldn't understand why it was slated so badly, then Anubis was revealed and I could see why. Still, I bloody enjoyed it. 8/10

Preservation (2014)
Eden Lake type dealy, only not as good. 4/10

The Pyramid was terrible I thought. The effects were hilarious. I'd probably watch it again though.

Watched Eden Lake too last night. Think it's brilliant, Jack O'Connell is a brilliant actor. 8/10.

On that note, what are folks thoughts on found footage horror? it does seem to be flooding the genre at the moment, but for the most part I'm quite fond of it.

I don't really watch any new ones, of which I know there are a lot, so I don't doubt it has become its own dismal sort of a cliche. But I think it can be very interesting when done well, potentially at least. A foregrounding of cinema as physical object (or digital one, now I guess, maybe textual is a better word?). Cf. comments in the animation thread - a formally adventurous idea/device that would be deemed BBC 4 if you're really fucking lucky if some beardy London Filmmakers' Co-op bod did it, but is obviously accepted by mass audiences in this context. I like that. Horror cinema remains a lumpen, nakedly commercial avant garde, as it should.

Cloverfield has some short comings as a film but I think it's quite brilliant in that respect. A "digital palimpsest" David Bordwell called it. And lest we forget Cannibal Holocaust was a found footage wheeze. Is that the earliest one? It'd be an interesting wee tributary to trace. But I'm too busy wanking into my own mouth tracking down proto POV-cams (Latest = intro to L'Assassin habite au 21).

Backcountry (2014).
City boy takes his missus camping, tries to go all alpha male and takes a wrong turn winding up in a black bear's territory. 6/10

Into the Grizzly Maze (2015).
All star cast including James Marsden, Thomas Jane, Scott Glenn and Billy Bob Thornton take on massive rogue grizzly bear in Alaska. Most of the budget obviously went on the cast considering some of the awful CGI on show. 5/10

Currently watching Lucio Fulci's City of the Living Dead.

Like the look of Bone Tomahawk. Set in the wild west if follows a posse on the trail of a cannibalistic gang who have made off with some of their townsfolk.

Trailer doesn't look great but it has the potential to be a good horror.

Saw a writeup for a film only getting a dvd release over here called the Final Girls. Has lots of nods to the classic 80s stuff and looks quite good.

Watched Sisters last night, very low budget Brian De Palma with Margot Kidder about siamese twins. More thriller than horror, but well worth a watch.

Sisters has shown on THC on more than one occasion. I enjoyed it IIRC.

Just looked The Final Girls up, will definitely keep an eye out for that, looks a lot of fun.
